Here is our official press release regarding the upcoming protest in Toronto at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre, November 13 & 14. Thanks to Lynne & Peter!
Wednesday, November 13, 2013 a.m. Update:

Peter and Stephen are on site and have been they would be arrested if they entered building and tried to leave CBA letters — “comments about CBA are inflammatory.”
Inflammatory is: “… the goal of this conference is to teach them how to navigate the compliance ‘hurdles’ in a session called ‘Preparing to Implement the Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act (FATCA)..”

For Immediate Release
TORONTO – U.S. Treasury officials are engaged in a financial attack on millions of law-abiding Canadians and Canada’s banking industry appears ready to help them win.
An open letter sent today to Terry Campbell, President of the Canadian Bankers Association (CBA), urges him and his association to abandon their policy of capitulation to unreasonable U.S. demands and instead defend the rights of Canadians everywhere. The letter is a collaborative effort of Canadians from coast to coast. Most are participants at the Isaac Brock Society and Maple Sandbox websites at which the letter is posted online. Innocente lands the first punch again: the latest “name-and-shame list” has been placed on public inspection for printing in tomorrow’s Federal Register. You can view it here. It is, of course, nearly two weeks past the October 30th deadline for the list to be printed, but perhaps it’s because the list compiler is still getting used to her new role: Ann V. Gaudelli has moved on to bigger and better things, and the naming & shaming is now the responsibility of Dorothy A. Harbison.
The Isaac Brock Society and Maple Sandbox today issued a joint letter to Mr. Terry Campbell, President of the Canadian Banker’s Association, detailing their opposition to FATCA. The letter, which was hand delivered to Mr. Campbell’s office, is reproduced below. As well, you can download the PDF of the letter here.

Terry Campbell,
President,
Canadian Bankers Association
…
Dear Mr. Campbell,
As citizens and residents of Canada, we are strongly opposed to the Canadian Bankers Association’s (CBA) recently-stated advocacy for an intergovernmental agreement (IGA) that would allow the government of the United States – through the Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act – to impose its tax laws in Canada.
Such an agreement would represent a gross violation of Canadian sovereignty and would violate the rights of Canadian citizens and residents under the Charter of Rights and Freedoms, the Canadian Human Rights Act, the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act, and other legal guarantees. The CBA’s claim that an IGA would mitigate these violations in any meaningful way is illusory.
There are an estimated one million people in Canada who have, one way or another, connections to the U.S. that would place them, through FATCA, on the U.S. Internal Revenue Service’s radar screen. Add in family members, who are also caught up in this net, and the one million gets closer to four million – that’s nearly 12% of the Canadian population! Continue reading →
The following is a cross-post from Maple Sandbox, a post by Blaze. WE STRONGLY ENCOURAGE ALL TORONTO-AREA BROCKERS AND SANDBOXERS TO ATTEND THIS DEBATE IF THEY CAN.

The organizers say:
FATCA – The most important issue Canadians are not aware of and Candidates won’t talk about!
Their information provides links to the recent MacLean’s article (What Is FATCA: IRS Peeking Into Canadians’ Accounts article by Erica Alini) and the OpEd News article (FATCA Faces Tell the Real Story) by Lynne Swanson. It incorporates much of the latter article into the blog.

Global Seagulls and the New Reality of Immigration: http://t.co/CW5d8cQ8Dq – 2011 @CAFreeland article suggests shifting def of citizenship

In view of Isaac Brock Society interest in the Toronto Centre by-election, the invitation to certain Toronto Centre candidates to align themselves with the anti-FATCA movement at the protest, I post this 2011 article by Liberal Candidate Chrystia Freeland.
Who is Chrystia Freeland?
According to a Government of Canada site -as of April 25, 2013:
Chrystia Freeland was born in Peace River, Alberta, in 1968, and attended the United World College of the Adriatic before studying at Harvard University, from which she received a B.A. in History and Literature. She was awarded a Rhodes Scholarship to continue her studies at St. Anthony’s College, Oxford University, where she earned a Master’s degree.
Freeland began her career in journalism as a stringer in the Ukraine writing for the Financial Times,The Washington Post and The Economist. She then worked for the Financial Times in London as its deputy editor, editor of its weekend edition, editor of FT.com, UK news editor, Moscow bureau chief and Eastern Europe correspondent.
“Mark Twain” has provided information for the interesting material in this post.
Starts with:
Roger Villere: As Chairman of LAGOP I agree we need to introduce a RNC resolution during our winter meeting to address this ! I will be looking to make this resolution on behalf of the 7.5 million Americans living overseas.

Washington, D.C. (November 6, 2013)A bipartisan bill has been introduced in the Senate with the goal of simplifying income tax collections for taxpayers who work abroad.
Senators Sherrod Brown, D-Ohio, and John Thune, R-S.D., led a bipartisan group of senators Tuesday to introduce the Mobile Workforce Abroad Income Tax Simplification Act, legislation that would simplify and standardize expat income tax collection for employees who live outside of the US.

Fast-food lesson: Voting should be by residency, not citizenship http://t.co/RBEdqFNHdt – Taxation should be by residence, not citizenship
— U.S. Citizen Abroad (@USCitizenAbroad) November 7, 2013
A very interesting article referenced in the above tweet. The comments are even more interesting. This article suggests a trend toward placing greater significance on residence than citizenship. Those opposed to U.S. citizenship-based taxation (everybody) may want to research U.S. jurisdictions where non-citizens are entitled to vote. Voting (deciding how a community is to be governed) and taxation (paying for the community) are part of the same issue.
