And with the lightning quick speed the US legislature is famous for, a solution for today’s problems can be looked for as soon as 2047.
Hmmm.
Interesting. Donald S. Beyer was the former Ambassador to Switzerland and the very Democrat who signed the US-Swiss IGA on behalf of the United States.
Now Financial Director of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee.
Urged to hold a hearing. Right. My cat is 19 years old and deaf, but she hears better than Congress.
The signers are interesting though. Especially Beyer and Comstock, who apparently represent adjoining constituencies.

THANK YOU FOR ASKING:
For a Congressional Hearing into tax issues impacting constituents abroad.
@RepComstock @RepDonBeyer @congbillposey
For your bi-partisan letter to: @RepRichardNeal & @RepKevinBrady
Would retweet if I could. Not on Twitter nor Facebook or anything other than here.
Hey Norman, my cat is 19 too!! The question for her isn’t whether she can hear but will she listen!
Exciting to read this letter, and the signatories. Even if it seems like what they are asking for is pretty tame. Anything is better than nothing!
Fred – I think what they’re asking for is very interesting.
Privacy and denial of service are the basis for citing Roe as a precedent in the defeated US anti-FATCA lawsuit, if I’m not mistaken.
The illegality of the IGAs is the basis of Rand Paul’s complaint.
I believe this hearing is just an exercise into the ways and means of protecting fatca by shoring up privacy concerns and bank access problems.
Mr Donald Beyer was the Ambassador who told me personally that unfortunately I was collateral damage in the fight against money laundering.
Heidi – you may be right.
I’m guessing that Brady and whatsisname will eventually respond – anyone know if that’s correct? Is there, like, an obligation to respond?
If there’s a response, things may become clearer.
I don’t know if this link may have been posted before on IBS; dated 2014.
Congressman Posey has opposed FATCA from the get go. Read his letters to past and present Sec Treasurers. I don’t think by expressing opposition he’s trying to “shore up” privacy concerns and bank access problems. What he doesn’t want is for the US to reciprocate.
My thanks to these three who are trying to do something on our behalf. Ways and Means didn’t listen to any of us who wrote all those letters to them a few years ago, but maybe they might revisit that collection if encouraged by three of their own to take up this issue. Dare we hope?
Better contact the members of Ways and Means to see if they are willing to support this hearing.
Even I don’t think i could hear the response of this hearing Lol
YES contact them! “Even” you? Does being an ant give you exceptional hearing? Do tell.
“Even I don’t think i could hear the response of this hearing“
There could be a written response to the letter though; which might cast light as to whether we can expect to see FATCA and the IGAs retained as they are, or amended, or made use of in the campaign to demolish Roe.
Nice to perhaps get another W&M hearing. But I think we may end up with the same dialogue as at the last Congressional FATCA hearing, where privacy and expatriate human rights issues were of peripheral concern to the Greater Good of (let’s completely change the subject) catching drug smugglers, juvenile sex traffickers, and terrorists. At the end of which, Chairman Mark Meadows, who had appeared to be on our side and asked some good questions, essentially shrugged his shoulders and spoke to the effect of “Let’s wait and see.”
From all I’ve seen, these Congressional hearings and calls for public input accomplish exactly as much as “thoughts and prayers” tossed at gun violence victims.
@plaxy
There may be that long game for the GOP in using FATCA to strike down Roe v Wade. Will be interesting to see if that plays out…
@plaxy
Can you explain the Roe reference, I must have missed this connection.
Interesting letter from Beyer, in which he comes over as a reasonable guy but I see he echos Shumer that ‘most of the early problems have been worked out’. They haven’t.
@BB You are an eternal optimist, I sincerely hope you are right but the letter specifically focuses on privacy and banking access which is only a part of the solution we have been seeking.
Heidi – To me this letter looks like the kind of letter that gets written in order to provide an opportunity for reply. The choice of Beyer as one of the signers looks interesting because of Beyer’s history as the Democratic politician landed with the fallout in Switzerland – hottest of FATCA hot seats.
The Roe connection is the anti-FATCA case cited abortion-related rulings, including Roe, as precedents – i.e., similar points of law at issue. FATCA is by no means the only case that has been lined up for a Roe contest, though, and for all I can guess it may not be even in the running.
I think we’ll just have to wait and see what happens. Sadly, it may not make much difference for Europeans what the Americans do or don’t do about FATCA, as CRS Wider Approach will still be law in most European countries. Interesting, though.
The above is merely my speculation.
Privacy issues and bank access? What about all the other damage and havoc CBT has created? What about double taxation and how usually 2 different tax systems dont jive? What about the hardship of not being able to save for old age? ETC ETC ETC.
Beyer is a Democrat = bipartisan request.
They should attach the letter from the Dutch Government: https://twitter.com/USAccidental/status/1037073868089974784
And there was much rejoicing, yeah.
