Although I haven’t lived in the States for almost 28 years, I just e-mailed “my Congressman” urging him to support Bill S.887. I find it ironic that in the U.S.’s policy of citizen based taxation, a person considered a U.S. citizen abroad cannot even contact a U.S. legislator without a U.S. address.
@Alberta,
I haven’t lived in the United States for almost 40 years but contacted initially my Congressman, Senators, and their staffers using my last address in Washington state, and you might want to try using your last U.S. address. I have found that a phone call followed up by an email works “best”. I personally visit the staffers as well every time I return “home.”
We should support this anti-FATCA legislation — and I have not given up completely on changing bad U.S. laws through legislation — but I and some others are more inclined these days to spend all of our time supporting change by litigation in Canada and in the U.S. aimed at killing FATCA (the first step in dealing a lethal blow to CBT):
—ADCS-ADSC for Canada ligation (Please ask your Alberta friends to DONATE NOW)
We can only hope the Republican’s get control of both houses and the Presidency …. sadly, I think this is the only way we have a chance. I actually supported Obama on gays in the military, gay marriage but opposed him re Obamacare, and obviously FATCA and CBT…for me, despite my non support of the Republicans social/conservative platform the Democrats and Obama are obviously pure Socialist Progressives that really believe in big government, taxes and the right of the government to intrude on every aspect of our lives and the unlimited extraterritorial power of the US ….. This has to end….wish some sanity would prevail.
Hi Steve Klaus et al
I have been sending CCs (by Canada Post!) of my letter to the democraticparty@democrats.org
to editorial departments (Washinton Post, San Antonio Express News, Globe and Mail) other Democratic organizations, and my health care providers because this situation has made me phyically and emotionally sick. Not just FATCA, the whole invasiveness. I am not wealthy. MyMSP is subsidized! I’ll likely never own a home. I’m 60.
Have sent to others too, including Republicans Abroad with a cheque for $100. I have never voted in a US election but I will be next time (unless I drop US citizenship) I was a Democrat suporter. Not now And not in 2016!
just tried to send a long comment. was Democrat. just donated to Republicans Abroad.
We’re learning how to vote in 2016!
@ Jennifer,
I just found your first comment and put it on the thread. It had got caught by the spam filter. No clue why — definitely not spam — but that happens occasionally, so we keep an eye out. Thanks for commenting and for spreading the word to the press and the Dems and your health care providers.
Thank you Tim for being one of our very valuable set of eyes on Congress.
it looks like you have to be signed up to read the link you gave.
