Media and Blog Articles
EmBee suggested that it would be good if there was a thread for new articles, so that people would be aware of where to comment. So, I created this permanent page. You could mention such articles in the comment stream for this page, or if I see one on another thread, I can copy the link to here. I’ll keep adding to the list, but not deleting, so we’ll end up having sort of a “bibliography” of FATCA/CBT articles. [Note: Some articles are not open for comments]
For more articles on FATCA, enter FATCA into Google then click on the link “more news for fatca” just below the most recent featured article.
Note also: JC suggests to see #FATCA on Twitter for latest breaking news. JC finds that is quite a good source and there even are some international articles that one may read using Google Translate.” Others may help certain tweets and articles remain in elevated position by retweeting them.
Be sure to read the comment stream for this thread — there are usually very recent articles mentioned there that aren’t on this list yet.

There is a definition of a tax haven – and Ireland doesn’t make that grade
http://www.independent.ie/business/irish/there-is-a-definition-of-a-tax-haven-and-ireland-doesnt-make-that-grade-35095264.html
While pub savants and panel guests on radio shows throw out phrases as if they were truth, the fact is that Ireland is far from being a tax haven. And Suzanne Kelly can prove it
October 2, Zero Hedge asks “Is America Becoming A Vast Debtor’s Prison?”
Expats and FATCA (and students and their loans) highlighted — though the emphasis is, again, on and as if those choosing to leave the USA is a new phenomenon. Additionally, nothing at all about the *Accidental American* and US Citizenship-Based Taxation (OR US Taxation-Based Citizenship).
A swissinfo.ch op-ed piece, by an ex-American resident in Switzerland, called “Did I ever really have a say?”:

@Innocente,
I liked how she talks about Elizabeth Warren being forward thinking. She still believes in the ideas that took her citizenship from her. Amazing.
Carol, I read the same article and my immediate thought is that someone in Congress will propose a law that the price tag to renounce/relinquish will be your portion of that debt.
Also I believe that because of the massive debt the USA has taken on that no former US Citizen will ever be safe. In this tipsy topsy world (US Centric) I can see folks with CLNs being brought back in the fold to pay their “fair share.”
@George, I share your fears, though I don’t think it will get that bad, especially if a former citizen has no U.S. assets. They might heavily tax U.S. social security payments someday though…
I’d like to send the IRS a mirror each time someone there yammers on about needing to clamp down on overseas tax cheats.

Of course nobody knows how many cheating IRS employees escaped scrutiny.
Thank you @Embee for that link to the article ‘500 IRS Employees Caught Not Paying Taxes in 2015, Only 5 Fired’ ( by Guillermo Jimenez | Sep 26, 2016) https://taxrevolution.us/500-irs-employees-caught-not-paying-taxes-only-5-fired/ which published the FOIA ‘answers’ from the IRS regarding how many IRS employees either didn’t file, filed late, and those who “understated” their taxable income when they did file – yet were not fired; https://www.scribd.com/document/322688218/IRS-Response-to-TRI-s-FOIA-Dated-April-7-2016-Case-No-F16103-0035#from_embed
I was just looking at the pile of papers I filed to the IRS showing I STILL owed the US a big fat zero – before I relinquished – in addition of course to those I routinely file to the CRA, my home country’s Revenue Agency, and it made me mad and nauseous all over again. And here I see proof that the IRS can’t be bothered to discipline its own employees – all US residents with a WILLFUL knowledge of their US tax duty and how to meet it (or get help from the IRS! – and yet, the US Treasury has the audacity to be extraterritorially extorting the legal local banking and asset information of those it deems UStaxablepersons’abroad’ using legally questionable IGAs and constitutionally questionable tactics.
What willfully disingenuous and hypocritical bastards. Timmy the Tax Cheat Geithner https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Timothy_Geithner and all the others knew of the noncompliance from within the IRS, plus that of US politicians and IRS contractors https://www.treasury.gov/tigta/auditreports/2016reports/201610049fr.pdf , and aides in the White House http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/washington/2010/09/congress-taxes-irs.html http://www.politifact.com/ohio/statements/2013/apr/03/blog-posting/bloggers-say-obama-aides-are-delinquent-their-taxe/ http://nypost.com/2013/03/12/the-fair-share-white-house/ , and other federal employees http://www.pbs.org/newshour/rundown/irs-says-305000-federal-workers-retirees-owe-3-5-billion-back-taxes/ yet has the arrogance to issue threats against people living entirely outside the borders of the US.
@Badger, “yet has the arrogance to issue threats against people living entirely outside the borders of the US.”
Sorry you need to be corrected, I can not let stand your last comment.
It should read; “yet has the arrogance to issue threats against people living entirely outside the borders of the US who do not even consider themselves to be US Citizens nor desire any of the so called benefits of such foreign (USA) citizenship.”
Yes, US Citizenship has become the misadvertised online purchase where the return postage is far greater than the price you originally spent.

FATCA could undermine US-Asia financial relations: Analysts

@George, AND, the US issues threats against people living outside its borders who even it acknowledges are NOT UStaxablepersons. I speak of ALL the citizens and taxpayers and accountholders of every non-US country in the world and their financial systems, who the US makes extortive threats against – in terms of potentially denying access to US markets and in terms of the 30 % withholding on their local FIs, and forcing them to pay via their own local taxes and increased local banking fees for the pleasure of being USFATCAhostages forever and ever and betraying their own country and fellow citizens and residents. The cost to our own country has never been calculated, ex.’

and as the late previous CONservative Finance Minister Flaherty initially stated publicly in the media – before he underwent a remarkable 360 degree conversion and aboutface;
“…to rigidly impose FATCA on our citizens and financial institutions would not accomplish anything except waste resources on all sides……..

Maclean’s article: Anti-Trump activists set sights on recruiting American ex-pats
excerpt:
An activist organization’s campaign to keep Donald Trump out of the White House is spilling across the border into Canada as the group ramps up efforts to convince U.S. voters living abroad to cast ballots during next month’s presidential election.
More than a dozen people gathered in front of Trump Tower in downtown Vancouver on Wednesday afternoon waving anti-Trump placards and trying to persuade American expatriates to register to vote and to defeat the Republican candidate for president
Heard on CBC this morning…. Bernie Sanders has been pressured into rousing his followers to support Hillary.
What was Bernie’s pitch to get them behind her?
The clip CBC played had him saying, “There’s only one candidate who will make the rich pay their fair share of taxes”.
Any expat paying attention will know what that’s code for.
Pick your poison.

Moderators..Is there any way to get a post started on this? There is an opportunity to vote for a question to be asked to the presidential candidates, but it has to be in the top 30 ranking for most voted. One of the questions is about fatca and rbt. Can we get every Brocker and his family to vote? All you need is a valid email and a US zip code. Use any zip code …maybe of a family member still living there. Otherwise…use one of these…90012 , 90020 , 94114 , 94122 , 84115 , 84101

@ 2terrified2sleep
This has come up several times at Brock in the past week in various threads. I was going to do another appeal today but you beat me to it. I’ll just add that even though the FATCA/RBT question stands no chance of making it into the top 30, it’s still worthwhile to vote for it because it represents our cause and deserves our support. The FATCA/RBT question is currently at 757 votes, making it #22 on Trending Now and #17 on Most Votes under the Taxes and Budget category. That at leasy puts it on the first pages there. Admins have listed this opportunity for all of us to take some online action here:

This was on the U.K. news a few days ago, but I don’t see it mentioned here, so I’m posting. The IRS seems to have had a big data leak of people who owe it money and Indian shakedown artists have been using it to take advantage of tax defaulters. There may be other international operations: “Thane police superintendent Mahesh Patil told BBC Hindi that the investigation could open up cases from other countries as well.”

So Israel gets an extension. Trinidad got an extension. Canada fell all over itself to comply.

Still no Warning Sticker on the RESP (or the RDSP), Canadian registered accounts. Anyone who may be *US tainted* should proceed with caution and good advice.
CBC News, October 8, 2016: “RESPs: free money from government that half of Canadians don’t ask for Program sees Ottawa kick in at least an extra 20% toward the cost of paying for education”
Calgary: The Canadian government probably recognizes that to openly advertise the fact that some of its registered plans are not suitable for Canadians with US connections would be openly admitting that their government discriminates against its citizens of US origin.
Out of the frying pan and into the fire– policy change under the new and more compassionate Trudeau Liberal government. This makes me sick.
