Media and Blog Articles
EmBee suggested that it would be good if there was a thread for new articles, so that people would be aware of where to comment. So, I created this permanent page. I’ll make a permanent list of links posted here and keep adding to it, but not deleting, so we’ll end up having sort of a “bibliography” of FATCA/CBT articles. [Note: Some articles are not open for comments]
For more articles on FATCA, enter FATCA into Google then click on the link “more news for fatca” just below the most recent featured article.
Notes:
From JC: To see #FATCA on Twitter for latest breaking news. JC finds that is quite a good source and there even are some international articles that one may read using Google Translate. Others may help certain tweets and articles remain in elevated position by retweeting them.
From Badger: On an important archival note, please use the Internet Archive Wayback machine https://archive.org/web/ (see bottom right ‘Save Page Now’ box to enter URLs of webpages you want saved for posterity, and try to save backup copies of articles and other items of interest in some other form – such as a datastick or external drive. Some important and very significant webpages and the fulltexts of articles are no longer available (although some can be retrieved if someone using the Wayback machine saved them).
Be sure to read the comment stream for this thread — there are usually very recent articles mentioned there that aren’t on this list yet.

Now here’s an interesting one: a US immigration lawyer publicly and non-anonymously advising a US-born Canadian not to enter the US tax system

And on a different note, Homelander thinks that permanent residents in the US should be forced to naturalise as US citizens after a certain period of time. Multiple commenters point out the existence of citizenship-based taxation to him, which only strengthens his view that permanent residents are getting away with something and being selfish by not becoming citizens.

That lawyer’s advice is all over the map, and not necessarily correct. But what I found interesting is this comment:

It’s not just HIS fight. There are a lot of people in this fight, playing their own parts, each according to their particular talents. I like to think of Brock as the nucleus of the snowball which is rolling down the hill, gaining mass and momentum every day.
@EmBee just wanted to say thank you to you.
EmBee: Thanks for posting Nigel Green’s update as well as the weekly Twitter news. I’m not a tweeter but I’m sure grateful for those who are. THANK YOU! 🙂
It is great that Nigel Green et al. are pushing FATCA repeal.
I am curious regarding their motivations and financing. Is there a deep pocketed group of people who are pushing for repeal?
I am also curious about the actual chances of this being in the tax reform bill.
Badger: thank you for the info. I have just registered with the European Parliament and then registered as a supporter of that petition, adding my comment too. I encourage other EU citizens to do so now.

Cayman Compass, March 15, 2017: “FATCA repeal on agenda of US Republicans”
High profile Elizabeth Thompson CBC story on FBAR fines– clarity is muddied to some extent by this person living in California during part of the time in question. The author very astutely points out the impact FATCA is set to have in Canada as so-called “US persons” living in Canada (Canadians!) will be set up for similar FBAR fines. For me, again, hiding in plain site and denial of my American heritage seem like the prudent path.

Global’s Patrick Cain has picked up the FBAR story:
U.S. sues Vancouver dual citizen for over $1M for not reporting accounts
“To my knowledge, this is one of the first actions of enforcement of FBAR penalties against a Canadian-resident U.S. citizen,” says Max Reed, a Vancouver-based cross-border tax lawyer.”

@Bubblebustin– I don’t know any Canadians with USC locally (BC Interior) who aren’t talking about jettisoning their USC– if they haven’t already. I helped my next door neighbour (a fellow MD) relinquish her USC two years ago. A couple of mutual friends of ours (a retired MD plus spouse) are preparing to renounce. Another colleague who is here as a permanent resident is counting the days until he qualifies for Canadian citizenship– he plans on relinquishing via his Canadian citizenship ceremony. I work with several nurses who are “duals”– like me, they are hiding in plain sight and denying any US taint.
Twenty-plus years ago when I registered my eldest’s birth “abroad” at the US consulate, the US passport seemed like a great idea. Now for most of us, that US claim is all just one big liability.

Many thanks to Nigel Green for his fabulous article at “The Hill”! Let’s hope Congress takes Nigel’s words to heart.
