@BB, then you better get your BUNS out there!
HOT DOG, that’s a good one, WhiteKat!
Thanks….I thought so too. Maybe I SHOULD bring my dog!
@Bubblebustin. Relish??
Yes, I relish the idea of hotdogging it in front of the US consulate.
@ Shovel
Ok, good point. But Roy Berg is a true “American in Canada” whose professional livelihood is supported by maintaining this ridiculous injustice. I don’t know who or what usxcanada is, which is just the way he/she wants it.
@usxcanada
I take it that’s a no. Too bad you’re so cynical (and maybe more traumatized by the IRS than any of us can imagine). It would be interesting to meet you in person.
@ Mr. A.
Speaking of weenies, maybe you weren’t around for USX’s two main mantras:
“Sauve qui peut” (individual salvation) and “do the drudgery” (through meticulous compliance).
These two points, and especially the latter, are where Roy Berg and USX intersect.
If I recall correctly from a few weeks ago an article in the Japan Times, a US citizen, an English teacher with proper visa, had joined a protest near the US embassy in Tokyo, protesting (nonviolently) against US participation in the Vietnamese war, and Japan deported him for it.
(This is the same Japan that didn’t deport a US citizen who illegally resided in Japan, illegally operated a company in Japan, illegally failed to pay salaries, issued false salary and income tax certificates, and failed to appear in court when directed. (This tangent is actually somewhat on topic because the IRS ordered me in writing to refile my 2002 return attaching a false salary and income tax certificate and declaring under penalty of perjury that to the best of my knowledge and belief it was true and correct.))
Credit where credit is due. “Do the drudgery” attributes to the fabled Just Me. If you don’t know who Just Me is, you get an F in Brock history. The phrase roughly means: Do not flop face-first into a cowpie because you lit out running across the treacherous FATCA pasture while blinded by your own tears.
Nope. Not cynical. My time in the streets includes lying down in the road at least twice. And flaunting symbolic blood at least twice. But not the two together. Yet. (I never met up with Roy Berg for any of this. So no association.)
Think about how prim and how boring and how advertorial and how poorly placed are the very few emotive (as opposed to excruciatingly technical) column inches of journalistic coverage that the vociferously bemoaned extraterritorial-US-person-plight has ever given rise to.
If it bleeds, it leads. Even were the blood to turn out to be ketchup.
Contre nous de la tyrannie
L’étendard sanglant est levé!
@usxcanada
Forget the blood. Just have your non-cynical self write to the new AG (in plain English) and make a donation to the ADCS.
@usxcanada, re; “..or tippytoe over to the curb edge after imploring rent-a-cops for direction on what is to be done.”
Holding on to a (by now) worn example of how we have failed to meet your standards. We got it then, and get it now. Thanks for breaking silence to lecture us again on how we are not up to the mark.
I appreciated your early website. It was very valuable. Thank you for that. The other cryptics and lectures, not so much.
More was accomplished at the event you’re dissing us for than you’re giving credit for. Building trust and solidarity for one. Triumphing over fear and anxiety. Finding common cause. Doing something rather than worrying isolated in one’s own compliance nightmare.
Something constructive was accomplished on the day in question – even if no blood or ketchup was shed.
@USX
Nice to see no denial about this one:
USX says:
I promote the tag line Sauve qui peut.

Re: drudgery, the mistake is to confuse the originator (Just Me = M V H; goodness, he’s been on a long hike) for the one who used it as a mantra. For example:
USX says:
Newcomers desperate to find simple reassurances on particular points fail to do the drudgery as they fall into the waiting arms of would-be helpful new “friends” … who push “answers” that fail to hold up.

USX says:
Some of the difficulty attributes to ML for not doing enough of the drudgery.

USX says:
As an early voluminous Brocker used to say, there is no substitute for you doing your own drudgery.

USX says:
In the famous words of Just Me, you have to do the drudgery for yourself.
To charge ahead with shedding US citizenship and mop up the taxes after or never could cause way more problems than it solves.

The mistake I actually made was to conflate the drudgery mantra with this unwavering position:
USX says:
This strikes me as strong evidence that relinquishment will fall under 877A regardless, that administration has a party line, that the fabled back-dated CLN — like the snark — does not exist.

Roy Berg, his trademark at Moodys compliance promo events, couldn’t have said it better himself.
