EmBee suggested that it would be good if there was a thread for new articles, so that people would be aware of where to comment. So, I created this permanent page. You could mention such articles in the comment stream for this page, or if I see one on another thread, I can copy the link to here. I’ll keep adding to the list, but not deleting, so we’ll end up having sort of a “bibliography” too. [Note: Some articles are not open for comments]
For more articles on FATCA, enter FATCA into Google then click on the link “more news for fatca” just below the most recent featured article.
Note also: JC suggests to see #FATCA on Twitter for latest breaking news. JC finds that is quite a good source and there even are some international articles that one may read using Google Translate.” Others may help certain tweets and articles remain in elevated position by retweeting them.

@ Orwell and LM
Maybe Blaze/Lynne has something in her already published articles that could be rejigged a bit to appeal to EPW. Have you been over to the Sandbox to ask her? How I wish we still had our awesome Arrow to help us out. Badger could do a dynamite, well researched piece … if we could persuade her. Everything India needs to know right now was articulated in so many submissions made to finance committees and such before Harper opened our sovereignty gates and welcomed the FATCA monster to Canada. I can certainly see how valuable it would be to get India better informed about what lies ahead. I’ve read a few opinions about PM Modi that make me think he’s pretty bright but of course what we’d like to know is how bendy his knees are when it comes to that visit by Obama who will no doubt be bringing a FATCA hammer with him.
@Charl
I cannot figure how to attach a reply to a specific comment either.
@EmBee
Problem for India… they are on the hunt for *black money* which is untaxed held by their citizens… I think their gov’t made a promise to bring all of it back from outside of India to win an election or something… India don’t seem to realize… they won’t get all this juicy info… they are only hurting themselves.. because their non-resident-indians (NRI) who actually support their economy won’t be able to do that anymore… lets get real… if u have large of amounts of *black money* wouldn’t u have a corp or something… not in a bank or investment in your own name
@ Charl
RE: the WSJ article entitled “A Clumsy Law Makes U.S. Expats Financial Lepers”
Bill Wald comments: “Without US military protection Canada would have been swallowed by the USSR.”
I can’t sign in there (no Facebook, no Google+) but if I could I would reply: Actually Canada now could use USSR military protection to keep it from being swallowed by the USA. FATCA is just one of many bites the USA has taken out of Canada’s sovereignty.
@ USFP
Right on! India will get no reciprocity from the USA. If Modi gives Obama a butt kiss, India will still get bupkis out of a FATCA IGA.
Read the LA Times piece. Interesting and I don’t dismiss the argument completely but it’s an antiquated idea that rests on the basis that people are serfs basically whose main loyalty is to a state or leader rather than themselves, their families, religions, etc. It’s anti-freedom too because if we were really “free” (we aren’t by the way), we would be able to move anywhere on the planet and take up or leave citizenships as it suited our personal beliefs and needs.
The truth is – we are the property of whatever country claims us as citizens. We haven’t evolved much from our feudal roots though we appear to be a tad bit beyond outright slavery though that depends on where you live, I suppose.
It’s unlikely that we will ever get our govt officials to see us differently. Their interests are not served by our autonomy and that’s why the status quo rules.
EmBee Neither Tricia or I can figure out how to reply to specific comments there…..grrrrrr. Anyone know?

Why don’t you quote……unquote the comment you want to refer to and then right below that, give your own comment to the comment. That way, it will stay in the stream of new comments. Many of my comments were buried by replying to other comments — or commenting too late and most of the commenters are gone.
Thanks for this link, Publius. It is encouraging to see a country doing its required due diligence before signing away the rights of its own people. I’ve put in a comment, awaiting moderation.
@EmBee Regarding the need for USSR style military protection, to save us from US bullying…surely you jest! Are you forgetting 70 years of one of the cruelest regimes in history? The starvation of Ukranians ? The ruination of eastern Europe’s economies over a generation? The gulags? Maybe I should lighten up, but the hyperbole on this site can get a bit out of control. By the way, the Russians had Alaska but were too dumb to know what they had and for most of the sad history of the USSR did not know the value of Canada’s resources, so why would they annex this great white north? I suppose Vlad the Shirtless could try but he’s a little preoccupied with the tanking ruble.
@ Lake Superior Guy
One simply gets tired of the ridiculous meme that a country that goes arounds smashing other countries is a great “protector”. So, no, not jesting … very much.
How refreshing this journalist in India has a few questions and concerns about FATCA
jayshree @jaysh88 I sent him a Twitter Tweet with link to the IBS India FATCA IGA page.

You can open a FB account with a pseudonym. Be Jimmy Jones for all anyone cares. How many opportunities do we have to speak directly to a U.S. political party that actually responds to us?
We have to shame RO into doing what is right and on our time frame. They keep making blah blah about the 2016 election. We can’t wait that long!!!!!!
IRS Hikes Offshore Account Penalty To 50% For Bank Leumi, Sovereign, 10 Others
Here is the angle, if the US sees justification for this, then why not lower penalties for certain nontax haven and relatively high tax countries, and also great reduction if you are tax resident in said country.

Found this article that is an interesting read….

@JC
FATCA is a complete departure from reality when it treats every nation as a tax haven and every citizen with an offshore account as an offshore tax evader. However, in the US’s contortions to make it a reality, they’ll probably throw a bunch more scant resources at it until they eventually cut and run, as per their history of previous reality departures.

Now the BS is being repeated uncritically in Aljazeera;

And they CHOOSE not to quote any other reputable sources or get real quotes and facts from expats themselves.
These stories seem like cookie cutter copies of each other – down to the wording. Somebody should run the articles through Turnitin, since they’d get an F for lack of facts, and an F for plagiarizing each other.
Is it the US Treasury and State department planting this BS propaganda?
I’m eager to see the latest figures for the Name and Shame list, and the total for 2014, as well as the Taxpayer Advocate annual report to Congress which should come out in early January.
Can an ISB Admin please fix link at the top for the Biz Standard reference on 2014.12.29?
It’s linking to an unknown Bloomberg page. The correct link should be:

@Orwell,
Fixed. Thank you.

There has been a lot of activity lately on FB. There are tremendous opportunities to dialogue with Republicans Overseas, how often do we get this chance? The RNC will be having its Winter meeting in January to discuss the GOP national platform. We need to be hitting RO hard now as they are starting to waver in their time frame . Please join FB under any name you desire and comment here: https://www.facebook.com/republicansoverseas/posts/330267830490352 You will find the exchange with RO fascinating, their feet need to be held to the fire.
@Charl
I was over at the page…. did u read the statement by one of the Republicans…. Democrats have no interest to help nor will they help to fix the issue when they were in I think France… they don’t want to look like they are helping tax evading… that is why I see that the Republicans have started to step away from the issue…. Now they are saying…. its very expensive to do the lawsuit in the US…. If Republicans were really interested in helping… money would have been raised quite quickly…. I see the Chamber of Commerce are helping people to deal with Fatca… all the ones who said they would help seemed to have stepped aside…. they pandered to get the Republican votes… now they are saying… now that we are elected… we will deal with it in 2017…. it will be too late for all of us…
@ US_Foreign_Person I agree with you, they do seem to be backing off. There are more issues to FATCA than catching the “Fat Cats”. and tax evaders. Do the Republicans really think they cannot use other arguments to justify their position? How about Human Rights violations? Very disappointing. Both the Democrats and the Republicans want tax reform but I am not sure what they have in mind will help any of us. Many commentors wanting action now. I don’t think people like me, caught with a US birthplace and wanting out, can expect any sympathy from the Republicans, they are after votes.
