hello again just a quick question. with regard to renouncation will they use the ds4079 as a basis for their paperwork/case? I ask only because this ds4079 form is the only form listed online at my local embassy Or when I make an appointment will I be asked to fill in another set of forms?
thanks so much to everyone who takes the time to read my posts and reply- it’s much appreciated.
The DS4079 is ONLY used if you want to relinquish.
If you renounce, the DS4079 is destroyed and a different form is prepared.
I wanted to have a backdated relinquishment, but this was denied to me as I’d used my US passport. So I renounced instead, and the DS4079 was destroyed. In fact, the other form had already been prepared by the Embassy for use–they filled it in, and I only had to check it over and sign it.
@purpleflower
Stop worrying about DS4079, it is NOT relevant to a renunciation but the some Embassies make you fill it in in case you may be claiming a backdated relinquishment. Please listen to birdperson, hers was destroyed in the London Embassy as it was not relevant for her renunciation. Most Embassies do not use it unless one is trying to claim a backdated relinquishment. Mine didn’t ans was adamant it wasn’t necessary for a renunciation.
You will not be refused a renunciation. You will be surprised how simple the process is. You will be given a simple renunciation document to sign and then take the oath. The staff are helpful and professional, if not empathetic.
Really, its ‘simples’ 🙂 !
@ purpleflower
To answer your question simply, the DS 4079 is NOT used for the basis for the renunciation paperwork, it is only used to asses if you qualify for a backdated relinquishment. The renunciation paperwork is simple, and is not concerned with US passport use. It basically states when you acquired US citizenship and the date you renounce it!
you will fill in Ds4080 (the oath of renunciation) and 4082 ( statements of understanding)-Don’t sign them in advance .
They should be provided to you with the instructions for an appointmen
Show up, pay the fee, sign the oath, hand them a pre addressed post express envelope and Bob’ our uncle.
No need for a lawyer,accountant,or stress.. Later on you decide what to do vis a vis tax filing if anything.
Actually, the London Embassy gave me the DS4080 at my appointment, not beforehand.
But Portland and everyone else is right. The whole experience is very calm and professional. I’d even say compassionate. The vice counsel who dealt with me was very kind when my hand shook as I signed the renunciation form.
I’ve decided not to do any tax filing. I was never in the system, and I’m not entering it now.
I was given the DS4080 and 4081 on an email beforehand and to sign at the Consulate. Every Embassy seems to be slightly different but mine was adamant the 4079 was not needed to be filled for a renunciation. The Consul was very pleasant and said she completely understood why people were renouncing.
@purpleflower
It is important to carefully read through the documents
that the Embassy prepares for you to sign as I found a couple of mistakes on mine. The Embassy quickly prepared another for me.
hi birdperson,portland,heidi & Phyllis. Thanks so much for your comments and taking the time out to reply. The form ds4079 is nearly ready to go just a few more queries.
q5a – theres a table which says dates and countries of residence outside the us since birth? is this only applicable to those that acquired citizenship outside the us? or do i have to list where ive lived? confused by this.
6&7. These are quite self explanatory i guess. Do i just write an approx date for q6 &q7. how i found out?
11. with regards to govt job do i have to give country, job title and duties? so far ive only verbally accepted i dont have a start date or contract. could i give a short high level synposis of the job? or is it not necesary?
q17,18 & 19.can i leave these blank?? confused by these.
thanks so much everyone
@Purpleflower
Q5.
The dates and countries of Residence list follows on from the statement NOT born in the US, so I would assume you ignore the list. It’s all part of question %.
Q6 Born in the US
Q7. Always knew
Q11.Gov job. No need to go into details. Just say accepted Gov job on date X. country Y
Q 17, 18, 19. Leave blank or say Not Applicable.
This form is not relevant to you and will be disregarded.
Purple flower
Please do listen to us.
This form, as Heidi says, will be destroyed by the embassy. You will be renouncing, so an entirely different form will be presented to you for signature.
You’re worrying about a form which will end up in a bin minutes after you enter the Embassy.
I moved the proofreading discussion to a new Renunciation Spin-Off Conversations thread, to keep this thread focused on people’s Questions and Answers.

OK
Thanks Pacifica
Hello again- so sorry for all the questions. Just a few more.
q4b- place of issue of American passport- mine doesn’t appear to have one. should it have? can I leave this blank?
things have moved on from a few days ago. I’ve a provisional start date for my new job. can I put the date down as provisional?
@purpleflower
Yes, put provisional start date of new job but it is not important for renunciation.
Can you remember where you applied for your US passport eg London Embassy? Otherwise put ‘unknown’.
I was reading up on this- the place of issue is where it says authority -is that right? if so at the time when i renewed my passport by post and sent it to my local embassy. However, under authority it says usa?
Email Embassy and ask them.
do i ask them what the place of issue is or if they have a record of my passport being processed there?
@purpleflower
On second thoughts, just put, London Embassy, USA authority. They can see your passport and correct form it if its wrong.
Even though it doesnt say that? would they have a record of my passport being issued by them?
my passport says dept of state, usa even though i applied by post via my local embassy.
All passports are approved by the State dept. It use to be that the Embassy did it directly but I think now everything goes through the State dept in Washington.
If it was sent through London, then put London, USA authority.
Its not important, the Embassy will go through the document with you and any queries you have can be sorted then as they have done with others who have reported here on Brock.
For goodness sake, stop fussing. Leave it blank or say I don’t know. These are not trick questions. As for your job , it doesn’t matter . Don’t even mention it. You are renouncing
@portland
I am wondering if purpleflower is bonafide? I know some people have a stressful time with this, so I was prepared to give the benefit of the doubt.
Perhaps another Plaxy, Phyllis?
I have my first informal interview soon. what should I expect from this initial interview? are they likely to ask questions on why and how long I’ve been thinking about it?
