Media and Blog Articles
EmBee suggested that it would be good if there was a thread for new articles, so that people would be aware of where to comment. So, I created this permanent page. You could mention such articles in the comment stream for this page, or if I see one on another thread, I can copy the link to here. I’ll keep adding to the list, but not deleting, so we’ll end up having sort of a “bibliography” of FATCA/CBT articles. [Note: Some articles are not open for comments]
For more articles on FATCA, enter FATCA into Google then click on the link “more news for fatca” just below the most recent featured article.
Note also: JC suggests to see #FATCA on Twitter for latest breaking news. JC finds that is quite a good source and there even are some international articles that one may read using Google Translate.” Others may help certain tweets and articles remain in elevated position by retweeting them.
Be sure to read the comment stream for this thread — there are usually very recent articles mentioned there that aren’t on this list yet.

@Charl
People in Paris that were americans got turned away from the US Embassy when they needed safety after the bombing…. There was another instance americans needed help to leave… US did nothing… other countries got them out… US gov’t wants every dime from US persons… citizens or not… Yet if they need embassy help… they may help an American for a price… all others… sucks to be u… go to your home embassy for help but leave your wallets….
@USFP
I know! It is unfortunate USC actually believe this is true and is most often the singular threat they throw at those Benedict Arnolds. “Just wait till the shit hits the fan and you are in trouble” is often stated. So for this remote possibility one must be an eternal tax slave. They just make absolutely NO sense!
This is a good one, certainly describes everyone in the IBS community I’m sure:
http://www.nestmann.com/could-you-be-a-traitor-to-your-country?
“Congressman Sam Gibbons (D-FL), referring to expatriates, spoke of “the despicable act of renouncing allegiance to the United States.” Neil Abercrombie (D-HI), described expatriates as “Benedict Arnolds who would sell out their citizenship, sell out their country in order to maintain their wealth.”
Re: Netstmann article. There was complaint on Facebook that comments were not being accepted. I put one in and can see it on my computer (with uptick from @Charl). That is the only one I see. Yet on my phone I don’t see mine but can see a comment from EmNotEx.
@ JC
Very strange … on my computer I see only my comment (EmNotEx), no others. I’d like to read yours.
@EmBee – I have canned responses. I called that one Berlin Wall 2. Has plugs for Isaac Brock and citizenshiptaxation.ca, and Facebook Citizenship Taxation and American Expatriots Groups.
@JC and EmBee
Oddly, that article seems to have two different links. Follow the link above and you get the “EmNotEx” comment, and follow the link from this Facebook post: https://www.facebook.com/groups/AmericanExpatriates/permalink/602069596625783/ and you get the “DoubleTaxed” comment.
Or at least that’s what I get – PC or phone doesn’t seem to matter.
https://www.theyucatantimes.com/2016/05/u-s-non-participation-in-the-common-reporting-standard-crs-will-be-a-challenge/
This article neatly outlines the blowback facing the US once the OECD’s Common Reporting Standard (CRS) is implemented. Between its lack of FATCA reciprocity and its non-participation in CRS, oh-so-exceptional tax haven America is about to get a taste of its own medicine (which its diaspora already knows well): being treated as pariahs by the international banking and investment communities. Karma.
@ Karen and JC
Using that link from Facebook I see JC’s comment and a new one from John Richardson (I upticked both). No EmNotEx.
U.S. Department of Justice Gets Its 1st FATCA Conviction!
DoJ announced on May 9, 2016, that Gregg R. Mulholland, a dual U.S. and Canadian citizen of San Juan Capistrano, California and Vancouver, Canada, Age: 46 and secret owner of Legacy Global Markets S.A. (Legacy), an offshore broker-dealer and investment management company based in Panama City, Panama, and Belize City, Belize, pleaded guilty to money laundering conspiracy for fraudulently manipulating the stocks of more than 40 U.S. publicly-traded companies and then laundering more than $250 million in profits through at least five offshore law firms.[…]
The thumbnail description above came in an email from TacConnections. But when you click on the embedded links, they come up as ‘Article not found.”?????
It appears that FATCA had little to do with this conviction. The case was brought by the SEC and the conviction was for securities fraud and money laundering.

https://www.conservativereview.com/commentary/2016/05/the-real-story-behind-rand-pauls-challenge-to-obamas-insane-treaties
@Eric
There are a few countries that consider the renunciation of foreign citizenships as part of the U.S. citizenship ceremony to be void (their argument is that this was done under duress). Many countries lose a lot of their best people to the U.S. and don’t want to close the door to their return.
Just landed my “Berlin Wall II” in the comment section of the conservativeview article.

RE: the Nestmann article titled “Could you be a traitor to your country?” … IT’S GONE!
Somebody on Quora swearing about the need to pay US taxes while living in Australia:

@Neill
His term for CBT as an “ongoing exit penalty” is a keeper.

Or more straightforwardly, someone cut-n-pasted it onto a webforum:

“Amanda Knox, the American cleared of murdering Meredith Kercher, has taken Italy to the European Court of Human Rights.”
Have our Europeans thought of taking FATCA to European Court of Human RIghts?
FATCA is not a Party to the Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms, and neither is the US.
RE: The Nestmann article titled “Could you be a traitor to your country?
It’s back up again in both locations on Nestmann’s site.
A lot of topic, but perhaps a glimpse into the personality of our new, hot Canadian PM:

Prime Minister Justin Threwblow might just get the public more interested in the what goes on down there. Maybe he will get his own reality show. Too bad “House” has been taken.
