@Em
All of what you wrote is on half a page!
I Presume it is in normal print type with no colour.
I would like the PDF.
@ northernstar
Yes, it is a 1/2 page for the newspaper’s size. It measures — width 10.25 inches, height 7.5 inches. It’s done with the double column format just like the graphic version of the fact sheet. It’s all standard print sizes so it should be easy to read and the newspaper will be doing it in two colours (black and red type), so they said. I’ll e-mail the PDF to calgary411 but it is quite a large file – 8.7 MB – so I’ll ask her first if she can accept that size. (It’s a 300ppi PDF version of my original photoshop file.) Stay tuned.
Send it and we’ll see, Em. I have “shaw”.
I’d be interested in doing that too (for Calgary’s FastForward, FFWD) but can’t afford it right now. They don’t give prices; their requirements look daunting (to me): http://www.ffwdweekly.com/public_files/ffwd_ad_specs.pdf.
@Em
This is a bi weekly small town paper I would put in. I think I will get the specs for what I can do and the cost from the local paper’s office. Circulation is just over 10k. I bet there would be more notice in Toronto and the other big cities. I am willing to contribute money to get to the bigger market.
The PDF is on its way to calgary411. (Fingers crossed because it was over my attachment limit.) Sorry it’s such a big file but that was necessary to get the best quality possible for the newspaper. (Or so my husband said.) I’ve never done anything like this before so it’s a learning experience for me.
I got it OK and I’m sending on to northernstar. It looks like the file may be too large to be accepted here. When I tried to open the link I created, only part of the document appeared. Let me know if you get the document by email, northernstar. It looks like it went OK from my email, so now it is a matter of the size that your email will accept.
You are faster than a speeding bullet (aimed at our FATCA target). Thanks calgary411!
northernstar sent me an email saying that she got the file (Em’s 1/2 page ad) OK, so she can work on getting it to her newspaper, perhaps next week now.
I can read it on my my tablet. I don’ Think it downloaded yet. Will try tomorrow on my laptop.
@ calgary411
I opened the PDF link you posted last night and it downloaded okay but I think you are right to remove it because it is a byte hog. If northernstar gets it intact that will be good enough. I’ll send you a reduced version (down to 180ppi, <4 MB). It seems to print out fine (in landscape mode – i.e. page turned sideways) but it's probably not up to newspaper requirements. I can hardly wait to see the ad next week. Of course I won't have any idea what effect it will have but hopefully it will get some people thinking … nothing ventured, nothing gained, they say.
Em,
Your pdf file is completely removed from Isaac Brock. If anyone else wants it, I can easily forward by email to them as I did to northernstar, which seemed to work OK.
I’ll bet your ad starts some conversation in your community and surrounding area! Thanks so much for initiating and carrying through!
My FATCA warning ad came out in our local newspaper today (plus an affiliated newspaper in a nearby province). Aside from the fact that the red colour I submitted turned out looking a bit more orange than red it is quite readable and well placed on page 5. I now feel people here are warned. It’s up to them to do something if they want to. I’ll watch the op-eds for some feedback but I seriously doubt there will be any there. I can only hope that a whole lot of thinking goes on in the minds of “U.S. persons” in these parts and that some will take a peek at the websites I listed.
@Em
What is your readership of your newspaper?. I am holding off doing my local paper.
main reason is my BF is not too happy with me talking FATCA. I want a place to live for a little while ,especially since it is cold, cold winter up here.
I did put the same FATCA warning on Democratic Underground. There were 31 replies…(a lot of me replying and adding more links. 5 recs (including me.) but over 718 views. and 3 accidentals duels replied.
There are a lot of viewers on DU It was an experiment. I put it in the Canada Forum and also the General Discussion. It was interesting the replies. Many typical of the we Americans abroad are tax evaders and rich. I am satisfied that I tried to spread the word.
@Em
I got the pdf intact with the help of my computer doctor son. It is saved . I put copied yours in a word form to put it on DU…no side warning. I hope there will be some responses to your ad.
@All
Interesting article that FB Say No to FATCA just p ut up…
http://www.abqjournal.com/313290/opinion/overreaching-tax-law-undermines-us-trust.html
From the Right Wing Albuquerque Journal
Excerpt: Last month, a group of Canadians issued a letter seeking the repeal of FATCA. And there are efforts to repeal the sweeping tax law in the U.S., among them a bill introduced by Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., who has said, “FATCA is a textbook example of a bad law that doesn’t achieve its stated purpose but does manage to unleash a host of unanticipated destructive consequences.”
Paul is right on this one. Americans shouldn’t have to give up their citizenship, and foreigners, foreign financial institutions and governments shouldn’t have to kowtow to the U.S. government, which has no problem spying on its own citizens’ emails and phone calls, much less snooping on foreign bank accounts.”
It is agreeing with us and probably referring to us here at Brock.. I know if I put it on DU…I would be attacked big time.
Oh well, sometimes I can be on the side with people I usually don’t agree with . 🙂
@ northernstar
I don’t know what the actual readership is (I’ll have to ask our neighbour, one of the owners) but it is distributed amongst a population of about 10,000 total (my best guess). Pretty much everyone we know picks up a copy each week because that’s where we get our local news. Glad you got that PDF (it is a rather large file). That was a good discussion you got going on the Democratic Underground forum. Thanks for leading me to it. I think you spread the word quite nicely with that (over 700 views). Anyway, you got me thinking back to a blog I used to read, called Baghdad Burning: “I’ll meet you ’round the bend my friend, where hearts can heal and souls can mend.” The girl who wrote that blog fled to Syria in 2007 with her family and the blog ended. She did one update in April of this year.

Commented on earlier and refers to letter from these parts: http://isaacbrocksociety.ca/2013/11/12/letter-to-canadian-bankers-association-issued-jointly-by-isaac-brock-society-and-maple-sandbox-in-opposition-to-fatca/comment-page-4/#comment-755237
@Em
I read that Baghdad Burning blog , faithfully. Thanks for posting her april 2013 entry..wow 10 years…
My local paper is about 10k…I will see how yours does.
Like I thought before…We may send out the message to many, who may ignore but some won’t. And it takes one to tell another and that one tells another . The chain gets longer and stronging.
@ calgary411
There’s a JPG in your e-mail box that I put together yesterday. Feel free to post it here in case other Brockers might have a use for it. I’m about to do the rounds of our community bulletin boards with this new 1/4 page message.
Thanks so much. Here is your creation, Em (click to enlarge):
@ calgary411
I hope I fixed that. It opens fine in my e-mail. I think a little extra dot let me down. I’ll check back in after my rounds.
@Em
Good luck
I tried putting up Factca warning sheets . They would be taken down. My library would no post it. That is the reception up here in NE Ontario.
@ northernstar
I haven’t had any problems here except with the ones I put outside the banks (down in no time). Our community bulletin boards are outdoors so that means the messages get bedraggled looking sometimes so then I put fresh ones up. I’m sorry you’ve had that experience in Ontario. What’s with them anyway?
@Em
I don’t know. Ignorance?
