No two nations in the world are as integrated, economically and socially, as are the United States and Canada. Diane Francis builds both a strong political argument and a compelling business case, treating our two countries not only as sovereign entities but as merging companies.
Oh boy! Toronto Brockers are going to be VERY busy! I think we need to ‘STICKY’ this post along with the post on the Banks meeting Nov 13-14.
The only reasons for merging are for business efficiency, however the best and most important reason for not merging is our different social policies which have resulted in a healthier and happier people. The world needs successful alternatives to the US political, economic and social models.
Even communist countries have evolved their models to provide better social environments for people. The US insistence that it is the American way or the wrong way has created a country, with failing social policies that refuses to accept successful solutions for those failed policies.
@ WhiteKat,
Me too. The Calgary protest post should “unstick” on November 2nd, so this weekend would be a good time to stick up the next event/s. BTW, I don’t think anyone’s made a post yet for the Toronto Bank Conference protest. That and Diane Francis, which went up today, will automatically be on page 1 for a while.
Speaking of stickies, it’s appreciated that authors of sticky posts place the page break (“continue reading” arrow) fairly early in the text, especially when more than one post is stickied. So that people checking out the site can see that new articles are indeed being posted below it/them each day.
I appreciate you Canadians might not be too keen on the idea but union would solve all your extraterritorial US tax problems! 🙂
Johnson,
There will be more than a mere one million US Persons and their families (who will hope to find any way before a US / Canada merger) who will protest what Diane Francis proposes.
And may I be in heaven half an hour before the devil (US) knows I’m dead. I hope I never see the day of such a merger.
@Pacifica777,
Calgary411 already made a post about the Nov banker convention on FATCA. Actually, both posts re: protest opportunities are not obvious from their titles; maybe the titles need to be changed to draw more attention to them in addition to ‘stickying’ them after the Calgary protest.
@Calgary re: “And may I be in heaven half an hour before the devil (US) knows I’m dead. I hope I never see the day of such a merger.”
Do you mean like when Petty says: “You could stand me up at the gates of hell. But I won’t back down” ?
Johnson,
There is no way that Canada and the USA will merge. We are a social democracy,. We believe heath care is not for profit. We believe our water is not a commodity. We do not have the huge military industrial industry that the usa has, nor do we want it. We have resident based taxation , like the rest of the world, as opposed to citizen based taxation. We like this tax system, thank you.
The usa is a corporate and religious run country, serving for the profit of the one percent. We rejected the North America Union, one shared currency , and the USA ” too big to fail banking system”. The only thing the usa has going for it is warmer weather. We know we pay higher taxes than the usa but that is okay because we live longer, have a much lower infant mortality, lots of clean water, and much more. We Canadians feel we are all in this boat together. We are caring and kinder. While the usa is of the belief and actions of survival of the richest and stongest and meanest. With all the news headlines that the usa is in lately it would not be to our advantage to be a “partner” with the usa. The usa is not trusted anymore around the world.
CANADA I STAND ON GUARD FOR THEE! I would rather be dead than see this merger ever happen.
Well said, northernstar.
Yes, WhiteKat, you can also stand me up at the gates of hell and I won’t back down! (Anyway, I guess it’s where all my friends will be.)
@ all
Who is in?
I am. Have get my couches set up at my friends places.
Being as it is Toronto hopefully more people will join us.
I will not back down. Get music ready, get the signs ready. Balloons, anything legal that wiil attract attention. (It is a bit cold to go legally topless, LOL). Let’s Roll!
@Northernstar, I love your attitude! Too cold for topless though! Music and balloons sounds good. We can dance around to keep warm!
I am going to try to make it for at least one day, maybe even both days.
@ALL
TABLE OF 10 ABOUT $100 EACH. If we could just get inside , hmmm. As well as outside.
@Northernstar, ooops, I got the Diane Francis US/Canada merger protest confused with the bank protest. I can’t do both unforunately, and if I have to pick one it will definitely be to protest the banks. It would be great if we could have people at both protests though.
@ WhiteKat
I want to both. I have to drive down 6 hours I want to make the most of it.
@northernstar, I agree with you that it is very unlikely that the countries will merge. As much as the US might like to take over Canada, we are just too different here to accept a voluntary merger with them. Anyway, the practicalities of such a merger are almost insurmountable. Canada, the smaller country, would be expected to give up everything. What ‘merican would accept any foreign aspects (parliamentary system, gun control, metric system, monarchy, French as an official language, …) to the merger? They can’t even make their own country work as it is. How would they ever agree on and implement a merger with Canada? And what would be required legally for Canadians to accept such a merger? The Constitutions both here and there would have to be amended radically. What are the chances of that happening?
Personally, having left the US 45 years ago, there’s no way I would want to rejoin them now. If my CLN is good for anything, I hope it would prevent them from involuntarily claiming me back as part of a deal to merge. Anyway, I’m not worried that a merger might happen.
She’s just plain frightening. Think I’ll email her and say that due to her frightening ideas I’ll be dressing up in her likeness for Halloween.
Anyone that things Canada and the US should merge should be ashamed of themselves. People died to make this country what it is today. Why should be allow the financial cancer that is the United States to come northbound and rape us of our natural resources.
@AnonAnon
You listed other good reasons why we can’t merge. I came to Canada 44 years ago. I never desired to move back and I am looking forward to my CLN.
Atticus..funny…You doing an enlargement of her picture for a mask?
@Mach 73… I agree The US FATCA is a cancer. I want no part of it.
@canada brockers….echo n0rthern stars comments….. social democracy,.
heath care is not for HUUUUUUGGGEEE profit.
our water is not a vastly profitable commodity.
We do not have the huge military industrial complex
exists resident based taxation=RBT , like the rest of the CIVILISED OECD world,
The usa is a corporate and religious run country, USG= ” too big to fail banking system”.
The only thing the usa has going for it is warmer weather.this will change with global warming!
& We know we pay higher taxes in uk than the usa but that is okay
because we get greater bennies..in the UK like canada!!
much lower infant mortality per adjusted income per capita, ..lots of clean water,
public transport……………………………health care………..
reasonbly not corrupted police service…………….. non shut down government
a chance that gCHQ is not as secret as NSA…
THE QUEEN and the Royal Family…..god blessEm as they protect us from FATCA
and much more…..wish UK resident USPs would feel that………..uk/canada is caring/kinder
While the usa is of the belief and actions of survival of the richest and stongest and meanest
is the best. CANADA I STAND ON GUARD FOR THEE! google the “star strangled banner”….
repEAT……….love america. love americans. scared of dont like obama USG..
I was happy to say my oath to the Queen and never want Canada to remove that from our oath of citizenship. I’ve always had a very soft spot for Britain and it was my chance to become a part of a great tradition here in Canada. Also, I’ll take her years of experience with all she’s been through over Obama’s decision making any day. Some don’t care for her but, I like the old woman and think she has earned respect. I got to show my respect by saying my oath to her.
The U.S. is nothing at all at its heart similar to Canada or to Britain as Crystal London has pointed out in so many ways.
Yes, I think this idea of a merger is being brought forward by someone who knows the U.S. needs resources that Canada has. Other than that I can see zero benefit to Canada.
Maybe we should take up a collection to provide Diane Francis with a one-way, no-return-ever, ticket back to the US, the rock she crawled out from under. If Diane wants to merge with the US, no one is stopping her. I believe she’s a dual citizen; she can move back to that cesspit any time she wishes. Bye bye Diane; p*** off.
I would fight a Canada merger with the US with my dying breath.
Canada and the USA have a common origin. When we declared independence from England a third of our residents ran north and declared they wanted to stay English. That third were and are more European than we are and we’d love to send another third of our citizens up North. We have about 100 million drones who want the rest of the hive (USA0 to support them while they do what drones are born to do.(father more drones) Those who stayed here in 1776 had the hard work ethic and take nothing from government idea. We are still supporting the third we’d love to give you.
@Schubert
Maybe we can send that message at our protest when she has her speaking engagement. I am curious who would be going to hear her speak.
@Wilton Tidwell
That seems so kookie.
In the year 2000, a well-known Canadian journalist said to an American interviewer (on TV): “You’re our neighbour. We like you. But, we don’t want to be you.”
