Media and Blog Articles
EmBee suggested that it would be good if there was a thread for new articles, so that people would be aware of where to comment. So, I created this permanent page. You could mention such articles in the comment stream for this page, or if I see one on another thread, I can copy the link to here. I’ll keep adding to the list, but not deleting, so we’ll end up having sort of a “bibliography” of FATCA/CBT articles. [Note: Some articles are not open for comments]
For more articles on FATCA, enter FATCA into Google then click on the link “more news for fatca” just below the most recent featured article.
Note also: JC suggests to see #FATCA on Twitter for latest breaking news. JC finds that is quite a good source and there even are some international articles that one may read using Google Translate.” Others may help certain tweets and articles remain in elevated position by retweeting them.
Be sure to read the comment stream for this thread — there are usually very recent articles mentioned there that aren’t on this list yet.

FATCA Harm Story from Australia. @StressedinAus says her US person husband got “the FATCA letter” and this lead to that which lead through Streamlined!

Editorial – as published in bubblebustin’s local paper today:
@Calgary411 I have not followed all the posts in regards to the extra witnesses.
Excellent post by Bubblebustin
Consideration for encore performance.
* Put FATCA in title
* Mention message boards of Isaac Brock Society. I am not thinking people would read it and not “snap” say this is for me. There is a bit of engagement and further information search required.
* I believe there was some posts saying that the requirement is less than what one might imagine of being infront of the court.
The call to action seems to indicate that Bubblebustin is a contact person – right?
*
@JC
Thanks. I’m hoping their reporter will call me back for an interview where I can bring up your points. As in most articles, the writer doesn’t get to pick the title. I left it up to the editor to determine what in my letter would get (and keep) the reader’s attention. They did a decent job, although I would have changed a word here and there for clarity had I been allowed the time or opportunity (they had a deadline). Strike while the iron’s hot, I say!
Most of all, I hope that it will generate witnesses!
@Neill
Thanks for pointing out that the treaty will still cover the pension if the government puts the tax on at the front end. I had thought about rejoining ACA to go to a tax talk, but company hosting it changed the topic to dealing with the non-dom rules .

This story IMO should be tweeted and shared far and wide on social media. Ludicrous!
Obama crows about how much he has done for you:

Winnipeg Free Press article on the privacy commissioners statement yesterday. I can’t get past the paywall but in print it says “The federal privacy watchdog warns there is confusion about a Canada-U.S. deal aimed at zeroing in on tax cheats north of the border.”

@Cheryl
If you google the phrase, the story comes up from the Toronto Metro.
Thanks @Publius. Here it is on CTV news.
The commissioner said he has asked Canada’s revenue agency for an explanation. He also wants to know:
-How many accounts under US $50,000 have been reported by institutions to date, resulting in the
information being passed to the U.S.;
-Clarification as to why the first round of records sent to the U.S. was bigger than originally estimated;
Details on what level of review the revenue agency applies to records transferred to the U.S.;
The number of records related to Canadians the agency has received from the Internal Revenue Service as part of reciprocal sharing provisions.

ON RECEIVING MY CERTIFICATE OF LOSS OF NATIONALITY:
“The best analogy I’ve been able to find is that renouncing citizenship is like a divorce. I’m talking about the kind of divorce where you still love the person, but you know that he/she is just not good for you. Regretfully, you file for divorce.”

Everybody’s different I guess. I waved it in the air and opened the champagne. 🙂
FATCA is just great and it should have been done ages ago:
http://theconversation.com/why-europes-new-tax-initiative-is-a-big-deal-57897
You know half way through reading this I had to stop. I am just sick of this garbage.
@Cheryl
I completely agree with you. Here’s another example of the author’s tone-deaf analysis of FATCA:
http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/1758-5899.12135/abstract
I would put this guy right up there with Michael Kirsch as stellar examples of so-called academics who understand absolutely nothing about FATCA and CBT, and even less about the true nature of tax havens and how the United States itself is the most aggressive and largest tax haven of them all. On the contrary, the line should correctly read:
“The US is, in particular, in flexing its muscles attempting to ensure that the various mechanisms used to combat tax evasion and perpetrated through the OECD have little impact on its ‘back yard’.”
These supposedly learned professors are nothing more than shills for the compliance industry and mouthpieces for the Orwellian language of the IRS and the US Government.
I wish we could get at the very very soft underbelly of the great and exceptional rogue nation to our south somehow. I wish we could get really angry and have a huge demonstration in Ottawa at Parliament and spill over to the U.S. embassy and burn flags & passports and make it impossible for everyone to ignore us anymore. This assault on Canadian citizens and others around the world is not the end….it is just the beginning. May God help us.
That does have an appeal, Cheryl, but Canadians are much too polite for that. We prefer our aggression to be passive.
Sorry about the rant. Honestly I don’t know how you all who have been doing this since before 2010 are still sane. More power to you.
I live in America and the arrogance of it’s laws astounds me. I let people know on a regular basis that the country that has the most freedom as an exit tax and how they can never escape the IRS. I was explaining to somebody today how Americans can’t eat many foods that the rest of the world can eat. Americans can’t buy a bunch of stuff the rest of the world can. You might not want to do these things but that’s different from it being illegal.
I believe in American exceptionalism but not the ‘god bless America’ kind. The kind born of a system that wants free enterprise, property rights and low taxation. I feel America has lost it’s way and I hope it gets back on track. Unfortunately my own state loves Bernie Sanders so maybe there is no hope.
Cheryl, the OMG moment is like taking the red pill in The Matrix. There’s no turning back, you can’t unring the bell. All you can do is move forward. Churchill once said, “when you’re going through hell, keep going”.
http://youtu.be/zE7PKRjrid4
Yeah I know. I’m not turning back or giving up but I sure would like to fight it better. Sometimes it is just so draining, the waiting and waiting but I’ll be fine. I’ve fought injustice in the past a few times…sometimes winning, sometimes losing but the Government of Canada and the U.S. are the biggest bullies I’ve ever come up against. Thank goodness I’m not alone in this. Thanks Bubblebustin and all.
For all the BS of the last few days, your last comment is the one that’s brought tears to my eyes, Cheryl. Maybe it’s the glass of wine I just had, but I think we could all use a group hug and say “good fight, everyone”. I know it’s not over, but sometimes we just have to congratulate ourselves for what we’ve done together and separately in our efforts to better the situation. Cheers, everyone.
Cheers to you too. Sorry for the tears. In the end I think we’re all pretty tough. We’ll keep fighting. Have a good sleep all. A little rant now and then sometimes helps too.
@Bubbles……I had the first red pill ten years ago. But had a second dose just before the IGA rollout and discovering IBS.
The first red pill was crushing for me because of what I was and the place that I had been.
I suggest for consideration for IBS feature.
This is in regards to the Privacy Commissioner talking about some FATCAed having “tenuous” ties. This sounds like he has some concerns that need to be more fully developed and articulated. He needs to be encouraged.
Also his call for those FATCAed to be notified by the CRA should be of interest.
IMO, the Commissioner thinks/has demonstrated thinking on FATCA not through the lens of the Canadian Charter or Canadian Sovereignty – as if the Charter has no role in his privacy considerations!
