As announced on another thread, there was a public meeting organized by Paul Dewar MP (NDP, Ottawa-Centre) to discuss FBAR and FATCA on the evening of March 26.  I attended that meeting, along with at least two other Brockers (Deckard and Pacifica).

I am attaching in PDF format my two-page summary and impressions of the meeting.  I delayed posting this until Deckard and Pacifica both had a chance to look at a draft and give me some comments on it.  However this is my summary, from my own notes and memory, and they certainly are free to exapnd on or disagree with anything in it.

As many of you may have gathered by now, I’m not a Tory, I’m a “Dipper” (NDP supporter) from way back.  But I am beginning to like Jim Flaherty.  Certainly more than any other Tory in recent memory (with the exception of Jim Prentice, for whom I also have great respect, after his stance for the free vote on gay civil marriage in Canada a couple of years ago).

In today’s mail (remember Canada Post?) I got a three-and-a-half page reply from Flaherty to three emails I’d sent last month.  Actually not “snail” mail, it arrived the day after it was dated (but then, I live in Ottawa).  It may be a new standard reply now, and others may have received one recently, but there’s a passage in it that I haven’t heard before, on FATCA, which I’d like to pass on, with pride and hope.

About four weeks ago, I sent an email to Canadian Bankers Association (CBA) on Blaze’s behalf, forwarding to them under my real name an email she had written (from which I had stripped her personal identification). Blaze posted their reply to my email (which reply was really a reply to Blaze’s email) in this thread.

After receiving CBA’s reply to Blaze, I sent a lengthy reply to them. Earlier today, I received a short reply to that missive, from the same CBA official. This latest reply seems more sympathetic to our concerns, in tone and wording.
