Media and Blog Articles
EmBee suggested that it would be good if there was a thread for new articles, so that people would be aware of where to comment. So, I created this permanent page. I’ll make a permanent list of links posted here and keep adding to it, but not deleting, so we’ll end up having sort of a “bibliography” of FATCA/CBT articles. [Note: Some articles are not open for comments]
For more articles on FATCA, enter FATCA into Google then click on the link “more news for fatca” just below the most recent featured article.
Notes:
From JC: To see #FATCA on Twitter for latest breaking news. JC finds that is quite a good source and there even are some international articles that one may read using Google Translate. Others may help certain tweets and articles remain in elevated position by retweeting them.
From Badger: On an important archival note, please use the Internet Archive Wayback machine https://archive.org/web/ (see bottom right ‘Save Page Now’ box to enter URLs of webpages you want saved for posterity, and try to save backup copies of articles and other items of interest in some other form – such as a datastick or external drive. Some important and very significant webpages and the fulltexts of articles are no longer available (although some can be retrieved if someone using the Wayback machine saved them).
Be sure to read the comment stream for this thread — there are usually very recent articles mentioned there that aren’t on this list yet.

Interesting article on the 14th Amendment and Trump’s options to change birthright rules.
It doesn’t seem to hold hope for accidentals whose non US parents were in the US briefly (but legally) and “subject to the jurisdiction thereof” at their birth.

@PierreD
Slate has a story on the green cards. Apparently it was green card holders from the seven countries named in Trump’s order who were told they had to relinquish their green cards due to the ninety day ban. Obviously other green card holders from non-target countries have noticed that the border guards were quite willing to trick legal permanent residents out of their green cards, hence the panicking Thais.

@Publius: there were some articles recently in Chinese American and Korean American newspapers warning people not to get pressured into signing I-407 at the US border.

Warnings about I-407 are kind of an evergreen story, though; e.g. here’s one from the World Journal from more than a year ago
http://www.worldjournal.com/3640334/article-%E5%8E%9F%E6%A9%9F%E9%81%A3%E8%BF%94%EF%BC%9F%E7%B6%A0%E5%8D%A1%E8%BF%94%E7%BE%8E-%E9%80%99%E5%BC%B5%E8%A1%A8%E5%88%A5%E7%B0%BD%EF%BC%81/
I haven’t heard any stories of acquaintances from non-banned countries being asked to sign I-407 (did happen to a friend of a friend a couple of years ago, but he’d been staying in Seoul on a permanent basis and was just visiting the US every six months assuming that would let him keep his green card).

RE: the City A.M. article
My comment seemed to post (after 3 tries) but when I checked back it was gone. Maybe DISQUS is having problems today. As you can see there’s nothing in my comment that could upset a moderator.
@EmBee, you cheer me up so much! That was so positive and when I read all your comments thats why I KNOW we shall have VICTORY.
@ George O
You keep all of our spirits up with your positive attitude. It’s just nice to be able to write about a “window of opportunity” instead of reading about “doors slamming”. Nigel and Jim and the team they are assembling give us hope, without which it’s hard to “Surgite!” I wonder. What will Nigel and Lynne talk about today? (My curiosity quotient is probably higher than what’s good for me but I can’t help it.)
This is very embarrassing and smells a lot like betrayal!
Somebody within the Trump cabinet certainly approved signing the recent FATCA IGA with Ukraine. Reince Preibus is all too aware of the RNC resolutions and campaign platform against FATCA and in support of RBT.

FATCA hurting Caribbean: Revoke it, Mr Trump
http://www.jamaicaobserver.com/editorial/FATCA-hurting-Caribbean–Revoke-it–Mr-Trump_89267
@Ellen C., I liked this conclusion from the article you cite above:
“…Jamaica’s Finance Minister Audley Shaw made a strong statement when Caribbean finance ministers met with the US Treasury and the International Monetary Fund late last year. Prime Minister Gaston Browne of Antigua and Barbuda hosted a special conference shortly thereafter.
Recently, the leader of the Opposition in Trinidad and Tobago Mrs Kamla Persad-Bissessar did something almost unheard of by writing to then President-elect Donald Trump to remind him that in his presidential campaign he indicated that he would abolish FATCA. The Wall Street Journal took up the issue in an editorial.
Latest development is that a seminar is scheduled for tomorrow at the SUNY-UWI Centre for Governance and Sustainable Development in New York to mobilise support for a change in US policy. The strong Caribbean team includes Sir Kenneth Hall; former prime minister of Barbados Owen Arthur; Ambassador Dr Richard Bernal, pro-vice chancellor of global affairs at UWI; former president of the Caribbean Development Bank Professor Compton Bourne; and Dr Damien King of the UWI Economics Department.
Combating money laundering and terrorist financing is a goal shared by this newspaper and Caribbean governments. Suitable arrangements have to be put in place to ensure that this can be attained while allowing normality in international financing. Hopefully, the SUNY-UWI seminar will help influence the US to repeal FATCA.
We wish the team well in their mission.”

Small nations are raising objections to FATCA, yet Canada, etc. stay mum – or abuse local taxpayer revenues by misusing our taxes to defend the US FATCA and the deal they made with that devil. The bigger nations should find their mislaid gonads and do the same.
There’s a nasty piece of work going by the name of 2492 in the comments section over at Stars and Stripes:

@ Bubblebustin
I think 2492 is being well responded to by you, Swiss Techie, PastBeyond60, Lisa in OZ, myriadocks, etc. I’m afraid I got a bit snarky in my comment but reading some of the comments there made me start typing with my middle finger.
