EmBee suggested that it would be good if there was a thread for new articles, so that people would be aware of where to comment.   So, I created this permanent page.   I’ll make a permanent list of links posted here and keep adding to it,  but not deleting, so we’ll end up having sort of a  “bibliography” of FATCA/CBT articles.  [Note:  Some articles are not open for comments]

    Slate has a story on the green cards. Apparently it was green card holders from the seven countries named in Trump’s order who were told they had to relinquish their green cards due to the ninety day ban. Obviously other green card holders from non-target countries have noticed that the border guards were quite willing to trick legal permanent residents out of their green cards, hence the panicking Thais.

  4. @Publius: there were some articles recently in Chinese American and Korean American newspapers warning people not to get pressured into signing I-407 at the US border.

    I haven’t heard any stories of acquaintances from non-banned countries being asked to sign I-407 (did happen to a friend of a friend a couple of years ago, but he’d been staying in Seoul on a permanent basis and was just visiting the US every six months assuming that would let him keep his green card).

    New Democrat Nathan Cullen says if Palin was named the top U.S. representative to Canada, it would be tantamount to having to deal with two Donald Trumps.

    The ambassador’s job has been vacant since last month when Obama appointee Bruce Heyman resigned following Trump’s inauguration as president.

    White House press secretary Sean Spicer fuelled the rumour mill Wednesday when he didn’t outright deny the possibility, sending tongues wagging on social media.

    Cullen says making Palin ambassador would be detrimental to Canada’s efforts to build a stronger relationship with the Trump administration.

    He says it would be hard to take her seriously.

    “She has never been very comfortable with the truth,” Cullen said Thursday. “Couldn’t recognize it most mornings if it jumped up and knocked her on the head.”
    Still others questioned what message Trump would be sending by appointing Palin to the post.

    HONK! Thank you Nigel Green and Jim Jatras for your past, present and future efforts to end the injustice of “the worst law”. We have not had a definitive word from Pres. Trump about what his plans for FATCA would be (he’s got a long To Do list) but we know he has some good men around him who understand FATCA and want it repealed as per one of the planks in the RNC platform. The window of opportunity is open. GOOD LUCK!

    You keep all of our spirits up with your positive attitude. It’s just nice to be able to write about a “window of opportunity” instead of reading about “doors slamming”. Nigel and Jim and the team they are assembling give us hope, without which it’s hard to “Surgite!” I wonder. What will Nigel and Lynne talk about today? (My curiosity quotient is probably higher than what’s good for me but I can’t help it.)

    Recently, the leader of the Opposition in Trinidad and Tobago Mrs Kamla Persad-Bissessar did something almost unheard of by writing to then President-elect Donald Trump to remind him that in his presidential campaign he indicated that he would abolish FATCA. The Wall Street Journal took up the issue in an editorial.

    Small nations are raising objections to FATCA, yet Canada, etc. stay mum – or abuse local taxpayer revenues by misusing our taxes to defend the US FATCA and the deal they made with that devil. The bigger nations should find their mislaid gonads and do the same.

  21. Pre-clearance bill would give U.S. border agents in Canada new powers — Bill to expand border co-operation could also see permanent residents denied re-entry to Canada

    U.S. border guards would get new powers to question, search and even detain Canadian citizens on Canadian soil under a bill proposed by the Liberal government.

    Legal experts say Bill C-23, introduced by Public Safety Minister Ralph Goodale, and likely to pass in the current sitting of Parliament, could also erode the standing of Canadian permanent residents by threatening their automatic right to enter Canada.

    The bill would enshrine in law a reciprocal agreement for customs and immigration pre-clearance signed by the governments of Stephen Harper and Barack Obama in 2015. Both houses of Congress passed the U.S. version of the bill in December.

    Michael Greene, an immigration lawyer in Calgary, says C-23 takes away an important right found in the existing law.

    “A Canadian going to the U.S. through a pre-clearance area [on Canadian soil] can say: ‘I don’t like the way [an interview is] going and I’ve chosen not to visit your country.’ And they can just turn around and walk out.

    “Under the new proposed bill, they wouldn’t be able to walk out. They can be held and forced to answer questions, first to identify themselves, which is not so offensive, but secondly, to explain the reasons for leaving, and to explain their reasons for wanting to withdraw,” said Greene, who is national chair of the Canadian Bar Association’s citizenship and immigration section.

    “And that’s the part we think could be really offensive and goes too far.”
