Media and Blog Articles
EmBee suggested that it would be good if there was a thread for new articles, so that people would be aware of where to comment. So, I created this permanent page. You could mention such articles in the comment stream for this page, or if I see one on another thread, I can copy the link to here. I’ll keep adding to the list, but not deleting, so we’ll end up having sort of a “bibliography” of FATCA/CBT articles. [Note: Some articles are not open for comments]
For more articles on FATCA, enter FATCA into Google then click on the link “more news for fatca” just below the most recent featured article.
Note also: JC suggests to see #FATCA on Twitter for latest breaking news. JC finds that is quite a good source and there even are some international articles that one may read using Google Translate.” Others may help certain tweets and articles remain in elevated position by retweeting them.
Be sure to read the comment stream for this thread — there are usually very recent articles mentioned there that aren’t on this list yet.

FATCA has Americans renouncing citizenship, tax lawyer says
Calgary tax lawyer says the number of Americans giving up their citizenship is increasing
http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/calgary/facta-has-americans-giving-up-citizenship-1.3604792
@Tom, that “Calgary lawyer” is a US tax lawyer who exported himself to Canada when the US extraterritorial tax and FBAR / OVDI compliance gold rush started in 2011. Where better to go when >1 million Canadians had the US taint? Close enough to fly home to the US regularly, and still keep up those US affiliations.
He and the firm he ended up with use media stories to shill for clients (he posted here at the beginning too). They have really profited and expanded because of the US FBAR/FATCA jihad, and have been very clever with their ability to get media placement, and he uses Twitter as well in order to publicize their free seminars all over Canada in order to hook new business. They didn’t originally run seminars highlighting US citizenship renunciation (and I can tell you firsthand that he wasn’t supportive of renunciation/relinquishment, or of ‘depriving’ our children of their potential to access the gold paved streets of the US someday if they could possibly have inherited the US status from us).
Now they have found that there is another vein of compliance gold in them thar Canadian hills, and are tapping into the vein of those coming to know (and increasingly to fear and dread) of their US extraterritorial CBT, FBAR and FATCA problems, and to target them (at a very very high cost) for renunciation related compliance services.
Just underscoring that the article is basically another one of their adverts disguised as a CBC ‘news’ story.
And the very same lawyer appeared before Canada’s parliament to tell Canadians that they should support and enforce FATCA via the IGA. And who attended the last ADCS hearing in the company of our foes on the other side of the ADCS lawsuit. He and his business partner have pro-actively denigrated our efforts and opposition to US extraterritorial CBT, FBAR and FATCA in public media statements and postings on their company’s website.
Tragic that this is how the CBC chooses to cover the issue.
CBC should be ashamed of themselves. In the story above, they refer to “..According to the U.S. State Department there are about 7 million U.S. citizens who live outside the country. It’s estimated that between 700,000 and 2 million live in Canada…” without pointing out that those are CANADIANS, many born in Canada, or are accidentals like Gwen and Ginny, born on short stays in the US to Canadian parents, or like those in Stanstead QC or many other border communities who routinely sent Canadian mothers to US border hospitals to give birth.
The article gives the impression that those affected are only or primarily AMERICANS recently residing in Canada rather than Canadians. And the reference to their business implies that there is profit to be made if they comply. What about those PFIC rules, FATCA, the cost to Canadian taxpayers, the CRA and other government funds shelled out to enforce US tax law, etc.? Absolutely no mention of the lineup to renounce, the 2350 USD fee, etc.
The CBC let itself be played by a US tax lawyer doing targeted product placement in Canada’s publicly taxpayer funded media outlet.
@ badger
Well said. It was Roy Berg (Canada’s leading compliance condor) I had specifically in mind when I wrote the “Snowbird” parody last year.
Beneath the FATCA mantle cold and mean
The condor lies awaiting
For new clients to be seen
The condor sings the song he always sings
And speaks to them of taxes
And the penalties they bring
The rest of it is here …

@Embee, thanks for that – laughed again – always enjoy your parodies, which cut right to the heart of the matter. Got to collect them somewhere, cause I always appreciate being reminded of them and enjoy all over again.
How do you do it?
May the condor have its wings clipped when the ADCS lawsuit wins. Hope he returns to the US homeland and stops profiting off our pain, anxiety and fear – and actively supporting the forces of evil who seek to enforce and enhance US extraterritorial reach via FATCA and FBAR – and insulting us on our own home soil in Canada. I know firsthand that he was not supportive of renunciation or relinquishment before. But, of course, there is the gold calling out in them thar hills……
@Badger @Embee
Your great comments would put a smile on my face if I wasn’t so ANNOYED with the CBC.
On Thursday, I tried to engage the CBC’s Early Edition producer before Roy Berg’s associate, Alexander Marino made his pitch. It seems Berg has discovered another vein of gold in them thar hills, namely renunciations:

One positive thing I will say about the CBC interview: our issue is on the airwaves once again. If *we* cannot *get* the issue on the airwaves in our own way, we must take the opportunity presented by those who have been successful in doing so. We can’t buy this kind of advertising for our cause even if Mr. Marino did not state things in the way we would have.
If any Brockers are in the Vancouver area this morning they might want to head on down to Mr. Marino’s presentation and stand outside with some quickly produced leaflets directing attendees to visit IBS or Citizenship Solutions for further information before taking any action.
Just a thought.
@Muzzled
I am pretty certain the program was Saturday morning.
I have written to the authors of the article as well as the host and producer of the radio show.
Fingers crossed xxxxx
Thanks, Trish.

Saw this citizenship renunciation reasons video on Twitter. It references 2014 statistics and has a 2015 copy write. Maybe all you saw it. I must have missed. Generally fairly good.

It looks like Berg is trying to use it to promote his free seminar and services.
Oops! Sorry I had the wrong date for that seminar. My apologies!
