Media and Blog Articles – Part 1 of 11 (to 26 May 2015)

EmBee suggested that it would be good if there was a thread for new articles, so that people would be aware of where to comment. So, I created this permanent page. You could mention such articles in the comment stream for this page, or if I see one on another thread, I can copy the link to here. I’ll keep adding to the list, but not deleting, so we’ll end up having sort of a “bibliography” too. [Note: Some articles are not open for comments]
For more articles on FATCA, enter FATCA into Google then click on the link “more news for fatca” just below the most recent featured article.
Note also: JC suggests to see #FATCA on Twitter for latest breaking news. JC finds that is quite a good source and there even are some international articles that one may read using Google Translate.” Others may help certain tweets and articles remain in elevated position by retweeting them.

Top rated comment (by far so far) following this article in NYT about upcoming Scottish vote.
It is at http://www.nytimes.com/2014/09/11/world/europe/separatists-around-the-world-draw-inspiration-from-scotland.html. Go Canada! (I see the guy from CT does not know about Tofino nor the beaches around Vancouver).

I’m for Texas leaving. In fact all the red states can go. Or better, all the blue states along the east and west coast should break away and join Canada. We get a sane government and health care. Canada gets some really cool cities and beaches they can actually use. And the rest of the U.S. is free to wave the flag and form whatever kind of bible-thumping gun-toting society they want.
@JC
Oh yeah- the leading questions!
But you hit the nail on the head with all the “donations” which make tax reform impossible.
This sounds like mainstream US news:

Kevyn Nightingale picked an indefensible title for his article then tries to defend it. Yet somehow he attracted some pity responses.
One comment raises this issue: is FATCA a violation of the terms of NAFTA. ? I am still working on my international trade law degree, but it appears to me a worthy topic for an IBS feature. Also, how about WTO?

@JC
Good it’s going mainstream with it being more or less properly framed, but in an effort to keep my BP low today, I’m not going to read the comments by people who only read the headlines (I’ve always thought that commenters should take a quiz that proves you’ve read the article before they are allowed to comment).
They spelled it FACTA – even after writing what FATCA is an acronym for. Anyone googling it will get a different law!
@Bubble
Don’t be afraid. Marilyn, as the author of the “Dear Mr President” letter fame posted all of the stuff from the Woods article. Scroll towards the bottom of the comments. She was a rock star!!!!!
RE: http://www.mnp.ca/en/media-centre/blog/2014/9/5/fatca-is-not-your-enemy
Kevyn Nightingale sure ain’t no Florence, is he. He prefers bombs to balms. And FATCA is just that — a bomb tossed into every country outside the privileged place call the USA, designed to blow up competitive and weaker economies alike, no matter how much US citizen/person collateral damage occurs. There’s a reason that economic sanctions, which is what the 30% withholding threat amounts to, are considered to be an act of war.
It would be really nice if folks could mosey over to the article JC posted and up vote Marilyn’s post: http://www.nbcnews.com/business/economy/tax-rules-prodding-many-americans-ditch-citizenship-n199866
@ charl
I tried but I must have flubbed the sign up procedure. It says I’m signed in but my comment doesn’t go up and my “up vote” doesn’t work either. Do you have to fill in that Newsvine thing to actually gain admission? I already provided them with e-mail address, screen name and password but I don’t like providing zip code, age and gender information.
@Em
That’s how I did it. No problem providing the zip/age/gender ……what is your favourite number? got an age you’d rather be? always wished you could have been a dude? We have got to try and get Marilyn up to the top of the page!
@ charl
Thanks! Will try again later.

U.S. expats find themselves in a “no-man’s land” of financial services: http://on.wsj.com/1pU5x4o
You’re really on it, JC! Thanks. This one isn’t pay-walled:

@Bubblebustin I surf Twitter. Sometimes good for latest breaking news. Patricia Moon tweets as does Lynn Swanson. US Citizen Abroad, and other Brockers using different names here are tweeters. ADCS and IBS tweet articles.
I follow them too, and you just recently started following me, that’s if you are who I believe you are 😉
My twitter activity is somewhat sporadic, but I’ve been known to participate in the occasional “twitter blast” with others.
Wow. The WSJ shows a lot more problems than I knew about. Looks really bad. State department said the accounts were closed in error and Robert Stack says the problems are all a myth! Yep, that looks right to me.
@Charl
I don’t see the comments.
@Tricia
Seems WSJ requires “real names” and suspect mine wasn’t. If I can send in a scanned copy of a government ID that that is my real name they will reinstate my posts. Aren’t they the fussy ones huh. They believe this requirement will elevate the dialogue. I don’t know if I can rebut this with the moderator re the need to be anonymous with issues such as this one and how this issue is also inhibiting free speech for fear of the IRS. I don’t have solid footing here as I don’t have a WSJ account and I’d probably just be talking to myself anyway.
Article in WP about USG forcing Yahoo to give up personal data by fining $250,000 daily.

A good idea would be some sort of ‘Chinese Democracy Wall’ of letters from Americans abroad on how the USG impacts them.
@Charl I’ll read your post and so will lots others. Is WhiteKat back from holiday?
@JC…ya, we have to rustle that WhiteKat out of her kitty nap! Sure do miss her. I hope her holiday isn’t so much fun she doesn’t miss us! After she did so much hard slogging she should wallow in some of the good stuff coming our way lately. (Certainly not all, but there seem to be many more comments supporting us these days. Do you agree or is it just my imagination. I haven’t seen Mr Hunter in awhile.)
I would like to share one of the comments left on the CNBC article that really gave me a chuckle….finally as there isn’t much “funny” stuff happening out there in the trenches. In response to the usual benefits of US citizenship/black op helicopter argument:
“Largest numbers renouncing are in Canada, UK and Swtizerland. Tax rates in all three higher than US. Can’t get a destroyer to Switzerland unless you feel like cruising alpine lakes and singing Sound of Music. . As for Canada and UK: pretty sure you can take commercial….”
Don’t know if that was from a Brocker or not but it sure gave me a well needed belly laugh.
Reason chimes in with a very nice article:

@Charl Mr. Hunter must have been before my time starting here about June 2014.
@ JC
If you’re curious about Tom Hunter you can get a taste of his venom in this exchange 6 months ago (check out his gravatar too — yuck!):

BTW, he used that bit over and over again in other comment sections, sometimes changing his name, but he couldn’t disguise his true self.
