Media and Blog Articles – Part 1 of 11 (to 26 May 2015)
You can access all years at this link:

EmBee suggested that it would be good if there was a thread for new articles, so that people would be aware of where to comment. So, I created this permanent page. You could mention such articles in the comment stream for this page, or if I see one on another thread, I can copy the link to here. I’ll keep adding to the list, but not deleting, so we’ll end up having sort of a “bibliography” too. [Note: Some articles are not open for comments]
For more articles on FATCA, enter FATCA into Google then click on the link “more news for fatca” just below the most recent featured article.
Note also: JC suggests to see #FATCA on Twitter for latest breaking news. JC finds that is quite a good source and there even are some international articles that one may read using Google Translate.” Others may help certain tweets and articles remain in elevated position by retweeting them.

2014.12.11 – Saw this ugly one in politico.com a rather left-leaning online-rag. Going on and on about tax cheats, etc and crying about the GOP cutting the IRS.

@Stephen Kish,
Are you going to talk about the Jim Bopp conference call. Nothing much in there for me.
It’s very clear the Republicans feel this is a significant source of votes for them in 2016. Reince Priebus spent about half an hour talking about this. I could have done without this but it’s a clear sign they are motivated. I think that’s a good thing though.
Jim Bopp talked about the legal attack. They think once they get the money together they can cripple the law in about 30 days (presumably with an injunction). They want to cripple both FATCA and FBAR. They want to attack the treaties (IGA’s) on the grounds that haven’t been put in place correctly and that they affect banks with assets under $150M that are exempt under FATCA(this was news to me).
They don’t see a constitutional attack on CBT (citizenship based taxation) currently. Less of an issue for people like me than Americans abroad though galling in its effect on GC holders).
They are trying to get the challenge charity status so the 2014 contributions are tax deductible. They are about half way in their funding.
Of course they want some more of my cash!
And I gave them another $1k.
@Anon
She had a strike against her… her gender… India is suppose to be modern & such… it was a big show at the beginning as usual then it got swept away… she stupidly just made herself & her family a tax target…
having some fun over here at http://money.cnn.com/2014/12/10/pf/taxes/expat-passport-citizenship-renounce/index.html

@mettleman
Are you and I dancing together over there?
I am enjoying considerably Nancy Pelosi saying that Democrats are being blackmailed by Republicans.

@ charl
i am the one that left in 1966
pretty fun eh?
but definatly some people that really miss the point
@mettleman
I don’t think Scott W likes you! (Or me either) Man I wish I could say it was fun….right about now I want to stick needles in my eyes! Notice how when you pose a difficult question no one answers? I have asked three times for anyone to justify CBT and have had zip response. They ALL just keep saying the SAME thing no matter how many times you explain that we are not all wealthy tax cheats! Grrrrr
@ charl
i don’t think Scott W likes anybody who points out how unfair and out of touch with the world their system is
@Charl
It is simply high way robbery made legal. Who would vote down a law which lets you legally spend other people`s money? And just like the homeland police are now confiscating lose cash in anyone they stop on the highway – they are doing the same with expats. Anything goes!
Charl and mettleman,
You will never get through to the likes of Scott W (he is determined not to make that happen) — but others are reading.
@ Charl and mettleman Just had a look at all the comments. It is so disappointing to hear so many people repeating the “you get benefits”, yet no one names them. US citizenship is a noose for many of us and FATCA will try to kick the chair out from under us. I really don’t think a lot of them understand that we pay taxes in the countries we live in. All they hear is offshore accounts and their minds go elsewhere. Good for you both to attempt to educate them, sometimes a few listen.
@heartsick
Problem is that they see the words *tax evading* & *off-shore* they all think we pay no taxes & we are rich which is far from reality… its amazing alot of homelanders don’t understand that there are other cultures… even in Montreal when visitors come… u hear them complain about how stupid it is that everything is in french & people don’t speak english… hmm… maybe cause u are in Quebec where the 1st language is French… btw… if u speak louder to a foreigner… doesn’t make them speak english.. it just annoys them
i realize that the ones that don’t want to hear what i have to say will never listen.
i kinda looked at it that if i can sway even one person to stop and look a bit further into the issue it was worth it.
besides it is kinda fun to get homelanders worked up over something like this because they have no idea what they are talking about and end up running around in circles frothing at the mouth like a child having a temper tantrum and end up looking like a certain part of a horse. 🙂
@ US_Foreign_Person mettleman Some people in the US live in a bubble. I don’t know if they are just regurgitating what they have learned in school or just want to wear blinders. As frustrating as it can be, even if the conversation opens one person’s eyes, the conversation is worth it. Some in the US find it unbelievable that we are taxed by the US on anything earned in our countries, they just assumed it was only on US income, they are the intuitive ones. It’s hard to believe that they think we are not taxed in our own countries. Do they not think we have roads, schools, services etc. or do they think they are the only ones that have these things?
So true, mettleman, but unfortunately no matter how stupid they look, they can still vote – and every renunciation is one less vote for us.
@heartsick
I read a comment somewhere in reference to the FEIE, saying that they (the homelander) wished they could have an exemption from taxes too. No acknowledgment of taxes paid elsewhere whatsoever! Also, at one point a commenter here on Brock said that someone they knew in the US was surprised that we pay taxes here in Canada. I can only assume that their perception is that as a socialist, aka communist country we must use a different system. (shaking head)
@ Bubblebustin I think that exemption on earned income for US taxes paid for those abroad causes a great deal of confusion in the minds of homelanders. Exemption = no taxes. I have seen commentors try to explain the fact that we pay taxes in our own countries. I think homelanders think the US dictates the exemption for our country’s taxes as well.
@heartsick @Bubblebustin
I spoke to someone who actually said my family pays no taxes because the earned income is so high… so we make out like a bandit. Some of my family members are retired… in reality there is no actual income being earned… btw… u know that some homelanders seem to think Canada has snow all yr round… some idiot asked me… how much snow did I get in July… he was serious… I said.. it was a tundra… yep… I have warped humour…. so if u run into a guy who thinks we have to wait for the mooses to dig us out… its my fault… lol…
Maybe in their minds, the only taxes that count are US ones.
@ US_Foreign_Person Yep, they live in a bubble. About the weather, to be fair, here in Calgary I think we have had snow in every month of the year, just not in the same year. And in the summer months it doesn’t stay. We had a terrible snowstorm here in September, ruined a large number of the trees in the city because the snow was so heavy it broke the tree branches and split tree trunks.
“We finally have an idea of how much money Burger King will save by moving to Canada”
http://wapo.st/1Dh6W1W
Why is it that a respected newspaper such as Wapo does not have sufficient insight to understand that it’s not about tax rates, but rather territorial versus worldwide taxation of earnings. Full-stop.
Roberto A. Ferdman has published yet another article in Wapo on Burger King which has some interesting comments. I encourage Brockers to set the record straight. Maybe not in the comments section, but through a more formal “letter to the editor”?
Instructions for letter writing here:
http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/ask-the-post/post/how-to-send-a-letter-to-the-editor/2011/11/17/gIQAoi7IlN_blog.html
could be re-titled as:
“We finally have an idea how much Uncle Sam earns through taxing overseas economic activities”
BTW, as we saw last week with the NTY op-ed, I encourage IBS to consider Oped submissions over mere comments-adding. Here are instructions for doing so with Wapo:
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/opinions/op-ed/submit/
The nice thing about Wapo is that it’s hand-delivered to readers within the beltway.
Finally a word about Roberto A. Ferdman’s bio:
“… a reporter for Wonkblog covering food, economics, immigration and other things. … He’s half Argentine, half Iranian, was born in Boston, but raised in Puerto Rico.” — you’d think he would have the credentials to get this story right!
PS.

IBS Admins – maybe worthy of a separate post to “set the record straight”?
@NotthatTara
Whats the use? As long as they dont GET IT – that they need to reform their tax system – we will never reach them because our words fall on deaf ears. They are holding on to CBT as if they are drowning and CBT could save them. Instead, CBT is the weight which is pulling them under.
