I don’t know about any of you but when I first heard about FATCA and IRS enforcement efforts against Americans abroad, my first reaction was to think that they were simply blissfully unaware of the consequences. Never attribute malevolence, I thought, to what can easily be explained by ignorance.

A second response to Barrie McKenna
Petros responds to Barrie McKenna’s comment at Isaac Brock.
Doing nothing about your IRS obligations is a viable option, as long as you know the risks. I’ve made that quite clear. What I’ve tried to do is offer a little of the very expensive CA advice — for free. Take it or leave it.

“I wish it need not have happened in my time,” said Frodo.
“So do I,” said Gandalf, “and so do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us.”

The clock is ticking on filing with the IRS by Barrie McKenna
Petros responds to Barrie McKenna’s new article. He asks Mr. McKenna to change his narrative from, “US taxpayer needing to come clean” to “Profligate government in United States bullies Canadian residents”.
The two big obstacles to compliance with IRS tax and reporting requirements
It occurs to me that there are two big obstacles for U.S. citizens living abroad who wish to comply with tax and reporting requirements.
The first obstacle is the cost. IRS tax and reporting requirements are too expensive for most people to manage.
The second obstacle is the confusing information and lack of clear guidelines from the IRS.

What One French Bank Has to Say about FATCA
I found this yesterday and thought it was interesting and worth sharing.
The Société Générale has an entire section of their Securities Services website devoted to FATCA. They are calling it the “défi américain” (the American challenge) and this seems to be an attempt to explain a few things to their clients who are clearly curious about what this all means. I think the site is well done and I hope my bank here does something similar.

Interesting Barrie McKenna article on "economic mobility" – citizenship-based taxation impedes economic mobility
but there is no mention of this in the article. Perhaps it would be worth a comment or two. Most of the comments/posts on isaacbrocksociety.com are focusing on the restrictions put on U.S. citizens who try to exercise “economic mobility” by living outside the United States. This McKenna article does not mention these and neither do the comments.
