EmBee suggested that it would be good if there was a thread for new articles, so that people would be aware of where to comment. So, I created this permanent page.  You could mention such articles in the comment stream for this page, or if I see one on another thread, I can copy the link to here. I’ll keep adding to the list, but not deleting, so we’ll end up having sort of a “bibliography” too.  [Note:  Some articles are not open for comments]

    Judging by the comments of many Brits in reaction to theTelegraph article- it seems to me they are much more negatively oriented towards America than one expects. And they are quite vocal about it and their own sovereignty as well.

    Democrats Abroad France, from their facebook page:

    We agree that RBT would be a much better arrangement for Americans living abroad, have passed resolutions affirming our commitment to it, and passed those on to the DNC. We want it to become part of the Democratic Party platform in 2016. That would of course solve a host of problems, but would also require legislative action, and it would be nearly impossible to bring any such legislation to the House floor, where it would have to originate. We need relief now, and the regulatory proposal that we defend — the Same Country Safe Harbor proposal — is the best and most immediate band-aid that will do much to help all Americans living abroad by providing the kind of relief we urgently need until a long-term and deeper solution–like RBT–can get the congressional attention it deserves.

    An actual commitment to pursue RBT over the long term! Instead of the usual, “well, it would be nice, but we’re not going to stick our necks out here” demurral. Is somebody actually starting to listen for a change?

    Is this the official policy of DA, or only of DAFrance, or of just one person in DAF?

    I haven’t seen anything on the DA FB site other than going after RBT would just simply take too long so we are only going for SCE.

    I posted a reply to one world’s bizarre reply to me but it didn’t get in before VOA closed the comment section. Apparently criticizing CBT and FATCA is tantamount to insulting one world’s children. For the record here is what I tried to post late last night …

    So as carefully as I tried to explain that your FATCA laws DO affect me, you had to ignore it all and rant on about me insulting your children. I said I do not respect US citizenship-based taxation (CBT) and FATCA which is the enforcer of CBT. Both are creating great distress for Americans and deemed “US persons” all over the globe. That’s got nothing to do with American citizens or their children. What is wrong with you? BTW my husband is the person he is because he had great American parents and he grew up in my, now our, country. He has spent more of his life here than in the USA. So … news flash … I do not cherish my husband because he used to be American. I cherish him because he is an upstanding human being. Thank you for at least acknowledging that I have the right and privilege to criticize your government (as I do my own) and I will continue to do so.

    you did get your comments. As a reply. I am the last one on the bottom. I am curious if One World is in the military, not in the high rank, but lower. Navy?
    I wote a comment asking that but I guess comments were closed. I now thought I could have mentioned one of my benefits relinquishing my US citizenship is I can vacation in beautiful Cuba.

    Well lo and behold there it is now. I swear it was not there earlier today. I retract my miffedness at missing the comments closed deadline — looks like it was just really slooooow moderation. 🙂 One world is certainly an angry one, despite his/her professed longing for “happiness and tranquility”.

    I had to have a big laugh at this at the end.
    Polling analyst Scott Clement contributed to this report. Makes me wonder on the writer.

    This story was corrected to accurately reflect poll numbers. The 81 percent approval number from Canadians in the 2013 Pew poll was for Barack Obama, not George W. Bush.

Many of us Democrats abroad feel lost and abandoned in the ensuing mess created by FATCA and CBT, but remain Democrats at heart. Including RBT within the party platform will make us feel welcomed back to our political home.

    RBT is unfortunately going to require a lot of heavy lifting. The Democrats Abroad have it in our platform, but the DNC hasn’t yet adopted it into theirs. We’re working on it. The most important thing is that Americans abroad stick together … in the Democratic party (preferably) or in some other organizing representing our shared interests … because it’s only united that we’ll be able to do that heavy lifting.

    This seems like possibly a watershed moment, depending on how high up in DA this stance goes.
    Though much holding of feet to the fire will still be required, I suspect.

  25. Democrats Abroad could use Shadow Raider’s brilliant proposal to “make it easy” for Congress to adopt RBT, That would save them and Congress from doing all that “heavy lifting.” Goodness we don’t want anyone to strain their back with all that heavy lifting, do we?
