Media and Blog Articles
EmBee suggested that it would be good if there was a thread for new articles, so that people would be aware of where to comment. So, I created this permanent page. I’ll make a permanent list of links posted here and keep adding to it, but not deleting, so we’ll end up having sort of a “bibliography” of FATCA/CBT articles. [Note: Some articles are not open for comments]
For more articles on FATCA, enter FATCA into Google then click on the link “more news for fatca” just below the most recent featured article.
Notes:
From JC: To see #FATCA on Twitter for latest breaking news. JC finds that is quite a good source and there even are some international articles that one may read using Google Translate. Others may help certain tweets and articles remain in elevated position by retweeting them.
From Badger: On an important archival note, please use the Internet Archive Wayback machine https://archive.org/web/ (see bottom right ‘Save Page Now’ box to enter URLs of webpages you want saved for posterity, and try to save backup copies of articles and other items of interest in some other form – such as a datastick or external drive. Some important and very significant webpages and the fulltexts of articles are no longer available (although some can be retrieved if someone using the Wayback machine saved them).
Be sure to read the comment stream for this thread — there are usually very recent articles mentioned there that aren’t on this list yet.

GREAT news from Norquist. If only the important and powerful voices against CBT arose and multiplied…. and they could finally hear not only the injustice but also the detriment for business! And it really is true that the IRS would probably save just about as much money if they didn’t have to go hunting down expats as they take in with FATCA.

“In the past weeks, the leaders of some of America’s most powerful traditional allies have signaled they perceive a fundamental change in the United States’ role in the world and are willing to change their policies accordingly. ”
Gives me hope that the other countries will reconsider the IGAs. Not holding my breath though.

Re WSJ article (http://isaacbrocksociety.ca/media-and-blog-articles-open-for-comments-part-4-of-4/comment-page-32/#comment-7899622) – there’s a WSJ podcast episode with an interview with the article’s author, Laura Saunders. Details:
The IRS has new tools to find secret accounts held overseas by Americans. And the Wall Street Journal’s Laura Saunders says tax evaders who’ve intentionally hidden money offshore from Uncle Sam are receiving harsher penalties, including prison time.

Norquist’ letter is welcome, but it would have been nice had he mentioned the compliance costs for those individuals who don’t have them covered by their employer (the vast majority of American’s living abroad).
In an era of protectionism, I’d hate for US lawmakers to only provide RBT to those employees who work for US companies abroad…

also a thought—- sometimes I saw that America felt justified in taxing expats because of all the “services” they provided- and foremost their protection. If America withdraws as a world leader, I feel that it could be a boost for RBT because it is like those services are no longer provided and therefore should not be taxed.
Indeed it’s harder to justify taxing citizens abroad when the country is retreating within its borders and putting up walls.
My interpretation of the following is the IRS can no longer change or create regulations solely in its FAQ’s (unless they say they are):

That’s pretty good JC – the IRS in their zealousness blow it! Kind of reminds me of when my son was accused of speeding and went to court to listen to the police officer tell the judge what speed my son was driving, only to be asked by the judge what the posted speed limit was. The police officer didn’t know, so the case was thrown out.
Bet that officer never made the same mistake again.
Just got this email from DAB.
“Today’s the day to join the June 15 Democrats Abroad Congressional Call Storm for Residency Based Taxation. Make sure your voice is heard so that Americans abroad like you need to pay tax on income generated in their country of residence ONLY in their country of residence. The United States and Eritrea are the only two countries who retain “Citizenship-Based Taxation” systems. Let’s make that just Eritrea.”

First time I’ve seen something this forceful from DA. Perhaps feeling the heat from members and the competition. Very heartening in any case. Note that a switch to RBT would allow them to save FATCA, which would then become a homelander problem.
Rather than that waste of time SCE, when facilitates CBT!
They need some kind of simpler system. Did my taxes recently. My options aren’t good because I live very far from any qualified tax people and don’t want to faff about sending things over the internet to distant people. I used to earn good money doing complex things with spreadsheets when that was still possible, am reasonably numerate, and have a fast typing speed. Even with all that, it took me a few stressful days of crunching figures, all to reveal yet again that I owe no tax to the U.S. government. Complete waste of time all around.
Wonderful to see Democrats Abroad’s call for action on a switch to RBT! It will be especially good for Democratic Senators & Representatives to be getting an earful on this.
Grover Norquist and Dems Abroad on the same page? What’s next, President Trump?
We should really spread the word to POTUS that CBT is OBAMA’s work and must be undone.
@Fred B: Actually, all we need to do is put the truth in front of Trump’s face. Maybe if we tweet hard enough that FATCA was Obama’s deal and that he expressed pride in its accomplishment, Trump might pay attention and issue an executive order to cancel it.
@Barbara
True true- applied psychology.
@Barbara – indeed for FATCA. But I was thinking if Trump could miraculously go after CBT too… Nevertheless we should start tweeting about Obama’s FATCA to Trump. Does he read tweets or just write them?
Anyway it’s sort of a strange mood right now. Hopes up about RBT with the Norquist-Dems Abroad consensus. Sort of deflates the problem with FATCA. Yet in truth FATCA is still bad, and perhaps more easily undone than CBT. But then again FATCA with RBT no longer concerns us. Also the problem of what kind of RBT… Oh well, many years more on IBS I guess.
