Media and Blog Articles – Part 1 of 11 (to 26 May 2015)
You can access all years at this link:

EmBee suggested that it would be good if there was a thread for new articles, so that people would be aware of where to comment. So, I created this permanent page. You could mention such articles in the comment stream for this page, or if I see one on another thread, I can copy the link to here. I’ll keep adding to the list, but not deleting, so we’ll end up having sort of a “bibliography” too. [Note: Some articles are not open for comments]
For more articles on FATCA, enter FATCA into Google then click on the link “more news for fatca” just below the most recent featured article.
Note also: JC suggests to see #FATCA on Twitter for latest breaking news. JC finds that is quite a good source and there even are some international articles that one may read using Google Translate.” Others may help certain tweets and articles remain in elevated position by retweeting them.

Odd that Mr Reed would use the name Vangie, as that’s the name of one of the principals in the law firm where he works. I’ve met this Vangie.
About the Financial Post article, you Brockers have great comments… one comment from Katrina Maxwell says “There are some great comments under that article!” (this is in the American Expatriates blog on FB).
So I coined a new word:
Brockbuster(s) — “IBS blogger(s) who show that a statement or position made in the media about FATCA, FBAR, RBT and the like are totally false”
@ kermitzii
Brockbusters … I like that. I came up with one for the infamous omnibus bills into which Stephen Harper invariably inserts damaging legislation (like Bill C-31 with its Part V containing FATCA) … blunderbus bills.
Eric. Re. Non-Doms. ( non domiciled). in the UK. The article is accurate. Let’s say I was born in UK but left as a young man and establish myself as a money manager in Hong Kong. I’m then invited back to London to run a bank .
I declare my intention to return to HK to retire. My UK income is taxed at home but I arrange for my bonus to be paid in HK untaxed. There are apparently 10s of thousands of these Non-Doms.
In relation to the FP article, nervousinvestor posted the following excellent comment 6 hours ago: ” If Max Reed is a lawyer surely he could be reported to the Bar Association or whatever other regulatory agency might be relevant for the statement “Unless you have U.S. source income, you will not owe anything”
I think this is an outstanding idea. Anyone want to take this on? Why shouldn’t the Bar Assn be informed of this spreading of lies to the public? Mr. Reed isn’t just giving his opinion here, he is presenting these details as if this information is FACT. And it certainly is not!
It is full of errors that can be harmful. It can cost people lots in terms of money and time and grief. Maybe he could have gotten away with this in the US, but here in Canada? Shameful!!! And the FP should be equally held accountable (tho I don’t know the mechanism for that).
PS Does anyone know if this web FP article printed in the actual paper newspaper? That would give further ammunition.
Also, if a denunciation letter is to be sent to the Bar Association, it should be authored by as much of an authority as possible (might Allison Christians or John Richardson be willing?)
This is off topic but I’m sure many Brockers are aware that currently the Harper government is ramming through yet another blunderbus bill which is an assault on the rights and freedoms of Canadians. This time it is Bill C-51, the so-called “anti-terrorism act” which arose from the fairly recent “broom closet event” in Ottawa. I’ve been reading through the parliamentary debate on this and I’m pleased to see that our Bill C-31 fighters gave it their all with Bill C-51 too — Murray Rankin, Alex Atamaneko, Elizabeth May, Pegg Nash — and from the Northwest Territories we have MP Dennis Bevington who said:
http://openparliament.ca/bills/41-2/C-51/#?singlepage=1
And he continues …
It’s all too, too sad and familiar after what we witnessed with the Bill C-31 travesty last year.
I wonder if someday, after Joseph Arvay wins our lawsuit, he will be called upon once again to defend Canadian rights and freedoms
“Broom closet event” EmBee, lol!
Had his character been that of one who defends others, he would have responded differently.
@Calgary411 – Bless you for your letter to the FP editor. We all appreciate your courage and articulate comments.
Yes, LM. Deckard made this a post and Stephen Kish gave this comment this morning:
http://isaacbrocksociety.ca/2015/03/07/financial-post-hits-a-new-low-in-fatca-reporting/comment-page-1/#comment-5709542
Thank you, LM — lots of good comments from lots of articulate Brockers. The article could be better written by using all of the information there — strike out the text of the article and refer to the comments.
@ Canada debt clock:
Keep checking the various pages of the Isaacbrock site and when you go to comment, there is a box under “Post Comment” that you can check for follow-up on that particular page and/or to follow-up generally (it says “Notify me of new posts by email”).
You will receive an email from Worldpress so you can check which sections of IBS you want to follow.
You can follow them all but probably will want to stick with the most recent and then just explore some of the earlier posts and comments by heading over to Archive and looking at what interests you.
Welcome and we look forward to hearing from you.
WOW, look at the title of this piece — FATCA is the Most Destructive Law Perhaps in History – “soft fascism”. Of course Roy Berg would call it “hyperbolic, jingoism rhetoric” but who cares.

@ Duke of Devon:
“There are apparently 10s of thousands of these Non-Doms.”
FT reported that there were 116,000 in 2013 in the article: “The madness of King George III’s non-dom tax system”. The article gives an overview of the non-dom tax scheme and might be worth a read.

Joining this Facebook group – Making Friends Through Rand Paul – is a fabulous opportunity to post and get our issues heard by people in the US:

Legislative copy-and-paste is hilarious to watch (from a safe distance). My favourite was when Venezuela put itself on its own tax haven blacklist:

@ Bubblebustin –
I am not on Factbook, nor do I wish to be.
But for those that are, I wonder if there are other congress-folk’s FB pages that could be “visited” and “decorated” with IBS insights about how US Expats see the world (especially FATCA, FBAR, PFIC, etc. etc. etc)
It is wondered if this will be an educational opportunity to the homelanders or just a wast of time? Maybe a bit of both.
@LM
There is often a LOT of activity happing on FB. Especially on the RO, AARO, DA, Ways and Means and AE FB sites. At the moment there is much going on over at Rand Paul’s FB page under his FATCA repeal entry. Walter, a dedicated Brocker, also “peppers” (his term) many governmental/legislators FB sites with current news articles and we just follow him around offering support.
It would be worth joining FB if for nothing else that to have other avenues for “educating” the legislators. You could join as LM Funky!
Eric – great contribution from our friend at LSE on blacklists! Thanks!
If privacy issues are a concern, just make up a fake FB account.
@Walt, FB wants a phone number for verification these days.
@JC What is your favourite number?
@JC
Just take a random one from the phonebook. Can’t let Big Brother have everything.
