Media and Blog Articles – Part 1 of 11 (to 26 May 2015)

EmBee suggested that it would be good if there was a thread for new articles, so that people would be aware of where to comment. So, I created this permanent page. You could mention such articles in the comment stream for this page, or if I see one on another thread, I can copy the link to here. I’ll keep adding to the list, but not deleting, so we’ll end up having sort of a “bibliography” too. [Note: Some articles are not open for comments]
For more articles on FATCA, enter FATCA into Google then click on the link “more news for fatca” just below the most recent featured article.
Note also: JC suggests to see #FATCA on Twitter for latest breaking news. JC finds that is quite a good source and there even are some international articles that one may read using Google Translate.” Others may help certain tweets and articles remain in elevated position by retweeting them.

That’s a great question, Calgary. From what I’ve seen, I’d say there’s no limit. The effort here would be to emphasize the corrupt means by which the US government has strong-armed the foreign banks and governments to join their coalition of the unwilling. Who’s more likely to lobby for FACTA’s survival if it looks as though it’s going to go off the rails – the compliance industry or the banks, lol? I wonder if the compliance industry would even DARE?
@Calgary
It ends up being corruption within anti-corruption!
@ LM
Your Kijiji campaign is a good idea. Ideas get submerged here at Brock sometimes but please keep bringing this one to the surface because I’d like to see it latch on to Kijiji-philes who inhabit this site.
@EmBee – Thanks for your encouragement RE Kijiji ads. Are you living outside Ontario? Would you be willing to post in your area?
I hope a few Brockers will pick up on the idea of placing Kijiji ads – – it costs nothing other than a little bit of time; these ads can be easily reposted (again, cost free). With the new SPAM rules from CRTC, the option of sending lots of emails to famous-folk in Canada who have US connection seems no longer a reasonable option; so how do we inform others? If a person makes contact with IBS or ADCS after this, then more information (including emails) can be offered, but first things first.
So, if there is anyone out there who would be willing to Kijiji outside of Ontario, let me know. If I get no response, I’ll try here again after this holiday Thanksgiving weekend…… May we all give thanks for what we have, even if it is not perfect. 🙂
No comments but interesting:

Change from model 2 to model 1.
@Neill
I wonder what that is about? I have heard that some people from New York successfully sued in swiss courts so that their information cannot be handed over to America because of swiss privacy laws. Maybe they want to bypass those somehow?
@ LM
Mr. EmBee said he’d give Kijiji a go here in Alberta. He’ll “borrow” from your template. Nothing ventured, nothing gained. If it gets even one donation to ADCS it will be worth it. Have a Happy Thanksgiving! 🙂
EmBee,
Great that Mr. EmBee is taking this on. It was on my to-do list and not yet done. Let me know how he makes out and where he posts in AB.
I send a dozen cyber-hugs to Mr. EmBee in appreciation for his heart-warming efforts. I’m sure we all will be interested to hear how many “visits” you get over a week’s time. If you want to have me send the jpegs, I give permission for IBS administrator to forward my email address to you.
Happy Thanksgiving to you too!
@ LM
Thanks for the jpegs. I’ll watch my e-mail box and pass your address along to him. It might be a few days before he gets going on this.
Swiss Change from model 2 to model 1
http://www.tax-news.com/news/Switzerland_Commits_To_Automatic_Tax_Information_Exchange____66070.html
It look like the Swiss are taking the high road in regards to tax evasion. Their looking to level the playing field with full reciprocity and their bringing 40 of their friends with them.
Is this, perhaps, a way to force the US into full reciprocity which they won’t be able or willing to do?
@GwEvil
That’s what I was thinking. Just think if the Swiss and their 40 friends (I assume mostly from the EU) threaten a 30% with holding on all transfers to US banks if they do not comply.
@worldwide heheh! >:)
Here’s an opportunity to meet Glenn Greenwald and network with other serious and curious journalists:
Glenn Greenwald will be presenting in Toronto on Oct 21, hosted by the Canadian Journalism Foundation. 7:00 pm at Glenn Gould Studio, CBC (Front Street across from Metro Convention Centre).
A reception will follow. Maybe a good opportunity to pitch your own stories to journalists…
Tickets are $40 and include Greenwald’s new book.
See: http://www.cjf-fjc.ca/j-talks/glenn-greenwald-conversation-david-walmsley
“Open source hero or every government’s worst nightmare? Glenn Greenwald has championed making secret documents part of the daily news. Working with Edward Snowden to publish NSA secrets, Greenwald is a Pulitzer Prize-winner, lawyer and co-founding editor of The Intercept. He speaks with David Walmsley, editor-in-chief of The Globe and Mail, about power, secrecy and journalism’s role in an era of digital openness.
Each ticket includes a hardcover copy of Glenn Greenwald’s latest book No Place to Hide: Edward Snowden, the NSA, and the U.S. Surveillance State and entry to the reception with our speakers at 8:30 p.m.”
Thanks for the head’s up, Wondering. Maybe Mr Greenwald will put the pants back on all the people Hillary managed to charm off during her recent speech in Ottawa (be prepared to get wet with all the slobbering admiration this CBC contributor/Globe columnist/pollster has for her):
“She conveyed a deep knowledge about the state of the world today. She described the myriad current risks in a way that could have left people feeling more unsettled, but actually seemed to have the opposite effect: here was someone who saw not only threats, but opportunities, who grasped the big picture and wasn’t losing their cool.”

@ Bubblebustin
My sentiments exactly!
Canadians – especially the Liberal Party – need to realize that current ruling Democratic cabal is not benign – and that emulating the Obama campaign will not play to many Canadians with so-called “US-person-hood”.
Chris Hedges wrote this about Obama in 2009; a seminal article that be applied to “Buying Brand Clinton” today:
“BUYING BRAND OBAMA”
“Barack Obama is a brand. And the Obama brand is designed to make us feel good about our government while corporate overlords loot the Treasury, our elected officials continue to have their palms greased by armies of corporate lobbyists, our corporate media diverts us with gossip and trivia and our imperial wars expand in the Middle East. Brand Obama is about being happy consumers. We are entertained. We feel hopeful….
“But like all branded products spun out from the manipulative world of corporate advertising, we are being duped into doing and supporting a lot of things that are not in our interest.”

As the ‘green card means taxes even if expired’ story does the rounds we have some stats on how many gave them up here:

@JC
The IRS is lowering the hammer on so called snowbirds, but a snowbird remains a snowbird regardless of how long he’s been in the US unless he neglects to file in a timely fashion both the closer connection” form 8840, or failing that, the “tie-breaker” election under the tax treaty. Snowbirds who are meeting the conditions of the substantial presence test are getting penalized for not knowing about the forms in time! This hardly seems fair for the snowbird that the difference between a taxpayer and a snowbird is knowing about a piece of paper, when non-resident US person’s are getting a pass not knowing about their tax filing obligations.
What this tells me is that the IRS is putting a lot of emphasis on residency. This is terrible for snowbirds who get caught in this, knowing that The CRA under the same circumstances would not penalize a Canadian resident in this fashion if they made a good faith effort to be tax compliant with offshore accounts. What an opportunistic tax and penalty grab this is. The US is really going to shoot themselves in the foot with this one.
Be the first to comment on: Sweeping U.S. tax crackdown inflicts heavy collateral damage

@Wondering
A few Brockers know that I’ve been working with others trying to get the Liberal Party to come up with a policy statement on the FATCA IGA. I’ve been in communication and have met with my riding’s Liberal candidate who’s forwarded our suggestions to the powers that be. Unfortunately, I don’t feel a great deal optimism that they get it when the Liberal party fawns all over Hilary. This candidate I refer to gets it, and told me that she’s now meeting all kinds of people who will be negatively affected by US taxation and the IGA, and is grateful to me for informing her of the situation, but have I made it sufficiently clear to her that the Liberal Party is doing these people a disservice by supporting the Democrats and not coming out against the Democrat and Conservative’s FATCA IGA? I don’t know.
Here’s a new article and it’s in a major news medium:

There is a new blog asking for posting of FATCA/FBAR stories. One story so far. It would be nice if Republicans Abroad, ACA, and AARO posted stories.
