Ameri-Canada? TVO http://t.co/ZOKOsoFIDe – @DianeFrancis1 argues for Canada US Merger – Better than hostile #FATCA takeover of Canada?
— U.S. Citizen Abroad (@USCitizenAbroad) November 27, 2013
(Note the retweet.)
Diane Francis who is author of “Merger Of The Century” and an advocate of U.S. citizenship-based taxation argues that a Canada U.S. merger would benefit both countries. She is currently promoting her message through a series of media events. (She will be at the University of Toronto Rotman Business School on December 4, 2013.)
What is her message? What is her thinking? What is her rationale? The above tweet references a November 25, 2013 Steve Paikan interview on The Agenda.
The Agenda show is described as follows:
Author and journalist Diane Francis sees a mutually beneficial partnership between Canada and the United States. So beneficial, in fact, that she advocates for a merger of the two countries in her new book, “Merger of the Century: Why Canada and America Should Become One Country.” Diane Francis joins Steve Paikin for more.
The interview is well worth the 36 minutes it takes. The gist of Ms. Francis’s thinking is captured by Jonathan Kay of the National Post.
Jonathan Kay: @DianeFrancis1 plan to merge Canada and the United States has many, many problems http://t.co/yUb5wjqur4 via @fullcomment
— U.S. Citizen Abroad (@USCitizenAbroad) November 27, 2013
Mr. Kay’s comments on her book/merger may be broken into the following categories of comments:
It’s about the economy stupid
Example: The book is written like a business plan. In exchange for the takeover, every Canadian would receive a “U.S. takeover bonds”.
Canadian Sovereignty and the protection of resources
Example: Canada needs to protect it’s resources from China.
Cultural and historical differences and realities
Example: What would happen to the CFL? Would Canadian football still be played with three downs?
Strategic reasons for a merger
At a time when:
1. The Canadian banks (led by the Canadian Bankers Association moving towards full compliance with FATCA); and
2 The Canadian government (by assisting the Canadian banks by considering an IGA),
are surrendering Canada’s sovereignty to the United States, one wonders whether: a fire sale of Canada’s assets formal merger would be better than a surrender of Canada to the U.S. via FATCA.
According to Mr. Kay, Ms. Francis echoes this point by suggesting:
“If Canada is going to the the target of a creeping takeover from a big player, we may as well manage the process, instead of being victimized.”
Interestingly Ms. Francis is a huge advocate of U.S. citizenship-based taxation , a U.S. citizen and a believer in:
“Truth, justice and the American way!”

Francis is a blithering idiot and has no concept of human rights. She suggests that the US makes a lump sum payment to Canadians of $492,529 (why not an even half million? seems a bit pedantic to suggest such a sum). So the Federal Reserve just has to lend the US Treasury that amount and they cut a cheque for every Canadian. Easy money.
What sort of Canadian would suggest such nonsense? One who is really an American, only.
I cannot imagine how anyone could even remotely take this seriously.
I am going to the Rotman event this Wednesday and will read the book. One cannot start the Anti-Merger campaign early enough. This is even worse. than FATCA.
This is the “The American way”? I tell you what kind of “way”. No goddamn way!
This goes beyond being dumb and doesn’t merit further comment.
This Bozo thibnks money and giving Canada away. What will the US pay us in? Their money is worth less every day. The mere thought of any kind of American takeover is absurd. Is the US angry that Canada is doing business with China? Of course they are. They know they need and want our water and oil and all other resources. The main problem is, they will take it by force sooner or later. FATCA is their beginning, quite possibly a test to see how easy it can be. Remember.. “Manifest Destination”?
That reminds me of a stupid blond joke that actually happened in my social circles. Blond secretary was having an affair with the boss. The company was in big trouble and had debt over its head. One romantic evening the boss made a grand gesture of “generosity”. He told his secretary that he would gift her half of the company. She was all teary eyed and deeply touched. She never realized that she just took over half of the debt,
No offense meant to any blonds here- having been blond myself. But I dont think that Canada is that blindly enamoured with America to fall for the same gesture of “generosity”.
Is she getting paid by the US government to play head games with Canadians in hopes the sheeple will agree to a peaceful takeover? I feel sick just thinking about her proposals. USA can’t nuke us without destroying the natural resources they want from us, so they will FATCA us, and convince us its a good idea to surrender.
That’s a great way to explain Diane Francis’ merger scenarios, Polly.
Let us not realize too late that we’ve taken over half of the US debt. What would that mean for our 1/2 million USD each?
U.S. “currency” or “bonds” or whatever are useless streams of electronic digits which signify nothing. The U.S. of Arrogance would have to pay the merger bribe in gold bars (real gold, not the tungsten core variety) and they don’t have that much gold to give. (Germany can’t even get their own gold back which it foolishly stored on U.S. soil.) But supposing they did have the gold, would Canadians be dumb enough to take a gold bribe (more accurately depicted as 30 pieces of silver) and then run right into the arms of those who would simply find a way to confiscate it? (It’s been done before — Roosevelt.) Perhaps, but only if they aren’t informed about that dirty trick. Francis can take her ridiculous theories and go crawl back under a rock … and take her book with her.
Don’t worry. Quebec will never stand for it.
She wants us to accept U.S. bonds? Pardon me whilst I laugh uproariously. Good heavens!! Wonder if they have any old Confederate money stashed somewhere they’d like to pawn off on us? This is the sort of “deal” that is as good as the treaties that where made by the U.S. government with the Indian Nation tribes. Maybe we’ll all get to go on a long march such as Wounded Knee depicts next.
She needs to go home and hush up.
And thank god for Quebec!
Remember how the suggestion that the CRA and IRS merge fell on deaf ears?

This woman is a wacko! She is obviously not Canadian. Why is she saying “us?” She said she was raised as an American. I’m not Canadian but I know the planet needs Canada as Canada — not as CanUSA. The Americans will just take you over. “Wonderful integration,” she says. Don’t yield to this nut. US is obviously hurting economically. So now they’re eyeing Canada’s resources… (including Canadian citizens’s savings and labour to pledge for more debt, just like they’re doing with citizens here). She says you guys need help developing the Arctic. You’ll be plundered… So the USG is hitting you in every way. By force (FATCA) and by persuasion (you need help with economic and military development. Your currency is a problem; your border is a problem. Bla, bla, bla). Let’s do what the Germans did? Whaaaaaaaat? Canadians and Americans are not the same people. I agree with WhiteKat. She’s getting paid to spew this outrageous rubbish. Why do you allow her to reside amongst you… And why, oh why, do you give her a megaphone? She should be muzzled and extradited. Good gawd!
Wow! Diane Francis is quite the kook, isn’t she?
….and this goes without saying: NO DEAL!!
Of course the USA would love to ‘merge’ with Canada. This comment I found from someone called ‘serendipity’, made in response to an article on Diane’s book sums it up for me:
“I think people underestimate the patriotism of Canada because we aren’t big on flag-waving and singing the national anthem. We celebrate our war veterans but not the battles or the wars because we see those, at best, as necessary evils not something to be proud of. I am fiercely Canadian. There is no doubt in my mind that Canada is the best country in the world to be born into. Our land mass represents untold wealth for many centuries into the future. Having endless miles of untouched land is not a negative. It’s a treasure chest. Our fresh water alone is priceless. There is absolutely no reason for us to be in a hurry to allow the world to plunder our resources. We can develop our human capital as well as any other country in the world. Every square inch of the planet is polluted to some extent but comparatively speaking Canada is pristine.
Best possible future is that wealthy people decide to live in Canada and clean industries decide to settle here because we are relatively unpolluted and our percentage of land mass to population coupled with our northern position the planet means we have enormous advantage in dealing with climate change. While we too will experience negative effects we won’t have many areas hitting 140F. We will have more severe weather patterns but we may also increase our growing season and amount of arable land. Canada is beautifully positioned for the future.”
The Borg Queen has spoken.
Resistance is futile.
In the same article, Lark comments:
“Don’t let us to it to you, Canada. You are the world’s last great hope. We’ll screw you up so fast, please don’t let it happen. “
Serendipity and Lark are right. Canada is ‘the world’s last great hope’, but not if we allow USA to FATCA us!!!!!
And if Canadians, with no ‘US person’ connection at all, understood that FATCA is a step towards the annihilation of Canada, then there would be no FATCA, because ALL CANADIANS WOULD KNOW THAT THEY AND THEIR CHILDREN AND GRANDCHILDREN ARE DOOMED otherwise.
Our politicians and bankers are people too. Is this what they want for their children and grandchildren?
It’s interesting that she thinks that not developing Canada as a piece of real estate is “neglecting it”.
Apparently she’s not aware that of the fact that Mexico is part of North America when she said Mexico’s not ready to be included in what she would like called “The United States of North America”.
I suspect in the end, Canada would get the worst of both worlds if we were to merge with the US. I still call her “thought experiment” a “brain fart”. Go away Diane Francis. Go away, and stay away.
There will never be any Canadian/US merger without a significant change to the US Constitution – especially if it involves some new name. Getting 2/3rds of the states to agree would be almost impossible. This is not an idea that the “Red” states would be very keen about. It would be like before the Civil War where new states were admitted only if the North/South balance was maintained.
If individual Provinces want to apply for US statehood, they could, but they would then become US Citizens only. Their Canadian identity would be gone. This will not be a negotiable issue for the US. It will only be a take it or leave it choice.
Any West coasters interested in joining me in a FATCA protest in downtown Vancouver on Monday at 1pm?

@Bubblebustin,
Go for it!!! I think you will need a separate post for this in order to get the message out there quickly.
She is articulate but totally misguided. By this token, Northern Colorado and the Old South should form their own countries, just like Soviet Union was broken up (stop the analogies to Germany!). If you have ever hiked in west coast rainforests, Devil’s club is a nemesis. I was kermitzii.
