@awol
Renunciants may or may not ever appear on the “name and shame list”, regardless of their financial situation or other criteria (e.g. covered expatriate vs. non-covered expatriate). Some names appear, others don’t, even if the situations are more or less identical. It’s purely arbitrary.
Does anybody know what happens after you file your last US Tax return & 8854?
Is there any acknowledgement from the IRS or State Dept that I am now completely free? The last 5 years have been a nightmare. Would love a piece of paper indicating that I am completely done (along with the CLN).
Could somebody provide the link for the list of people that have renounced/relinquished?
Thank you.
@ex-yankee – absolutely nothing. You’ll get no acknowledgement of any kind so don’t look for one. You’ll only hear from them if you owe them money.
Which list do you mean? The Consulate Report Directory is here:
http://isaacbrocksociety.ca/wp-content/uploads/2015/05/Consulate-Report-Directory-2015.05.h.pdf
and the Federal Register lists are here:

ex-yankee, You could try this
https://littleadvisor.wordpress.com/2014/01/18/great-new-service-from-the-irs-get-your-account-transcripts-online/
However, in view of the recent data leaks from the IRS, you might not have too much success.
@ex-yankee
While I understand you want some “closure,” I personally would not contact the IRS. “No news is good news” in this case.
If anyone in Canada has an appointment in the near future for renouncing, could you please contact me at
nobledreamer16 at gmail dot com Thanks!
@Brockers, riddle me this…..
___
8 USC 1481, (4) (A) accepting, serving in, or performing the duties of any office, post, or employment under the government of a foreign state or a political subdivision thereof, after attaining the age of eighteen years if he has or acquires the nationality of such foreign state; or
____
Lets assume a Canadian with clinging USC takes a job with the Province of Alberta at lets say 17.
In their fourth year at age 21 can they then take the position that henceforth when I start “performing the duties” of my employment next week it is my intent to voluntarily relinquish my USC.
Based on the plain wording I think YES, but I think a Consulate might be baffled.
I suppose you would need to prepare an official notice to your employer that commencing on _____ you are relinquishing your USness…..
Thoughts???
I have filed my last tax return, FBAR & 8854, and received my CLN. Am I now safe to open a tax-free savings account? Thoughts?
Thank you.
@ex-yankee – YES! You are no longer a US citizen so go ahead and do what you like as far as bank accounts, etc, are concerned.
@ ex-yankee –
Absolutely! Go for it (the TFSA and any other account that was taboo when you were a US Person)!
And congratulations!
@ex-yankee I had this same question, particularly in regards to my 19 year old daughter. She closed her TFSA (college fund) last year to make the reporting for the final year of returns cheaper (we had to pay for all that extra reporting this year). Now she is no longer a US citizen, but still needs to file final year for 2015. FBARS — different opinions on whether you report ALL bank accounts for the year or not, as it is annual filing. We decided “to hell with them”. We will make sure to keep her bank account itself under $10,000 and have opened the TFSA. As far as I’m concerned the bank account she already had as a US citizen is the only one they have any info on, and we ain’t telling them about anything done after she renounced. So next year, no FBAR reporting period! I have considered asking our banks if they can change our account numbers once this whole debacle is over. It really bothers me that all of our information is out there. YOU ARE FREE. DO WHAT YOU WANT 🙂
@ex-Yankee
Apparently you can make contributions for previous years too…
Oops, not “subsequent”, but previous years (my lysdexia kicking in).
My husband (relinquishment dated late 2013) was FATCA free this year — no 1040, no FBAR. It felt great to send off only Canadian tax forms BUT the FATCA fear remains and our confidence in the banking system is practically nil. Neither of us will venture into anything other than ordinary chequing and savings accounts — not even a CIC. The yellow light of caution we used to see flashing at the bank has changed to a red light of danger. This is due in part to the willingness of the banks to persuade the Canadian government to sign on the FATCA dotted line … all to save their hides and tan ours. It’s the betrayal factor I guess. The other factor is when (not if) will the banking ponzi scheme finally blow up? We don’t know and every “expert” sets a different date. Meanwhile we are spending down our accounts (back to building the rest of our house) and acclimatizing ourselves to living on less than the less we have always lived on. We are steeling ourselves against the possibility of a plague of bank “bail-ins” and the day we might hear our bank teller say, “And it’s gone.”
Embee,
Can I email with you offline. Mods, if this is okay with Embee, feel free to give her my email address.
Cheers,
Rocky
@ Rocky and Admin
Okay with me. I’m not great at checking my e-mail box faithfully but I’ll try to do better.
Done, Rocky and EmBee.
I’ve been away for most of this day and see I have a lot to catch up with.
This is just a test to see how to get something posted here. I tried with a different username and email address but my post did not appear and when I tried it a 2nd time the page said the post was a duplicate. And there is no indication whether a post must be approved before being posted.
I appeared at a US consulate and applied for a CLN in 2014. Though it has been a while, I have not heard yet about the status of my CLN application. I have resided outside the US for many years and due to insufficient/no income (utterly indigent) have not been required to file tax returns. So now, no later than 15 June, 2015 (3 days from now), I understand I must file 8854 but not 1040 or 1040NR due to the same lack of income. I have 3 QUESTIONS BELOW. Please answer any that you are able to if you are certain of your answer. Thanks.
======================================================
The top of page 1 of form 8854 (2014 version) states:
“For calendar year 2014 or other tax year beginning ______, 2014, and ending ________, 20__”
Q1. Should I just not fill in the blanks or WHAT DATES should I enter in these blanks ???
===========================================================
Page 1 of the 10 pages of IRS instructions for 8854 say: “For purposes of filling out Part I, the date of your expatriation is the LATER of the date you notified the relevant agency of your expatriating act or the date Form 8854 was first filed in accordance with these instructions.”
But the version of form 8854 that I got from the IRS website a couple days ago is for 2014. There is no option on the form that includes any date in 2015 and I am filing form 8854 now, in June 2105.
Q2. Is there a 2015 version of this form somewhere ???
The latest date option is January 1, 2014 – December 31, 2014 – which is directed to complete Parts IV and V of the form.
Q3. Do I chose this option IF the 2014 version of the form is the latest ???

I would sincerely appreciate answers to these 3 QUESTIONS ASAP as time is very short.
@ Testing,
I found your comments. They got caught by the spam filter. Sorry about that. I have no clue why that happened — it shouldn’t have, but it has happened a couple of other times. Since the two comments are the same, I just put one of them on the thread.
Welcome to Brock and I hope your future postings go smoothly — they should!
Still having trouble. Got my “This is just a …” post up but my long post with 3 questions does not appear. What to do?
@ Testing,
Re your last comment (12:11 pm), I think we were both posting at the same time. Do you see your 3-question post now? It should be the third one up from this one.
Hi Pacifica7777
Glad and very relieved to be in contact with you. You and I chatted by skype and exchanged emails about my situation about a year ago. I have recently sent you several emails with questions and have asked to speak with you on skype but have not heard from you. My email address starts with “firm……..” and ends with “……stinbox.com. Can we communicate privately for a brief time asap? My skype name starts with “co” and ends with “lm.” You are still in my contacts and I have left messages for you on skype over the past few days. You are the most knowledegable person and were quite helpful and nice when we communicated several times a year or so ago.
Hi, I remember you. Sad to hear it is taking so long. I just checked my g-mail and I see your e-mails. Recently, I usually use the e-mail pacifica at isaacbrocksociety dot ca, and only check the g-mail about twice a week. So, I just looked there now. I’ll read your e-mails now and I’ll be back in touch this afternoon and, sure, we can chat on skype.
Thanks for remembering me. Yeah, it has been forever and I will be glad to speak with you on skype later. I am logged on now and will be here.
