Our own Ladybug sent me the following 1980 document from the US Consulate in Calgary.  It has this don’t-die-of-laughing-they-really-did-say-it line:  ” … a person who has already lost U.S. citizenship by that date [Oct. 10, 1978] may not have it restored.”  Oh that the rules were what they were.  Now, no matter whether you lost it back then or not, you have it whether you want it or not.  One line, however, is still all too true:  “Did you know … That U.S. laws, regulations and procedures are always changing, and what was true some years ago may not be true now?”

A reader sent me the following e-mail and eventually gave me the permission to publish it earlier this week.  The IRS is hammering Canadian residents who they deem to be US persons.  All Canadians should be aware of the hazard–that if we allow the IRS to shake down our people who happened to be “United States persons” it makes all the rest of us poorer because (1) it decreases our taxable base; (2) it reduces the total investment in the Canadian economy (destroying jobs); (3) it will increase the total tax burden on workers who have to pay the Old Age security for people impoverished by United States taxation of Canadians; (4) it is a very real threat to Canadian sovereignty because it is the exaction of tribute from Canadian taxpayers.  We should all be very alarmed about United States extraterritorial taxation!  We must put pressure on our politicians to nip this in the bud. In early February, Late Loyalist told his 2011 OVDI story, a harrowing tale: his 5% voluntary disclosure fine was $1589.00, with zero taxes owing to the United States, but his lawyer fees exceeded 20k.  He now reports that he has renounced his United States citizenship.

Wednesday March 7th at 3:45 pm Calgary time I renounced my US citizenship. What a relief! I can’t tell you how good that first step feels.

Hi everyone.

A number of people have written to the Isaac Brock Forum saying that they can’t get onto the forum.  Now I want to mention that I am absolutely ambivalent as to whether this forum even exists.  It was created out of a desire to serve people in a different format than what this WordPress blog.  That’s ok with me, but as adminstrator of this blog I definitely have my hands full, and therefore, I retreated from involvement there.

Now the person who kindly set up the forum has not accepted to be its on-going administrator.  So I wonder if someone that we know here would be willing to do it. This announcement has been up at the forum itself but no one has come forward.
