Media and Blog Articles – Part 1 of 11 (to 26 May 2015)
You can access all years at this link:

EmBee suggested that it would be good if there was a thread for new articles, so that people would be aware of where to comment. So, I created this permanent page. You could mention such articles in the comment stream for this page, or if I see one on another thread, I can copy the link to here. I’ll keep adding to the list, but not deleting, so we’ll end up having sort of a “bibliography” too. [Note: Some articles are not open for comments]
For more articles on FATCA, enter FATCA into Google then click on the link “more news for fatca” just below the most recent featured article.
Note also: JC suggests to see #FATCA on Twitter for latest breaking news. JC finds that is quite a good source and there even are some international articles that one may read using Google Translate.” Others may help certain tweets and articles remain in elevated position by retweeting them.

I agree with you on both counts, Neill. Matthew Little appears to have been listening and thank you Trish for the great job you did in detailing our situation. Today I had to take a very hard look at who I might rely on as allies in this struggle, and hands down, Brock fits the bill. No lawyer, accountant, MP, Member of Congress, fellow Canadian, priest or journalist will ever provide to me what you all do in your empathy and outrage as to what is a truly outrageous situation. Today was not a great day for me, but you’ve all through your camaraderie continue to lift my spirits when I need it the most! I know it’s kind of schmaltzy, but thank you all!
@Bubblebustin Keep on Bustin! You deserve thanks as well from the cause and those supporting it.
Thank you, JC. Sometimes you just need a shoulder to cry on.
I tried about 5 times over the past 8 hours to put the bloombergview article link here, that Bubblebustin pointed out. I think that article should be featured on IBS and listed above. It is the only Inversion article that doesn’t say those inverting will pay US tax for US source income – just like every other country in the world. As Bubblebustin says it has lots of good comments about RBT.
@Bubblebustin. We may have to give you a day off. It is amazing the passion shown here that will ultimately prevail against those who say ‘just renounce.’
Bubblebustin says: A refreshing article on inversions that draws the connection between citizens and corporations, FATCA, and includes a twitter link to another outspoken McGill professor with American roots:
Jacob Levy, an American professor living in Montreal – May IBS, MS, or ADCS recruit this individual?
@Bubblebustin
We all have bad days…. but realize… tomorrow is another day & u will feel better… I am very thankful for this web site… people understand the crap I am going through… I try to chat about this situation with others without revealing my situation other to my family who are sick & tired of hearing about it… I thank u for all your insights on the situation… it helps to have many view points to look at… if it wasn’t for this web site… I would feel more alone & isolated then I feel sometimes… so I again thank u…
BTW… what is that bs with Roy Berg… ain’t he just a resident & not a canadian? Talk about a shark swimming around to get to the blood… I feel like he is rolling the dead body over to go through the pockets for extra penny that maybe there… Amazing a non-canadian is trying to get his viewpoint out to canadians…
Thank you USForeignPerson, JC
There are some people who don’t want to have our issues associated with those of corporations. I can see their point in that corporations are profit driven, but the issue here is extraterritorial taxation. Extraterritorial taxation is the enemy, and in this case, the enemy of my enemy is my friend.
It’s actually laughable, isn’t it, that the same people who scream that corporations aren’t people might take the view that we’d renounce for the same reason a corporation would.
@Bubbebustin
I think we have to get people to look at these issues unemotionally. Everybody who screams about “patriotism” is reacting emotionally and not rationally. Stopping extraterritorial taxation is a RATIONAL conclusion. Trying to stop people/corporations from renouncing/inversions is an emotional decision that will not work because it is repressive. A rational solution to fix the problem at the root and make America more attractive would be the real solution. I just don`t know how to get that across to the angry masses- but it is because they are so angry and so afraid that the decisions they are making are so distorted. RBT is a rational answer to the problem – for example. Somehow they are in love with America and the rest of the world is not- so they see America through rose-colored glasses, instead of being pragmatic. For them criticism of America is like criticism of their own child. You DONT criticise somebody`s baby! But corporations are oblivious to things like that- emotional reasoning. They just go the way of sound business sense. Make America a sound business choice and the problem would be resolved.
Wow. Now people are trying to use a FATCA scam to get account details of people with money. I am sure they just want to shake their hands once they get their address:

Neill
that is a good article. I have always been interested in fraud investigation. FATCA shows promise of many fraudulent attempts, successful and unsuccessful. I am sending this link to my MP. He can become aware of this and put this in the anti FATCA Parliament comments and also at group meetings in his riding .
This should be a Canadian newspaper as well. There has been a lot of articles on FATCA lately. European person I know has noticed this. That is good news.
I think the FATCA plant may die in time. or the USA.
Forbes picked up the fee hike story! http://www.forbes.com/sites/robertwood/2014/08/28/u-s-hikes-fee-to-renounce-citizenship-by-422/?utm_source=followingimmediate&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=20140828
Want to Get Rid of US Citizenship? Fee Just Quadrupled — to $2,350. Patrick Cain, Global News.
@ Neill
Well well well, that unintended consequence that we Brockers have been talking about for a while now is begiinning to come home to roost. We shouldn’t be surprised. And if some homelanders are surprised, well I guess this is their OMG moment. Maybe – – just MAYBE – – someone in Congress will wake up and think about this and wonder what country or terror group will be next in working to get this list of US-persons in their territory. Stupid legislation has REALLY SERIOUS real-life ramifications. Hopefully this will get LOTS AND LOTS of US press coverage. May the OMG moments begin! We told them but they wouldn’t listen……

@calgary411: yep, and if she asks the State Department to intervene in that case, they’ll tell her “We can’t make other countries look at you as an as American”

Eric,
It makes me want to scream!
So, one question is how can we make Canada (or any other country) not look at us as Americans (“who happen to reside in our own countries”) to preclude the need to renounce a *supposed* US-defined US citizenship for the cost of US$2,350 — rather than their idiotic advice “Just renounce” — https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ANqVaEpRi_4? They are all in the back pocket of the US or afraid to stand up to the economic threats made by the US.

This one has Senators. There were a number of Republican Senators who voted for FATCA
Thanks for the link, JC. No surprise that my congressman voted no – he’s Bill Posey.

@Calgary411
I suggest this one for feature on IBS by Americans abroad titled:
Why FATCA is Bad for America – Update (no date on “update”)
http://americansabroad.org/issues/fatca/fatca-bad-america/#.VADYdyUJ-fc.twitter
There is a lot of information here. This is Americansabroad argument why FATCA is Bad. May we at IBS comment on it with an eye to strengthening the arguments put forward, then we may send it back to Americansabroad.
While there is lots of information at IBS there are no master documents summarising all points. Here is where Americansabroad have a summary.
One area where it could be strengthened is mention of the tax treaties. Australia is mentioned and says that not much extra tax would be owed. Point of Information: the US wants to tax the Australian pension fund called Superannuation. Also, if you have a share/shares and get Australian dividends – there is an Australian tax break on dividends – you would likely have U.S. tax liability. Also, the US wants to tax on “passive income.” So the closer to retirement the more passive income you may have, the greater your retirement funds, the greater the U.S. double tax exposure.
@JC
THATS EXCELLENT! What a great article. And it is what I keep saying: America doesn’t care who else it harms. If you are not a homelander than get the hell out- while leaving your money in a pot on your way out.
Only if USA can see the huge mountain of harm it is doing to itself will they change anything.
My last three posts here I found on Twitter. Search FATCA, and click on All search results.
Calgary411 I see that the ACA article was put on IBS and tweeted on Twitter. Thanks. On Twitter the IBS Twitter image is the picture of Isaac Brock.
I suggest this as a branding extension for IBS: make a favicon of this image for the IBS website. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Favicon http://www.favicon.co.uk/ So that a mini picture of IB appears to the left of the web page tab at the top. Right now what shows is a blank page with the upper right hand corner folded down – could be lots better.
I am, even with Just Me’s tutoring, not Twitter literate. I leave that and will leave these likely excellent suggestions to another Brocker. Thanks, JC.
I`m not Twitter “literate” either. Nice way of putting it. I`m getting older and all this innovation is catching up with me. I can`t keep jumping through hoops to keep up- its gets more and more tedious with each passing year. Sigh. But I certainly would be curious….
