Media and Blog Articles
EmBee suggested that it would be good if there was a thread for new articles, so that people would be aware of where to comment. So, I created this permanent page. You could mention such articles in the comment stream for this page, or if I see one on another thread, I can copy the link to here. I’ll keep adding to the list, but not deleting, so we’ll end up having sort of a “bibliography” of FATCA/CBT articles. [Note: Some articles are not open for comments]
For more articles on FATCA, enter FATCA into Google then click on the link “more news for fatca” just below the most recent featured article.
Note also: JC suggests to see #FATCA on Twitter for latest breaking news. JC finds that is quite a good source and there even are some international articles that one may read using Google Translate.” Others may help certain tweets and articles remain in elevated position by retweeting them.
Be sure to read the comment stream for this thread — there are usually very recent articles mentioned there that aren’t on this list yet.

@EmBee: Regarding the AARO “debate”, did you notice at the beginning most people in attendance apparently had already voted? I guess they showed up for the drinks. Though I will say, there was far more substance put forward in this discussion (whether you agreed with it or not) than the 90 percent mudslinging that went on between the two pathetic candidates at the pathetic “real” debates.

@ Barbara
I was disappointed that the audience questions seemed to indicate they were more focused on what should be primarily homelander issues. Guess they were temporary expats, not permanent expats. (They want to go home someday.) The panel might have done better if they’d had some questions in advance of the debate (like HC did in hers with DT). Then they could have looked up such things as the Dream Act. Oh well, at least FATCA got a bit of an airing. I suppose this is a reflection of the lack of real concern the 2 main candidates have for the wellfare of Americans outside the US borders. The panel members just had very little to drawn on as to how their candidates might act regarding the injustice of US extraterritorial taxation.
@ JC
Thank you! I see that hug-in at #tellamericaitsgreat is still dragging on today. I say piffle!
@EmBee,
We saw this before. I reported here that on the Republicans Abroad conference calls with Ted Cruz etc they asked almost nothing about the tax issues they face. They really don’t care for the most part. Most are probably not compliant.
@BC Doc,
Another on the same subject:

Kind of amazing that the US is asking banks to take it’s citizens as customers after it took said banks to the cleaners.
Of course the Us is quite happy to argue there isn’t a problem from the other side of it’s mouth.
@Neill–
I have know doubt the US government will find a way to assess penalties against the Swiss banks for “discriminating against”/refusing USC as customers.
Oops! Know s/b no… I’m getting distracted by baseball here (Go Cubs!).
@BC Doc
They’d first have to admit that FATCA is causing the bank account closures. So far Mythster Stack and the courts say it isn’t.
With many US persons netting more than the $250K deduction, the IRS is heavily invested in Vancouver real estate.

@badger
Very interesting that Democrats over a year ago knew that their rank and file members were leaning towards Sanders and yet the Clinton campaign did absolutely nothing to attract the overseas American vote (to the point of sending Madeline Albright to the Democrats Abroad primary event). Democrats Abroad UK was pushing Hillary Clinton really hard towards the back end of last year in a way that really wasn’t in the interest of its members or the democratic process. I think they are getting panicky. I get lots of calls about whether I have voted.
IR-2016-137:
Offshore Voluntary Compliance Efforts Top $10 Billion;
More Than 100,000 Taxpayers Come Back into Compliance.
…
Updated data shows 55,800 taxpayers have come into the Offshore Voluntary Disclosure Program (OVDP) to resolve their tax obligations, paying more than $9.9 billion in taxes, interest and penalties since 2009. In addition, another 48,000 taxpayers have made use of separate streamlined procedures to correct prior non-willful omissions and meet their federal tax obligations, paying approximately $450 million in taxes, interest and penalties.
Crikey. Amnesty, they call it.
A drop in the bucket compared to Apple, Google, GE, Boeing, the Donald et al.
It may not be significant to the US but I’ll bet it was significant to many of those who had to pay it. For some, maybe not, but for others, it must have been painful.
@Publius, re; “….Very interesting that Democrats over a year ago knew that their rank and file members were leaning towards Sanders and yet the Clinton campaign did absolutely nothing to attract the overseas American vote……”
They were confident that their dirty tricks would suffice to eliminate Sanders;

And remember that after issuing empty promises and designating
“Americans Living Overseas” as a “group of special interest” in the first term, the second time around, Obama didn’t even bother with the pretense that those ‘abroad’ were of any interest or significance. Instead, we got FATCA’d and repeatedly exhorted to come forward to be tormented in various iterations of the OVD/I/P.
This is what the Dems promised in 2008:
‘BARACK OBAMA: SUPPORTING AMERICANS LIVING OVERSEAS’
“….Obama understands the special concerns and issues of Americans living abroad and
will seek to address these as president.. ….”……As president, Obama will work to establish a direct dialogue with Americans abroad….”…Strengthen Economic Security for Americans Abroad: Barack Obama believes that the U.S. government should pay close attention to how American citizens are treated in the private sector while they live and work abroad. Our government must work to ensure that overseas Americans have every chance to compete on a level playing field, and he will work with Americans abroad to identify and understand problems they may face as a result of U.S. government policies……”…… “He welcomes a continued dialogue between the White House, the State Department, and citizens abroad in an Obama administration”……

And of course, as Secretary of State, Hilary would have been aware of the steep rise in renunciations and the rise in the fee State charged during her term https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hillary_Clinton%27s_tenure_as_Secretary_of_State
@Neill says “In addition, another 48,000 taxpayers have made use of separate streamlined procedures to correct prior non-willful omissions and meet their federal tax obligations, paying approximately $450 million in taxes, interest and penalties.”
That’s an average of about $9375 per minnow using streamlined. Add to that compliance costs (at least $750 for 3 years streamlined, and probably more), and that’s a significant amount for the average middle class budget.
Would be interesting to know how many opted to do more than 3 years (so they could exit the system quickly).
@ Karen
Would be interesting to know how many opted to do more than 3 years (so they could exit the system quickly).
Well, this will certainly assure them of a falling revenue source.
They shoot from the hip as usual with no concern for the future aftermath.
Imagine how much of these taxes, interest and penalties would have been pilfered out of other countries economies too.
@JC, thanks for your anti-FATCA tweet https://twitter.com/JCDoubleTaxed/status/789056269533315073 to offset the fawning over at https://twitter.com/hashtag/tellamericaitsgreat?src=hash , much appreciated.
That wiki entry reads like she did a good job. Maybe someone who writes better than me should “Correct The Record”
Don’t know where to put this. An interesting listen.
@ Charl
That’s a pretty good narrative, essentially advocating against authority. I know I would welcome a whole lot less authority right now. We just had a “smart” (smart as in stupid) meter attached to our house, despite our protests. Anyway, it doesn’t surprise me that Larken Rose (a key speaker at Anarchapulco 2016) won that video competition.

Oops, my mistake. It was someone called “GeoShifter” who won the contest. Larken Rose just posted his video.
