defeating the conservative is not sufficient, a court decision invalidating the IGA is required,
I remember the liberal promise not to impose wage and price controls back during an election in the 1970’s
and many may remember to promise to scrap the GST. A court victory will require the next government to invoke a charter override to impose a new IGA.
@Patricia
I agree. Just doing what I can to make good on my promise to CON MPs after they agreed to the IGA; told them we are one million plus our families and friends and that we would remember being bypassed/sold out when it comes to election day.
Bottom line no matter what is that this message NEEDS to get out despite the Canadian media being MUTED deliberately by their partially AMERICAN controlled and traded owners!
Hopefully, before the next federal election more and more Canadians (including young Canadians, the futures of their families) will wake up; will recognize deliberate distractions placed in our lives to feed our apathy that fosters our *Why Vote?* decisions, as we are coerced that it won’t make a difference.
We can hold OUR government representatives, who woo us but then do not represent us, to account.
We can choose those with the integrity and values WE determine will best make sure we have a Canada that serves the people, not the lobbyists.
Hopefully, more will realize that we all do have and can use a voice in what we want Canada to be. If change came in the leadership of Alberta, it can come to the leadership in Ottawa.
*US-defined US Persons in Canada* want to absolutely know that the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms is for ALL Canadians, no matter their national origin or that of their parent(s). We want and deserve leaders who will protect the rights of all Canadians. Litigation necessary because of their bad decisions to serve Canada’s *foreign financial institutions* rather than its people (and in doing so labelling us *US citizens who happen to reside in Canada*) should not be necessary to ensure this. The Charter is important to me — each Canadian needs to determine if it is to them — I so hope they will determine that it is. (I have narrowed down the Parties for which the Charter is not the important guidance for their decisions. I want to know which will protect all Canadians with the Charter.)
ADCS-ADSC has asked each *Party Leader* the following questions, and we must have answers from all on what there policy is — not continued political ambiguity, sitting on the fence watching which way the wind is blowing:
1. Will your party commit to repealing the FATCA IGA in its entirety?
2. If not, why not?
3. What action will your party take to protect Canadian citizens and residents from the demands of a foreign government under FATCA?
4. What action will your party take to uphold Canadian laws, the constitution, the Charter of Rights and Freedoms and Canadian sovereignty as they relate to FATCA?
5. What action will your party take to agree with our lawsuit that the FATCA enabling Act violates the Charter of Rights and Freedoms and Canada’s constitution? Will you direct the Ministry of Justice to quickly reach an acceptable settlement with us?
6. What action will your party take to ensure a foreign law does not prevail over Canadian privacy, human rights, banking and other laws?
7. What is your time frame for any commitment you may make?
I do not believe that the Leaders of the Liberal or NDP parties will ever give a straight answer to question #1 above and understand that the question has been asked and not answered. If I am wrong on this, please correct.
Although I have been voting Tory in the past, it is now impossible for me to continue to do so. In a February 5 2014 letter printed in Canada’s National Post I made the bold promise:
“… Mr. Caldwell should remind Stephen Harper that there are a million angry Canadians who the U.S. government deems to be “U.S. persons”. Should the Harper government assist the U.S. in implementing FATCA [it later did just that] none (including their children) will ever vote Tory again.”
I hope that these Canadians do not disappoint me.
Many like you, Stephen have voted Tory for years.
For us, it was mainly because of the broken promises, high taxes of the previous Liberal government, who broke contracts that cost us billions, raised taxes everywhere up to our eyes, said they would get rid of the GST but did not, but most of all was the Sponsorship scandal. Carrying bags of cash out the back door ( taxpayer cash) and many other crony misspending of taxpayer dollars.
We have had many successes with the Tory government, none going as far as ought nor as fast.
However we have been very disappointed with their treatment of our veterans using taxpayer cash to take our heroes to court to take away their benefits when all of Canada owes these veterans our very lives and they should have our gratitude forever and that should be reflected in how our government treats them, for the government is supposed to be US, the people. Disappointed to say the least with the Senate scandals. But nothing on this earth before or since compares to the betrayal of Canadians with the signing of the IGA.
It used to be that cowards turned and ran, showing the colour of their stripe but I do not believe anyone thought that cowards did not just turn but turned and fired on their own. Pointing their collective finger at their victims to save themselves.
But in this day and age of Soros I suppose that is to be expected.
So, just who does one give their faith and trust to in the political arena?
One can never vote for those who have so betrayed their own, and the Finance Committee Meeting will always come to mind when deciding just in whom one will place their faith.
Since it seems clear that those who get elected these days do not listen to those who voted them into office, but have given their ears to other voices and demands. It is our duty to give our faith to the areas in which we can at least try to see to it that the laws of our land bolster our freedom and democracy and enforces the precepts and foundation of that very democracy.
All politicians must know that the people have the final say in a democratically run country and conduct themselves accordingly or we are no longer either democratic or sovereign.
Yesterday I met with the Liberal candidate for my riding. She was the anchor for evening news for our local TV station when I freelanced for them.
Since I contacted her, she has been trying to get answers on the questions ADCS asked over a month ago. She also has not been able to get answers and does not understand why.
I gave her a quick FATCA education. She knows my vote and that of many others depends on the response.
Unfortunately, the NDP has also not responded to the questions (nor have Greens or the Cons). My NDP;s candidate’s wife was born in the U.S. so he says “We in our household are well aware of the financial devastation FATCA can cause, and of the current government’s utter failure to protect Canadian sovereignty against it.”
Despite the effect on his own family, he has not answered my questions about what the NDP would do. NOr has he given any indication that he is trying to get answers, despite me following up with him.
The Greens do not yet have a candidate. The Con candidate is the MPs who sent me information telling me of ny obligation to file FBARs when I contacted him four years ago. He has ignored all further correspondence from me.
I told the Liberal candidate that Native Canadian intends to be at the all candidates meeting asking very direct questions about FATCA. I did not tell her that he will be wearing his Second Class Canadian Citizen t-shirt. I hope they all have some answers by then.
None of the politicians get it about FATCA. What they don’t understand ANYONE can’t potentially have their data reported to the IRS. Someone gets a letter (or maybe not at all), doesn’t respond, the bank reports.
You don’t have to have any US connections to be FATCAed.
I told the Liberal candidate that Native Canadian intends to be at the all candidates meeting asking very direct questions about FATCA. I did not tell her that he will be wearing his Second Class Canadian Citizen t-shirt. I hope they all have some answers by then.
Way to go Native Canadian!!
Where does one get a “Second Class Canadian Citizen” tee?
@Tricia Moon – To get a second class tee shirt, just go online. There’s companies that will screen print anything you want on a T shirt..
@Tricia: Native says he is going to have them made and sell them as fundraisers for ADCS. I don’t know how far along he is in that process.
Anyone remember the old Molson “I am Canadian” tee shirts? How about some of those slightly modified to say “I am Canadian (or at least I used to be until Harper signed the @#$%^ FATCA IGA)”?
The part in parenthesis needs be in very small print so people have to get up close and squint to read it.
Thanks Don, Blaze and Maz!
Although I am not a member of the NDP, I received the following email last night:
”
It’s done! Conservative and Liberal MPs joined forces to pass Bill C-51, the so called anti-Terrorism Act.
While we tried everything to make the government backtrack, and to convince the Liberals to do the right thing, in the end Mr. Trudeau and his MPs chose fear over defending our way of life.
Canadians deserve better.
I am proud to lead a party that fights for its principles and stands up for Canadians. We listened to the concerns of thousands of Canadians and the many experts who believe Bill C-51 will erode our rights and freedoms, and ultimately make our democracy weaker. I want to assure you that an NDP-led government will undo the damage caused by C-51 and other wrong-headed legislation imposed by the Harper government.
You can check the links below to learn more about our opposition to C-51:
Again, I appreciate your interest to build a better Canada—one that respects the rights and freedoms of a true democratic society. I encourage you to share my email with your friends and family.
All the best,
Tom Mulcair, M.P. (Outremont)
Leader of the Official Opposition
New Democratic Party of Canada”
I noticed the sentence “I want to assure you that an NDP-led government will undo the damage caused by C-51 and other wrong-headed legislation imposed by the Harper government.” I’m thinking of asking Mulcair if he considers the FATCA – enabling IGA legislation “wrong-headed legislation” – they must, they proposed some great amendments and then, when they were defeated, voted against the bill – and, if so, to answer the questions asked by the ADCS.
Will i be wasting my time?
Now that Mulcair has committed to undoing wrong-headed legislation, will others ask Mulcair and other NDP candidates these questions again?
This can’t hurt:
Sign and share please. Stephen Harper has acted outside of his legal authority by passing #BillC51 without making it meet a s. 1 analysis or using s. 33 ‘The Notwithstanding Clause’. He has willfully violated the laws of Canada. He no longer has the legal or moral authority to govern Canada. We are a law abiding country and that starts with government.
No, u are not wasting your time… ask away… As I told my kids… there is nothing stupid about asking a question… its stupid if u don’t ask.. Thank u for sharing the email.
Only problem I have with NDP email:
**I want to assure you that an NDP-led government will undo the damage caused by C-51 and other wrong-headed legislation imposed by the Harper government**
What do they mean undo… repeal or amend it? I have been reading news articles & I am not getting a clear reading on their course of action…
@Sandra Harris
Harper has lost his compass… Do we have a PM or a dictator? When did our great country become a communist country that all people needed to be monitored… corrected… etc…
Remember…. vote ABC… Anyone But Con… Liberals are dead to me… so I will be voting very carefully… Mr Harper was correct… when he is done… we will not recognize Canada… Oops… did I just violate C-51…. well crap… now I am an all around criminal in Canada/US… never thought that would happen in my lifetime…
Welcome Sandra!
Thank you for making those videos and signatures will be forthcoming.

Geez Louise… how do u keep track of the newbies….
@Sandra Harris
Sorry for my bad manners… Welcome… Thank u for your links…
Thanks for the welcome 🙂 Thanks also for supporting my efforts. #Solidarity!
Harper never had a moral compass. He wouldn’t recognize one if it bit him in the bum. He’s not a PM. He is owned by the corporations. People in Canada have been unrepresented since 2006. It will take decades to restore this beautiful country. Time for CHANGE! (Liberals are dead to me too. Bill C-51)
@Queenston: The more people who ask Mulcair (and Trudeau and May) to answer ADCS questions the better.
It is important they know that votes depend on it.
Remember Mulcair sent letters about FATCA and the NDP took a more public stance about this issue after numerous people e-mailed him following his faux pas at a meeting in Toronto.
So, I encourage you and others to follow up with the leaders and insist they answer those questions. None of them have responded.
I did follow up e-mails last week. Again, no response.
Please everyone ask them. Here is a link to the letters with the questions that went to each leader and several MPs.
Depending politicians to give you an answer is wishful thinking, but perhaps writing all newly elected 56 SNP MPs in Westminster might be an interesting exercise. The English desperately tried to keep Scotland in the Union, but instead got a block vote of SNP MPs. Nobody predicted that outcome.
Perhaps email the newly elected MPs and see what the SNP’s position is on FATCA?
The situation is more complicated in Scotland than can be written in a blog.
@Sandra
Welcome! I enjoy both of your recordings so much, cannot stop listening to them. So curious how you did that? Every time I hear something new and just boils my blood we’ve had to endure 7 years of this guy.
