Media and Blog Articles
EmBee suggested that it would be good if there was a thread for new articles, so that people would be aware of where to comment. So, I created this permanent page. You could mention such articles in the comment stream for this page, or if I see one on another thread, I can copy the link to here. I’ll keep adding to the list, but not deleting, so we’ll end up having sort of a “bibliography” of FATCA/CBT articles. [Note: Some articles are not open for comments]
For more articles on FATCA, enter FATCA into Google then click on the link “more news for fatca” just below the most recent featured article.
Note also: JC suggests to see #FATCA on Twitter for latest breaking news. JC finds that is quite a good source and there even are some international articles that one may read using Google Translate.” Others may help certain tweets and articles remain in elevated position by retweeting them.
Be sure to read the comment stream for this thread — there are usually very recent articles mentioned there that aren’t on this list yet.

@Polly
The FVAP one was a study they did of U.S. citizens abroad, reasons for being abroad, etc. Thought the data might be of interest to people. That’s all.
I think I have seen the campaign to get U.S. citizens in the U.K. to vote (not the government one, but one that was clearly anti-Trump). I am not sure why they think U.S. citizens abroad are going to be enthusiastic about Clinton in the general election when they picked Bernie in the Democratic primary. The under the line comments on that campaign are really mixed.
http://www.internationalinvestment.net/other/us-political-parties-target-expats-prez-campaign-heads-final-weeks/
“……..As reported, http://www.internationalinvestment.net/products/american-expat-group-calls-country-fatca-exemption/ the American Citizens Abroad in August wrote to the presidential candidates in order to obtain their official stance on eight key issues of concern to expats. In addition to their stance with respect to the “same country exemption” amendment for FATCA, the candidates were asked what their positions were with respect to a proposal that the US federal tax regime be changed to a residence-based system, “like every one of the 50 states, and…virtually every other country in the world”, and how they feel about certain proposed changes to the so-called Foreign Bank Account Reporting requirements which, like FATCA, have caused considerable difficulty for many expats.
An ACA spokesperson told International Investment that it has “not heard back from the candidates” with respect to its letter, https://www.americansabroad.org/media/files/files/65318833/aca-letter-to-hillary-for-america-2016-08-25.pdf but added that “we will be following up with their offices this week to try and get a response”…”
So it is almost October and none of the candidates responded to the concerns of expats as expressed in the ACA letter?
Wow. You would have thought it wouldn’t have taken 6 years to almost get a plan to worry about it’s side effects. I won’t hold my breath. Obama wants cash and by definition anyone with cash is somebody who should pay to give to that set of people that’s ever growing who need it more than you do.

A Brocker wonders:
Any opinions, legal or layperson?
@calgary411, How do these accounts get treated as foreign accounts by the USG?
So the article behind this is rather good. It looks like FATCA anticipated foreign pensions and chose to make individuals still report them despite the fact that there are tax exempt in many cases.
Clearly all about fines.

Still open for comments (some good ones already -THANKS!);
‘Lawmaker seeks to investigate Obama’s foreign tax compliance law’
Kat Lucero, The Hill
http://thehill.com/policy/finance/298130-lawmaker-seeks-to-investigate-obamas-foreign-tax-compliance-law
“.The House Oversight and Government Reform Committee is currently planning to hold a FATCA-related hearing, but it is not yet on the schedule, according to Meadows’ spokesperson. The lawmaker is chairman of the committee’s Government Operations Subcommittee. He said the hearing is likely to take place after Congress returns from the November elections.
Meadows didn’t provide more details about the hearing, but his announcement follows the Sept. 7 release of his own bill that would repeal FATCA and other individual reporting requirements (H.R. 5935), that violate “Fourth Amendment privacy rights,” according to a press release.
The issue with privacy rights stem from the reporting requirements for foreign financial institutions. Currently, there are 63 active IGAs, but other countries with similar or pending bilateral agreements with the Treasury Department will have to now comply to a new set of IRS rules by the end of this year, according to a Congressional Research Service report dated the same day Meadows released his bill.
H.R. 5935 is “designed to hopefully give us still some accountability and transparency, but yet at the same time not make doing business with American citizens not the most difficult in the banking world,” Meadows said.
The bill is a result of the “far reaching implications of some of the regulations in the banking industry from a foreign perspective,” he added. ….”……
Crowing about their mention:

How do such exploited *children of Native Canadians* get rid of their US taint if they so wish?
CBC News, September 28, 2016 – – “Indigenous children for sale: The money behind the Sixties Scoop – Adoptive U.S. parents paid thousands for Indigenous Manitoba children”
Which country owns this criminal act?
Some ethical government officials of countries order differently than other weak countries priorities that are important for the well-being of the people of their country — the people they work for and on behalf of.
https://www.guardian.co.tt/news/2016-09-28/kamla-don%E2%80%99t-be-distracted-fatca-carmona-issues
“Overriding a presidential veto is something we don’t take lightly, but it was important in this case that the families of the victims of 9/11 be allowed to pursue justice, even if that pursuit causes some diplomatic discomforts,” said Sen. Chuck Schumer, a chief sponsor of the bill.
…………
“Despite reversing Obama’s decision, a bipartisan group of 28 senators led by Bob Corker suggested that defects in the bill could open a legal Pandora’s box, triggering lawsuits from people in other countries seeking redress for injuries or deaths caused by military actions in which the U.S. may have had a role.”
http://www.cbc.ca/news/world/911-saudi-veto-1.3783312
Must seeking redress be limited to injuries or death due to military action only? Hmm.
I’d love to see unintended consequences of their own laws bite the US government in the ass
@Calgary411
That article about kidnapped and sold indigenous Canadians mentions that many wish to be reunited with their families in Canada. The Canadian IGA will see to it that they again are treated as 2nd-class Canadians when returning home.
Regarding the Kat Lucero article- I tried to sign in but my passwords are not working.
SOMEBODY tell those who tout about tax evaders that America is the biggest tax haven of them all!
It galled me to no end that there this sentence that so much money had been spent already so FATCA has to stay? SAY WHAT? Why not get the missing money from those hidden companies in Delaware?!
PISS ME OFF.
Excellent comments at the Lucero article! Great work, swat team!
Well not much changes. After they override the Obama veto they start to worry that they may affect Americans abroad. You would have kind of expected them to think about all this stuff before they even wrote the law.
Obviously I am gagging uncontrollably to be on the same side as Obama but he looks right in this case.

I am pretty sure they would know this guy was a US citizen if he hadn’t filed his FBAR and had some money in Canada.

@Neill
That was the first thing I thought of concerning this issue- Obama is right. In the same vein- what would America say if everybody taxed by citizenship and american residents were paying taxes to other countries? It is all american exceptionalism and such a spectacle of pathological narcissism. Yes- WE can.
I should add: Yes WE can but you cannot.
@Polly
Obama’s veto acknowledges fairness with other nations, something Congress cares nothing about.
@Bubblebustin
Is it fairness? Or fear of similar law suits against America?
@Polly @Bubblebustin
By opening this door… other countries can sue the US for their crimes…. how many innocents were killed in the name of *terrorists* by the US
As always… US thinks they are the only victims around… They also forgot… there are terrorists who are US citizens… there is a theory that the US supplies… money… arms… training… to groups they think will rule foreign gov’ts better then what is there… Ukraine comes to mind…

good place to confirm what Max Reed is writing about – that prior to 2004, with no use of U.S. benefits, an expatriating act (should be seen as) was enough to lose citizenship with no tax consequences. A chance to really re-enforce/ present our view………..courtesy of course, of John Richardson
