Media and Blog Articles – Part 1 of 11 (to 26 May 2015)
You can access all years at this link:

EmBee suggested that it would be good if there was a thread for new articles, so that people would be aware of where to comment. So, I created this permanent page. You could mention such articles in the comment stream for this page, or if I see one on another thread, I can copy the link to here. I’ll keep adding to the list, but not deleting, so we’ll end up having sort of a “bibliography” too. [Note: Some articles are not open for comments]
For more articles on FATCA, enter FATCA into Google then click on the link “more news for fatca” just below the most recent featured article.
Note also: JC suggests to see #FATCA on Twitter for latest breaking news. JC finds that is quite a good source and there even are some international articles that one may read using Google Translate.” Others may help certain tweets and articles remain in elevated position by retweeting them.

Observations and suggestions by LM on the renunciation thread, which are also very relevant to this thread.
@pacifica777 Sounds good. Should some talent here develop some more relevant images that may accompany press releases, such as the expected one on the Human Rights Complaint?
@ Moderator,
I see this above: Note also Headline News Online: FATCA News. Calgary411 discovered that website which also has links to FATCA articles.
Below this we may put: Also see FATCA on Twitter for latest breaking news. I believe that is quite a good source. There even are some international articles that one may read using Google Translate.
@ JC,
Thanks for the suggestion. I just added it.
Interesting article in Financial Post by J. Melnitzer…my device wouln’t send a link but its easily found. The article seems “condor” inspired but makes some disconcerting points about the Charter Challenge succeeding but FATCA remaining ominously threatening to us.
WSJ: http://online.wsj.com/articles/treasury-officials-preparing-options-to-address-tax-inversions-1408382442
Treasury said they could do no more legally about inversions. Now Obama told them to think again. This eventually will be the approach to people giving up citizenship / green cards.
@Neill…..Paywall…..
What was that technique to access a cached copy again? Does this apply to this article?
@PierreD,
Try searching for the title:
Treasury Officials Preparing Options to Address Tax Inversions
I have a subscription since I feel the WSJ generates most of the news articles on issues I think are important.
This is the link to the Financial Post article mentioned by Lake Superior Guy (thanks!):
http://business.financialpost.com/2014/08/18/canada-u-s-dual-citizens-could-be-worse-off-if-fatca-lawsuit-succeeds/
…or go to Google News and search there for the title. It works everytime for me for WSJ articles (not so much for some others).
Try a nicer article. Can’t comment though.
https://www.uschamber.com/blog/exit-strategy-fatca-tax-law-keeps-pushing-americans-give-citizenship
On the post article. I gave money to the lawsuit. I don’t live in Canada or am I a Canadian. I live in the US. I gave them money because I think the US congress is doing stuff that is terrible. How anyone could think a person who has never worked in the US should pay taxes there or even file informational forms is beyond me. Then again I guess I am evil thinking that if I leave the US that my tax obligations should be confined to investments I hold in the US rather than having the tax obligations but no rights to live in the US etc.
@Calgary411
Woo Hoo……nice find on Julius Melnitzer! You rock big time!
You all might appreciate this one which is very pro-plaintiff.
“Mad As Hell And Not Going To Take It Anymore: Two Brave Women Sue Canadian Government Over Controversial FATCA Deal”

To make you sick, It seems Levin is crowing about his FATCA legacy:
http://www.politico.com/morningtax/0814/morningtax15040.html
““[W]e collected a lot of money… after our hearing on UBS … there were 45,000 taxpayers who owned up who had offshore accounts, and I think we collected $6.5 billion just on that one. The FATCA is just really beginning to get underway…”
Some of those 45k people might have actually being evading taxes rather than just investing in their home or previous home countries.
@Bubblebustin – thanks! That certainly puts me in a better mood, which was quite black after hearing about that full of crap Melnitzer article!
I think most Canadians would stand behind Gwen and Ginny. It’s that 30% withholding that’s going stick in people’s craw – and let’s face it, there’s not a lot of love for the banks these days. On the poultry theme, Canadian banks look something like crosses between chickens and vultures under the IGA, without it they’d only look more so if Mr Berg’s predictions come true.
@GwEvil
Cute photo of you standing in your yacht’s galley, though 😉
@Bubblebustin – Oh no! They promised not to show my yacht!!
Thanks, charl.
The find is from Lynne / Blaze as she has known of Mr. Melntizer longer than any of us, being from the same city. She had his number quite some time ago and blew his more ethical cover when another article appeared months ago, perhaps also in the Financial Post.
Gwen was your yacht docked on the French Rivera
Also glad to see you stashed thextoothpaste with diamonds in it
@Bubblebustin
and the part about the transactions in dollars and the petrodollar! People won’t let themselves be blackmailed forever – mainly because blackmailers tend to up the ante when they see they can succeed with it. FATCA really will be the death of the petrodollar, in that case. Sometimes I think people are just to shocked at the moment- but when they gather their bearings- alternatives will be sought.
@Neill
Did you read the one comment that went something like this: “typical demokrat solution……your girlfriend opposes the fact that you slap her around and the answer is to handcuff her to the gas pipe.”
LOLOLOLOLOLOL
Ah. Needed a good laugh this morning.
sadly J. Melnitzer has a valid point, we could win the battle and lose the war. the future is hard to predict
based on the knowledge and defined wisdom of the times he would have foreseen disaster for the rebels at Lexington and Concord, or the Israelites of the Exodus
another axiom that comes to mind is “Winning the war and losing the peace” if the US wins the FATCA war
what would the peace look like
1. an angry and rebellious diaspora
2. qualified, successful career scientist and entrepreneurs refusing to work in the US for fear or risking
their savings and investments in their home countries to the IRS
3. accelerated movement away from the USD as a reserve and trading currency
hardly the aim of those pushing FATCA
Serbia seems to be putting it’s foot down:

@Polly,
Didn’t see that comment. I really like it though.
Just in case you think it’s only the US we have HMRC wanting new powers. They want the power to go back more than 20 years (which dwarfs what the IRS can do without it’s changes to statute of limitations for say 8621) and they want to make it a crime not to pay your taxes without regard to why you did it.

I am hoping Brockers in the UK will warn me if they start taxing my stuff that’s outside the UK (I have nothing there but pensions protected by the tax treaty and a single life insurance policy).
Base documents from HMRC are here:

Enter the UK with a 529 plan or a HSA and you could be in a big mess if you don’t declare the income.
