The Globe and Mail reports that the players at the current G20, when not posturing about the coming US war on Syria, have agreed to share tax information.
Why?
Well, we know why. Tax cheats! They are everywhere.
One positive in the article is that it mentioned FATCA and the privacy concerns Canada has about it.

FACTA is inevitable look at those left wing government that has signed on. I would have had a lot higher opinion of Iceland if it said it was safe haven from US citizen based tax code. The Canadian government should clearly emphasize not only will not collect US taxes from Canadian citizen. Extradition of Canadian citizen for failing to file US taxes is off the table.
I really do not care that I can not go down to USA and even though I do regret not being able to invest invest USA equity I can happily leave without it.
@Pacifica, you were at Occupy over FATCA in Ottawa?? So, was I!! I went two days, I took them Tim Horton’s from the one up the street and handed out. Had lots of conversations about FATCA. Maybe I even saw you there.
@WhiteKat, if I come I will need to come by train from Kingston. I’d have to take a cab there from the train station. Let me check with hubby on this..Flagherty is speaking in the morning so it shouldn’t be a problem for me to get a train back that evening. I even think I have some points I can use for my ticket.

Making a FATCA IGA announcement in the parking lot of a trailer dealership could be clever misdirection; downplaying its importance while getting reduced media attention. But I don’t know if even a sharp operator like Flaherty would play it like that.
More likely, the announcement has something to do with supporting small family businesses (like the camping trailer business), the virtues of industriousness, import/export tariffs, support for domestic manufacturing, or even the Childrens’ Wish Foundation (the camping trailer business is a supporter).
But I could so easily be wrong! I thought FATCA would implode under a tidal wave of international hostility and resistance – like an anti-canary in a coal mine, chirping cheerfully as the miners pass out gasping…
@Wondering, I don’t think the announcement has anything to do with FATCA or an IGA but, if Flagherty knows we’ll show up and bring this up wherever he speaks that will make a difference. Who knows if we show up each time he speaks the press might pick it up.
Whatever the announcement is, it’s still an opportunity to get some attention. Harper would like this:

Reporters usually ask picketers “why” to add balance and color to a story.
Be prepared to be interviewed on camera.
