Which American based company will he work for I wonder? Sad to say I do wonder if he got a plum in the capitulation to FATCA.
He says the decision to resign was not related in any way to his health.
The sudden resignation of someone so important to the Conservative government makes you wonder why he really did resign. Maybe he’s disgusted with himself for signing the IGA and resigning out of a sense of self loathing.
he can now do the same as Mick Jagger’s girlfriend.
I suspect he’ll work for some big bank that has an interest in having the IGA signed.
Maybe he’ll be working together with the “sit tight” guy.
I always thought the Irish in him would do us proud by standing up to the Americans. I hate it when I’m wrong. If he does end up working for a big bank, I’ll be thoroughly pissed. He betrayed Canada in the worst way.
If we think WE feel powerless against FATCA & the IGA, imagine what it must be like to be the minister of a country unable to protect the people from THUGS.
it’s a revolving door between the finance ministry and a big fat job at a financial shop. canada is the same corrupt banana republic as the US.
@All
Wait and see. For what it’s worth, I do NOT believe that he either made the decision to sign the IGA or supported it. In any case, Mr. Flaherty fought FATCA longer, harder and in a more public way than any other government official I know of.
I think we should wish him well. That said, the comment section to the Globe article is a good place to do some public education on FATCA.
It is being discussed at this moment on Power and Politics CBC TV
@uscitizenabroad If he was so opposed to fatca, he should have resigned in protest before the IGA. So, no, I do not wish him well.
He said he made the decision to resign earlier this year with his family. If it didn’t have anything to do with his health maybe it had to do with the IGA. The IGA may be signed but it’s not the law yet. The dreamer in me wishes he was resigning so he could join the fight against the IGA but that’s unlikely since he would also be fighting against the Conservative government.
Nothing is as it appears on the surface in politics – unless sex and the internet is involved and then it’s usually exactly what it looks like.
Not surprised he has his “pension” job waiting and it will be interesting to see just how richly he is rewarded for his years of service.
Zerohedge is speculating that it’s either the impeding housing sector implosion (and it will implode, just a question of when) or the loonie debasement of late. But it could just as easily be another shuffle in preparation for the next election, which some Liberals I know seem to think will be sooner rather than Oct 2015.
Oh well. Wonder who the next guy will be and what he has to say about the CRA collecting on behalf of the IRS?
I just hope he had an OMG, I’m in over my head moment, just like we have all had. I don’t know if this is good or bad news. Who will follow? Will they be up-to-snuff with all the blow back re FATCA? Will he burn all of that when he cleans out his desk? (Yes, I can always find SOMETHING to worry about).
He never answered even one of my letters to him. I cannot say that I will miss him. He did, however, speak out directly to the Americans about Fatca. It seems he was then forced to back off as Harper was and still is a puppet of Obama. Makes me sick!
It also stated that the handwriting was clear during the Question Period following the budget because Harper was allowing other ministers to field questions while Flaherty sat and watched. Dissension in the ranks is not permitted in the Con Party. Plus, Kingmaker Kinney might have decided that a new Finance Minister was in order – again because they have an election and a perceived (hard to tell just how real at this point) threat in Justin Trudeau.
My comment, among the torrent of comments, was: Flaherty came in like a lion, roaring against the USA’s FATCA attack, and then he went out like a bedraggled lamb after signing a FATCA agreement with the USA on February 5th. The CRA will now be an office of the IRS and all banks will be agents of the CRA/IRS. Flaherty and the Harper government kicked Canadian sovereignty in the gut and stripped privacy rights away from 1 million Canadian residents, their families and their associates. However, Flaherty did leave the Big Five bankers smiling at the success of their pro-FATCA lobbying efforts. I think he tried to be a good Finance Minister in many ways but when faced with FATCA, Flaherty turned out to be a paper tiger, every bit as eager to lick Uncle Sam’s storm trooper boots as Harper has always been. I’ll be thinking of Flaherty and the Harper government on July 1st this year when FATCA is scheduled to take effect. I’ll be thinking how Canada’s capitulation to a US law, 200 years past its victory in the War of 1812, is such a dishonour to the memory of Sir Isaac Brock.
I think he may have been one of the more principled of the Harper clan but not enough to push back on FATCA which he very publicly denounced. This changes nothing and nothing will change until the Harper Conservatives are gone – every last one of them.
I just signed up to post at cbc and it keeps saying awaiting moderation. What does that mean?
Maybe Flaherty realized that all the penny pinching in the world won’t save Canada’s finances when our bankrupt neighbour (the US) is coming at us with a gun and saying give me some of your money or I’ll take all of it because the US dollar is the world’s reserve currency so you know I can.
You know what happens with school yard bullies who take your lunch money. You give it to them once and they will take it all forever.
The US is too broke to start wars with other countries so now they’re just going to keep stealing the lunch money of all the little kids who always behave themselves.

Good Riddance to the US jack boot licker. Isaac Brock would roll in his grave if he knew about the newest Canadian traitor.
I wonder how many retirements he ruined with his campaign lies over trusts.

Here is a link to an article that speculates that Flaherty’s opposition to income splitting, among other things, might have forced him into a corner.
