Opportunity for Those in Alberta

For those in the Edmonton and Calgary areas, the Liberal leader, Justin Trudeau, is holding rallies next week. Free to attend but you need to request tickets in advance.

The man says he wants to hear from Canadians about what is important to them and what his party should focus on and stand for, and while at least one of his MP’s has questioned the sitting government on FATCA, the party hasn’t put forth an official stance as the Greens and the NDP have.

With the party set to hold its convention this coming February 20 – 23 in Montreal, any and all input should probably be made ahead of this gathering. Policy is on the agenda and if the Liberals can tackle legalizing prostitution and euthanasia, FATCA couldn’t be considered more controversial, could it?

Follow this link for more details on the rallies. There are two by-elections slated for Alberta soon, so we should be seeing a lot more of Mr. Trudeau.

BBC Article: Why I Gave Up US Citizenship

The BBC posted an article recently on the exodus of U.S. Citizens and asked readers to share their stories. A couple of different Brockers posted the link to the follow up on comment threads and one asked if it couldn’t be shared in a post, an excellent idea, so here it is.

The article contains the stories of those who came to the conclusion that being a dual citizen with the United States as one of those nationalities wasn’t workable.

Some specifically cite the burden and expense of tax compliance, but not everyone. And for most, the reasoning was far more complex.

I haven’t yet relinquished my citizenship but have plans to do so at the earliest opportunity and like most of the stories you will read at the BBC, my main reasons have nothing to do with “evading” taxes because I don’t owe any and being a relatively new ex-patriot, I don’t have much in my new home of Canada to report anyway. I was lucky enough to discover the pension and savings traps set by United States for its “off-shore” citizens and so have avoided them.

Wish I’d seen this sooner but Justin Trudeau is answering questions live this afternoon at 4 pm edt. You can log in and ask a question. Maybe about FATCA progress or what the government response might be in banks in Canada start shunning Canadians with dual US citizenship. Or anything else really.

On its 31st birthday Canadian Charter of Rights Defends Against FATCA

On Sunday Justin Trudeau became the newest leader of the Liberal Party of Canada. Canadians over the age of 55, who have been denied “Freedom 55” by accident of where they were born, remember the day Justin was born. Yes, he is the son of former Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau. Love him or hate him, Trudeau Senior made his mark on Canada. His legacy was the “Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms”. At the time the Charter was enacted, the focus was on “individual rights”. Interestingly, many opposed the Charter because they thought that to give Canadians individual rights would make the country too much like the United States. Most would agree, on balance that the Charter has been a good thing for Canada.
