Media and Blog Articles
EmBee suggested that it would be good if there was a thread for new articles, so that people would be aware of where to comment. So, I created this permanent page. You could mention such articles in the comment stream for this page, or if I see one on another thread, I can copy the link to here. I’ll keep adding to the list, but not deleting, so we’ll end up having sort of a “bibliography” of FATCA/CBT articles. [Note: Some articles are not open for comments]
For more articles on FATCA, enter FATCA into Google then click on the link “more news for fatca” just below the most recent featured article.
Note also: JC suggests to see #FATCA on Twitter for latest breaking news. JC finds that is quite a good source and there even are some international articles that one may read using Google Translate.” Others may help certain tweets and articles remain in elevated position by retweeting them.
Be sure to read the comment stream for this thread — there are usually very recent articles mentioned there that aren’t on this list yet.

US citizens renouncing because of tax laws affecting Australian superannuation by Julie Power

Mr. A.: Thanks for your thoughts regarding crossing the border. Unfortunately, my situation is a bit more complicated. I *did* get a U.S. passport which has since expired. I would be a fool to renew it for obvious reasons (not that it matters since my goose is already cooked). There is no way they will let me in with my Canadian passport now. They retain border crossing info for 15 years so I have another 10 to go.
When I picked up my passport at the U.S. consulate years ago the official was very careful to explain that I must be very careful about obeying U.S. law while in the U.S. because, under international law, the Canadian government could not help me were I to get into trouble in the United States. Many years later I learned that I am in violation of a law that I didn’t know existed and which I refuse to obey. I refuse to pay a dime to a government of a country in which I do not live and that does not serve me in the least.
This is why I really and truly cannot set foot in the United States until there is an outright pardon issued for people like me. Actually, I’m looking for a presidential apology but I’ll settle for a pardon!
Muzzled no more. I believe you are mistaken. From our experience, you should be perfectly alright crossing with your Can. passport. (That is if you should wish to visit). What the consul told you years ago was simply the party line standard boilerplate.
@Ellen D Excellent article!
It should have also mentioned the a primary home sale profit in AU- which AU does not tax, but the US considers taxable. That, is another HUGE issue, in addition to the “no bank accounts for those of you with “US taint”.
I think, most of all, it’s outright “autonomy piracy” of the USA to attempt to extort/usurp other countries laws in order to extract income it has no true claim to.
@Ellen D – thanks for posting the link!
@Jane – yes there are several aspects that she could have included (home sales, PFICs, NIIT), but her word limit was pretty tight. As it was, the print version was shorter than the online version. I’m just glad to have any publicity on this issue. Super is likely to be the item that garners the most attention and sympathy from the general public.
I’ve had three people contact me outside of Facebook and the website to share their story and encourage my efforts. And about 200 have clicked through to the website from the SMH article today.
@Jane & Karen
As an unemployed noncompliant tax criminal I thought more people should read the article.
@MuzzledNoMore
I’m sorry to hear about your previous US passport, but I think that I agee with DoD in that you would still be OK crossing with your Canadian passport. Until we get a report that a Canadian “US Person” has actually been denied US entry, I think that the chances are excellent that you would be pleasantly surprised and allowed entry. Maybe some questions and hassling/warning as some have experienced, but then (highly probable) entry. Be courteous and respectful, say as little as possible, but firmly hold your position that you are a Canadian, period. You are a law-abiding citizen, and I think that their real concern is true illegal activity.
For whatever reason, they are simply not enforcing that “US citizen needs US passport for US entry/exit” law on Canadians. Of course that could suddenly change tomorrow, but it seems unlikely in the near term.
@Deckard1138
Interesting anecdote! It boils down to: Is it not a fundamental human right that citizenship should be consensual between the nation and the individual?
@Mr A
The information that I once got from a border guard is that without a US passport you are considered to be entering under a visitor’s visa.
@Bubblebustin
Yes, I remember reading your post about that, and I found it helpful. It’s exactly how I want them to treat me – like any other Canadian.

Jack Lew was on CNBC this morning talking about his WSJ article and other stuff.
He made the statement that the money being taxed by the EU is ‘American Income’. That tells you all you need to know about this administration.
We know the money in question was earned in other countries, We know this because it fell under the tax rules of Ireland. Ireland didn’t tax it enough according to the EU. America is one of the few countries to try and tax the foreign profits of it’s companies.
So if your American (company or person) your income belongs to America. Corporations have a better hope of getting this changed than individuals. They already have the ability to defer the charges for example.
The chances of getting CBT are minuscule with their current attitude.

Devastating news about the Israeli matter. The Israeli judge’s decision must certainly influence how Mr. Arvay plans to prosecute our case in Canada. In my opinion, it has certainly made his job more difficult. Not a good day for us, I’m afraid.

Robert Reich says we should take away citizen ship from companies. Clearly he hasn’t noticed that they and a bunch of American citizens really want a cheap way out.
Something tells me when he says taking away he really means take away and fine and tax like hell just before they go.

Keith Redmond:
I have been asked to testify at a US Congressional hearing on behalf of 9 million disenfranchised Americans living overseas plus green card holders living overseas plus Accidental Americans. I am working with a team in establishing the framework for the hearing and I am securing witnesses who have been damaged by FATCA (Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act) and by the US practice of Citizenship Based Taxation (CBT). We are waiting on the date which will be announced shortly.
