No, I don’t believe non-citizens should be given the vote. Citizenship indicates someone is committed and in Canada with both feet, especially considering the stricter rules the Harper government is applying to thin out the “Canadians of convenience”.
This has long been a pet peeve of mine. Getting through the citizenship application maze of nonsense with its ridiculous and largely unexplained wait times and dealing with immigration agents who seemingly make up the rules as they go along (I have literally asked the same question of three separate govt agents and been given completely different answers), it is unjust to expect them to cool their heels in their communities with essentially no voice in matters that most directly impact them and their children.
This idea that we shouldn’t be allowed to help chose ward representatives or city councils is rooted in prejudice – mostly directed at people who aren’t “white” enough to calm the fears of the native Canadians who feel that their winning of the birth lottery gives them the special right to ignore the needs of their second class neighbors.
I agree that extending the vote to provincial and federal elections is pushing it but people should be able to chose municipal representatives and school trustees where they live regardless.
Well, there sure was a lot of FATCA and CBT talk in this interview. By the end, I forgot what the original question was. Loved it!

Excellent interview.
As for non citizen voting; I believe that I am correct in saying that British Commonwealth Citizens can vote in any other (maybe many or most perhaps) Commonwealth country in which they are living. Thus a Canadian resident in Jamaica can vote in Jamaica. Indeed, a Canadian citizen can run for Parliament in Jamaica whereas a US citizen can not.
Thank you to this panel for your discussion and posting the video of it here where it can get further distribution. And, so on and so on! I have sent it on to those on my “email contact list” who I thought would have an interest and, of course, on to my “Canadian Government representatives”.
A short while ago I had a phone call from NDP MP Murray Rankin, Opposition Critic for National Revenue, perhaps coincident with my latest email. It was a short conversation but he wanted to assure me of his support in my situation and his promise that he is on top of what FATCA is and will mean in collateral damage to many Canadians. I told him that I thought it was very, very irresponsible for MPs not fully educated on the consequences of FATCA and citizenship-based taxation to be telling their constituents that the IGA is a good deal for Canada and ‘they have nothing to worry about.’ Of course, I didn’t have enough time to continue all I wanted to say. I was encouraged to contact him by email or phone anytime in the future.
My email sending the link to this panel discussion resulted in one family member finally “getting it”. (My communication skills have not been as good as that of those of this panel! Mr. Richardson was an excellent facilitator. We’ve heard him in action even in NZ today! He needs to be cloned to prevent burn-out.)
As well, I got an email back from my Canadian Certified Accountant who will no longer take US clients (as, for the final straw that broke the camel’s back, she cannot justify to her clients the cost of the time it would take her to prepare the new FATCA 8938 for them. Why should she; she has plenty of “Canadian” clients without the headaches a ‘US Person’ will bring. Another indication of our toxicity.) She still prepares my Canadian tax returns — and I do my son’s online. Her reply to me was: “Paranoia breeds strength and action. A lot of people are able to feel but few have the strength or perseverance to act on their beliefs. I am proud and honored to be in your company and circle of friends.” I appreciated her recognition and backing of our fight.
A good “teaching tool” this video is. Thank you very much!!
John Richardson is quite a character. He knows all this stuff but pretends to not know. An example, 43.55 John pretends to have an OMG moment. This is second time in one day I have seen Petros for the first time.
