Media and Blog Articles – Part 1 of 11 (to 26 May 2015)

EmBee suggested that it would be good if there was a thread for new articles, so that people would be aware of where to comment. So, I created this permanent page. You could mention such articles in the comment stream for this page, or if I see one on another thread, I can copy the link to here. I’ll keep adding to the list, but not deleting, so we’ll end up having sort of a “bibliography” too. [Note: Some articles are not open for comments]
For more articles on FATCA, enter FATCA into Google then click on the link “more news for fatca” just below the most recent featured article.
Note also: JC suggests to see #FATCA on Twitter for latest breaking news. JC finds that is quite a good source and there even are some international articles that one may read using Google Translate.” Others may help certain tweets and articles remain in elevated position by retweeting them.

Here’s a list of Lynne & Victoria’s articles. (Hope I didn’t miss any.) Please note that the Money Guide links are kaput now but I included them anyway. It’s like a history of FATCA from OMG to IGA and beyond.

USA Went To War With UK Over Taxing…See The Irony
While Canada waits for further instruction from the USA.
@ Calgary411 “While Canada waits….” You got that right, exactly what I was thinking as well. I heard that March 31 is the deadline.
@Charl, my thoughts exactly. SWIFT was used as the club to enforce Fatca and bully the world. AIIB is the pushback. I’m surprised Canada, the most aggrieved in terms of ‘collateral damage’, hasn’t jumped in. Implicitly, Congress has spoken?
@Calgary411. Thanks for all that. There is one link missing for the last article.
Sorry about the missing links (they didn’t transfer properly from my list.

I would LOVE to read this article, but you have to subscribe. I tried everything.
EmBee: Thanks so much for posting that comprehensive list of Lynne’s and Victoria’s articles! Wow!

Thanks EmBee for posting that list. I did not have a record of them myself.
I submitted several to main stream media, including Toronto Star, Gkobe and Mail, Wall Strret Journal, Washington Post, Washungton Times, New York Times, Huffington Post, USA Today, etc., but none of them were accepted. Some were co written with Victoria and others were written by me alone. Victoria has also submitted some written by just her.
@ Blaze
I think I tried too many links for one comment but cut & paste should get you to all but The Money Guide articles (that site is gone now). Do you have others I could add to my list?
CBC Radio News – Alison Brunette: “2015 Tax Season Difficult for Dual Citizens”, which includes input from John Richardson.
…and related CBC article I had not previously read until looking for the above: CBC January 2007 — ‘Border babies’ face fight for Canadian citizenship
Thanks for posting the link to the CBC story:
CBC Radio News – Alison Brunette: “2015 Tax Season Difficult for Dual Citizens”,
have
I heard the news item this morning at the 6:00 a.m. broadcast, but not in later broadcasts, As I remember it, it said that these accidentals born across the border have to pay (only) about $1500. Surely they have to pay much more than that!
It was nice to hear John speaking about ADCS.
@ calgary411
RE: CBC radio — Guess I’m just a grumpy-pants today but I’m tired of chirpy “reporters” making what to them might be slight errors in describing FATCA but what to me are significant errors. It’s not just innocent nuance to imply that the Canadian government negotiated a great deal with it’s bully neighbour. It’s flat out wrong — they did not! It’s coverage though, I suppose, and there’s been precious little of that for quite awhile.
RE: CBC article — I had no idea that we had “Canadians without status”. WTF is wrong with our government? That situation should be corrected immediately. This is outrageous!
EmBee, sounds like the CBC people got their *Canadian government negotiated a great deal with its bully neighbour* from some Conservative government representative, recipient of our Canadian Challenge. Shows there are still so many who do not know about this. We must continue to both inform and to gather needed donations for all affected in Canada: http://www.adcs-adsc.ca/!!!
And, yes, the other article was quite an eye-opener for me so I thought it needed to be read here by others as well!!!
Queenston, a tradesman / friend who is going to do some more repair work on my Canadian asset whose capital gains could have been taxed in the US had I not renounced before ever thinking of selling (which I am not), asked me if I had heard this item on CBC this morning — so I did some searching to find it this. I’m sure it clarified in his mind my rantings over this the past several years.
It all is so hard for anyone but us to properly get their heads around — including, as we know, our Canadian government representatives, especially if they are Conservatives. Because I live in Calgary, I have no government representation — all of the MPs here are Conservative.
@Calgary411
Good interview from CBC Quebec– thank you.
This is the second news piece from Quebec in the past two weeks (other story was from LaPresse I believe).
It’s good to see the Quebec media becoming aware of the FATCA issue and getting the information out to Quebecers. Having spent close to a decade living in Quebec, I suspect francophone Quebecers will be quite resentful to the US overreach as they become informed. FATCA will be viewed as yet another violation of Quebec sovereignty– by the US at the hands of the federal government.
@EmBee
The issue regarding Canadians who lost their citizenship at 24 was fixed by Bill C37 in 2009. Most (but not all) had their citizenship restored retroactively back to the date of loss. There are however still some exceptions.
A summary is available here: http://www.americanlaw.com/canadiancitizenshipbirthabroad.html
Somehow the radio show doesn’t get the URGENCY across. It makes it sound trivial.
Republicans Overseas Facebook has an article on limiting bank withdrawals over 5000$
So people are supposed to use credit cards for everything now or what? I rarely use a credit card in my hometown.
Someone should write to the Mayor of that town and provide him with expansive information on FATCA and ADCS.
Polly, with credit cards your financial history can be quantified and monitored (survielled); dont you understand??? LOL (tho not really funny, is it…..)
