A recent letter published in the Squamish Chief, called “The FATCA of the Matter”, by Suzanne Herman, must have upset some people with the truth. Not to be outdone, Bill Cavanagh, former Program Manager, Capital Markets, Bank of Montreal has managed to get a counter letter published, titled “The Facts about FATCA”.

Update Apr 2, 2014:
MP John Weston responds: http://www.squamishchief.com/opinion/letters/safeguards-lauded-1.939921
Bravo, WhiteKat. I hope the Squamish Chief Editor will think about and answer every one of your important questions! And, every of our Canadian government representatives?
@Whitekat;
Kudos, Bravo, High Five…wish I could think of something else to say., well I can and that is Thank You!!
@Canadian Brockers. YOU are the front line and are now carrying the weight of battle against clinging US nationality for many of us.
Excellent questions @WhiteKat, and a good basis for use as rebuttal to other MPs taking the same manufactured Conservative party propaganda on FATCA.
Thank you @bubblebustin for the letter, and also to all those who commented.
very interesting that such a small town newspaper has garnered such international attention. . 3 weeks running letters to the editor and the print ad. so yes lets hope that the 4th letter also gets published.
now if only the provincial and national media would step up to the plate!! but perhaps there are a few more cracks in the dam each day….one can only hope
Ace WhiteKat.
After BMO’s first response to me about Bill Cavanaugh’s letter, I again contacted them on March 31. Here is what I said:
My question was not about FATCA. I am very aware of FATCA.
My question was does BMO share Mr. Cavanaugh’s view of Canadians who simply had the misfortune to be born in the United States.
Your response does not answer that question. By not disagreeing with someone who used Bank of Montreal in his signature line, I must now assume you do share his view if you don`t clarify otherwise.
Here is BMO’s reply today:
Ms Swanson,
Thank you for contacting BMO Bank of Montreal about the comments made by Bill Cavanaugh regarding the Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act (FATCA). Please accept my apology for the delay in responding.
I apologize that I did not address your concerns in your initial email.
Ms Swanson, as a former employee, I would like to assure you that Mr. Cavanaugh does not speak for Bank of Montreal and Bank of Montreal does not adopt his comments. I regret the concern his comments caused.
Thank you for choosing BMO Bank of Montreal for your everyday banking needs.

That’s great, Blaze. That would go nicely in the response section if Mr Cavanagh’s letter at the Squamish Chief, considering all of the others got wiped out in their site upgrades. Better yet, why not your own letter to the editor dispelling all of Mr Cavanagh’s myths that include his opinion that the Charter doesn’t protect permanent residents in Canada?
@blaze
that would be a great comment to see appear in the chief’s letters to the editors to make it 5 weeks in a row
