Media and Blog Articles
EmBee suggested that it would be good if there was a thread for new articles, so that people would be aware of where to comment. So, I created this permanent page. You could mention such articles in the comment stream for this page, or if I see one on another thread, I can copy the link to here. I’ll keep adding to the list, but not deleting, so we’ll end up having sort of a “bibliography” of FATCA/CBT articles. [Note: Some articles are not open for comments]
For more articles on FATCA, enter FATCA into Google then click on the link “more news for fatca” just below the most recent featured article.
Note also: JC suggests to see #FATCA on Twitter for latest breaking news. JC finds that is quite a good source and there even are some international articles that one may read using Google Translate.” Others may help certain tweets and articles remain in elevated position by retweeting them.
Be sure to read the comment stream for this thread — there are usually very recent articles mentioned there that aren’t on this list yet.

The Conversation article that Neill linked (https://theconversation.com/why-europes-new-tax-initiative-is-a-big-deal-57897) is open for comments. I’ve put one up. I’m sure there’s no way to “educate” the author, but perhaps comments will help other readers critically question the author’s unabashed praise of FATCA.
@KAren
What the article is referring to, is that European nations are discussing no longer having shell companies. The information to be accessible is: who owns this company? But it would be good if that also applied to Delaware.
@Polly
Certainly it would help for corporations to be more transparent. But to praise FATCA, as the article does, without at least acknowledging the harm FATCA does to individuals presents an incomplete picture.
IMO, this is one of the problems with the focus on tax evasion in the wake of the Panama Papers story. The focus is on multinationals and HNW individuals. If minnows are caught by the rules meant to catch whales it is dismissed as unfortunate collateral damage.
Fortune are morons. They don’t realize the social security trust fund are not assets at all. They are just pieces of paper. They are not even marketable securities. They are just a number in a ledger:

@Karen
Of course. That is a given for us. FATCA is always praised like that though, isn’t it? But I just wanted to point out that this is what they were discussing: getting rid of nameless companies. That should affect Delaware, South Dakota and Wyoming too. But somehow we all get the feeling that America won`t allow that to happen- dont we? Those states which are making barrels of money with this kind of tax evasion would balk at any change to their revenues, and the federal government wont change that either.
@Calgary411 Still requesting IBS feature. Unless I am missing something this has not really been covered here.

JC,
Will see if there is video to post on Monday — there was none yesterday. Both EmBee and I have sent emails asking when the video will be available on the ParlVu site.

@Calgary411. I did see that re video transcript after my post.
Elizabeth Thompson reports on the sorry state of the protection of privacy for Canadians (not to mention, now, the privacy of those defined as *US citizens who happen to abide in Canada*?)…
iPolitics, Elizabeth Thompson, April 17, 2016: Reporting of government privacy breaches varies widely
Re: Elizabeth Thompson’s April 17 article: Is it any wonder our community is up in arms about the transfer of our data to the IRS via the CRA? There is no one minding the store at the CRA, a state of affairs that was certainly confirmed while watching the Ethics Committee meeting.
We should have a global wealth tax because FATCA is great and a new way to get that tax from campaniles. Not a thought about why it’s a mess already and why all this stuff will make it much worse:

Not sure what this is about but changes to FATCA and reporting of companies:
https://www.treasury.gov/press-center/press-releases/Pages/jl0428.aspx
Tax evasion and tax avoidance hurt government budgets, reduce the equity of our tax systems and hinder global growth. The effective implementation of international standards is a key issue for the United States. To combat the misuse of companies, we are finalizing a rulemaking that would require financial institutions to identify the beneficial owners of new customers that are companies. In addition, we are about to propose a regulation that would require the beneficial owners of single-member limited liability companies to identify themselves to the Internal Revenue Service, thus closing a loophole that some have been able to exploit. We fully support the call for all countries to automatically exchange financial account information. The United States led the world in automatic exchange with the enactment of FATCA in 2010. We also are committed to implementing the OECD/G-20 BEPS project, including the requirement that large multinationals report to tax authorities certain financial and tax information on a country by country basis.

Still not up on ParlVu this morning, but I have this reply so will keep checking the site:
JC,

Thanks @JC for alerting us https://twitter.com/JCDoubleTaxed/status/721155736013709313 to the tweet from MP and Green Party leader Elizabeth May that;

Dear President Obama, I’m A Baby Not A Tax Cheat / Robert W. Wood

Great find, Charl! Good for Robert Wood for printing Lynne’s fabulous Baby Elle letter! Shame on TD bank, shame on the Fiberal government (love it, Lynne!) and shame on the USA for prolonging the insanity of CBT.
Can anyone suggest a way of reading the Wood article other than by going to Forbes? That requires cookies, which I try to avoid. Or can someone pull out the important text and post it? Thanks.
