Patricia brought to our attention on another thread that the World Economic Forum is having its Annual Meeting at Davos and has several webcast of meetings
The programme for the five days is at this link.
Wednesday 23 Jan, beginning 0900 CET, focuses on the Global Financial Context.
Many sessions are webcast and archived, and people can participate by Twitter.
*My understanding is Jim Flaherty will be attending along with Mark Carney. As Tim Geithner is leaving office on Friday I don’t think there will be anyone from the US government there of note.
Here is some news in French about Swiss Federal Council’s participation in the Davos meeting (see articles also on the righthand side) http://www.rts.ch/info/economie/4600342-ueli-maurer-critique-a-davos-la-pression-des-grands-etats-sur-la-suisse.html
@Tim I just heard on Swiss television that indeed there is nobody of import there from the US, deal being the the new administration hasn’t been put together yet. Clinton is tied up in a congressional comittee hearing with Kerry (her future replacement).
I wonder if there will be any discussion on FATCA. I did not see it mentioned in any of the presentations in the schedule.
At 9am today, in the presentation called The Global Financial Context, they apparently talked about the Real world impact of Basel III and Solvency II
Seems like it would have been a good presentation to talk about FATCA as well.
It is incredible that FATCA might not even been mentioned at this meeting.
@Tim
Your understanding is official, as of today, but then you get the same bulletins as I do…
MINISTER FLAHERTY TO HIGHLIGHT CANADA’S ECONOMIC AND FISCAL LEADERSHIP AT WORLD ECONOMIC FORUM

@ bubblebustin
I see your comment has appeared at …. http://www.canadavisa.com/canada-immigration-discussion-board/moving-to-canada-from-us-pros-and-cons-discussion-topic-t60429.120.html
Thank goodness, because I skimmed all 9 pages there and didn’t find anyone seriously warning USA to Canada immigrants about the US citzenship-based taxation vexation (I could have missed something though). Some of the comments, pros and cons, were quite an eyeful.
@bubblebustin, when Flaherty and the Dept of Finance say”….Minister Flaherty will participate in sessions at the WEF’s annual
meeting that address the economic imperatives for 2013; economic and
financial uncertainties for infrastructure and urban development; and
policy actions for sustainable and inclusive growth….”
Wouldn’t you think that FATCA would be an “economic imperative” that should be on the agenda – either way?
And can he meet with the financial and business sectors without discussing FATCA?
@badger and bubblebustin,
If he doesn’t discuss FATCA, his silence on it will speak volumes to US Persons in Canada.
@Badger, Calgary411 & Em
I’m beginning to wonder if aliens took over the world and gave everyone the choice of either the red or blue FATCA pill, as it’s evident that most people, Flaherty included, are living in some parallel universe where to them we appear to be paranoid raving lunatics warning of some imagined apocalypse soon to ravage the earth!
“The red pill and its opposite, the blue pill, are pop culture symbols representing the choice between the blissful ignorance of illusion (blue) and embracing the sometimes painful truth of reality (red).
The terms, popularized in science fiction culture, derive from the 1999 film The Matrix. In the movie, the main character Neo is offered the choice between a red pill and a blue pill. The blue pill would allow him to remain in the fabricated reality of the Matrix. The red pill would lead to his escape from the Matrix and into the “real world”.”

A search of World Economic Forum and FATCA produce no results for me.
@bubblebustin, strangely, lots of logical searches for anything AND FATCA come up with NO results.
*The muzzle is on, of course
