Excellent visibility for ADCS in this new article by Robert Wood in Forbes. Comments are open.
The Alliance for the Defense of Canadian Sovereignty (www.adcs-adsc.ca) sounds a little like a new world militia or a trade group promoting maple syrup. Actually, it’s neither, and American legislators may soon learn that too well. The organization has lawyered up, hiring a Washington D.C. lawyer tasked with exploring legal options to reverse the practices of the United States government. Why?
Because the U.S. government is making it downright difficult for Canadians that are also ‘Accidental Americans’ from freeing themselves of the burdens of U.S. citizenship. Accidental Americans include those born in the U.S. but who left at a young age to live permanently abroad. The organization claims they have no meaningful ties to the U.S. but are stuck with a lifetime of U.S. taxation on their non-U.S. income. Ouch!
Fantastic news to wake up to! And the article is excellent.
Grateful and thankful to Stephen, and all those who made and make this possible. And to the funders – Laura Secord and a generous Anonymous donor.
Balm to those scarred by the obdurate US maltreatment of those living outside the US.
No thanks to our own government where we live and many are citizens. No thanks to the Harper government which hasn’t lifted a finger to use diplomatic channels to influence the US to release Canadians (and others) born involuntary USextraterritorrial tax-and-penalty subjects for life and beyond.
For shame that Canadians and others are having to free themselves without any help or even acknowledgement from their own sovereign government, or the US government who claims them.
I hope that this spreads further.

not sure if the above helps us or not. When I read the comments following the article, a lot of people just don’t get it. Plus, I really hate it when people think expats are willing to pay tax to a country that does nothing for them. I was hatched in the US but I left as a child. I don’t owe the US a cent!
@James, That article cites billionaire Jim Rogers. Yeah, that helps. If he could donate one week’s earnings to ADSC!
Our juvenile political leaders were so intent on collecting revenue to support the Marxist programs that they never thought it thru to its logical conclusion. Now a new generation is having to live with those unintended consequences. Every step they took brought us closer to total control of all the wealth of our citizens. Does this sound familiar to you—it does to me—the earley 1900’s when Marxists were taking control of the Russian people, they used control tactics. Now we see the real purpose or the unintended consequences. Either way it is bad for the world. Lead us not into temtation——-
Great news. Now the rest of the world! As usual I copied this info to the EU.
@James,
Unless I have a loan with a government saying I owe them $x then I don’t owe them anything.
At the root of all this ‘owing’ is the notion that I don’t deserve what I earn. Or that I earned it at the expense of others. I earned what I have and the government has had it’s hand in my pocket the whole time. I personally don’t see why the dividends I get from foreign stocks should be taxed by the US at all. They can hardly claim they build the roads and bridges the companies I own use.
The government should go looking to those who are net consumers of the government before coming to me.
Nice to see ADCS mentioned in the first sentence!
Robert Wood’s articles are good in the sense that they stir the pot. But we need more than stirring the pot. I wonder if he is not convinced of our cause or he has interests to protect so he maintains a sort of neutrality.
If the Republicans are deadlocked against the Democrats and are trying to get somewhere with tax reform- then the litigation going on is perfect for them to donate to, to further their objectives. I think every violation of the US Constitution or the Canadian Charter is very serious. But if one can’t get anywhere in parliament- then the parties could join the legal efforts to make for change. So this is not just an expat issue. It is also about inversions and corporate tax. All of these people in the homeland should hear about this and help – to effect change that doesn’t seem possible through debate in the government. Voting seemingly gets nobody anywhere. The US constitution and the Canadian charter have to be returned to their function within government. A democracy is really only as good as the intelligence of their voters. If- as noted on another thread- 59% vote to punish companies for inverting, then the majority of the people are simply out for revenge, and not well informed nor versed in economics. Should then the majority get their way? ( The same thing happens in Iran. The educated “intelligencia” living in Tehran and other big university cities voices are drowned out by the many many uneducated votes from the small villages, which throws Iran into a religious backwater that many iranians who are more worldly would prefer not to have. )
Yeah- this was a good article that didn’t make my stomach turn.
happy that Wood finally referred to us as Canadians. hate those writers who call us “Expat Americans”, makes me want to vomit.
This new initiative is fantastic – well done to everyone involved. Just a couple of points though:
(1) This applies to “Accidental Americans” in all countries not just Canada.
(2) The number of “Accidental Americans” who are considered US citizens by parentage only is perhaps at least as big as those born in the US. These people have even less reason to be classified as US citizens. This group was not highlighted in the press release. I am wondering if this was deliberate or not?
Please don’t take this as any form of criticism. I am in awe of the work being done on behalf of “accidentals” everywhere.
