Media and Blog Articles
EmBee suggested that it would be good if there was a thread for new articles, so that people would be aware of where to comment. So, I created this permanent page. You could mention such articles in the comment stream for this page, or if I see one on another thread, I can copy the link to here. I’ll keep adding to the list, but not deleting, so we’ll end up having sort of a “bibliography” of FATCA/CBT articles. [Note: Some articles are not open for comments]
For more articles on FATCA, enter FATCA into Google then click on the link “more news for fatca” just below the most recent featured article.
Note also: JC suggests to see #FATCA on Twitter for latest breaking news. JC finds that is quite a good source and there even are some international articles that one may read using Google Translate.” Others may help certain tweets and articles remain in elevated position by retweeting them.
Be sure to read the comment stream for this thread — there are usually very recent articles mentioned there that aren’t on this list yet.

@ Charl
Thanks for finding that. What do you think? Who had the best response? Who do you believe would actually follow through? My only thought was, “Who the heck is this Rocky De La Fuente? (I thought the third man was O’Malley.) Obviously I’m not following the US election show very closely. At least that spreadsheet (Mrs. W’s?) that I saw awhile back can now eliminate some of the N/As for Clinton and maybe revise some positions for Sanders. I wonder if Bernie Sanders has been reading some of the comments on the petition or possibly chatting with his overseas brother about CBT/FBAR/FATCA.
@EmBee
My thoughts (FWIW=zero)
Neither one of them have it right! Hillary speaks of: “…we should ease burdens on law abiding Americans living abroad.” Does that mean only those that are tax compliant? She also states: “Americans, regardless of where they live, often benefit from American education, infrastructure, legal protections, and trade policies.” So they should be eternal tax slaves? Sounds to me that she does not understand the issue at all. Plus the remainder of her comments are all vague and noncommittal.
Mr. Sanders drank the SCE Kool-Aide and I blame the DA and ARRO for even putting forth that nonsense as a solution. They have caused more harm than good. Between the two I think Mr. Sanders comes out ahead by just by a squeak.
I also have no idea who Rocky is. He must be a lone person at the kids table.
What I find disheartening (well all of it is enraging let alone disheartening), none of this will enter into the election dialogue on either side of the aisle. It is only mentioned during direct questioning and most all seem completely uninformed.
I’m going to put the covers back over my head. The only hope is the Canadian FATCA and CBT lawsuits.
@ Charl
My thoughts would be less than zero but I concur with yours — especially “the only hope”.
@ JakDac
Thanks for posting the responses to the DA’s questions on the Bernie Sanders thread. It makes it easier for anyone who might miss seeing a link.
My stomach did multiple flips while reading that Democrats Abroad document. I’ll say one thing for Hilary Clinton: her smug insincerity comes through loud and clear even in print. Prevaricating, question-dodging BS. She at least confirmed that she is the devil incarnate as far as Americans abroad are concerned.
At least BS (Bernie Sanders), or more likely, one of his minions, was clear and relatively more straightforward in his response. He comes across as thoughtful…and after thinking about it, implies a big middle finger to expats. We’ll give you SCE, then go after all of you hedge fund manager tax cheating expats who all moved abroad to dodge taxes.
Excuse me while I go to the bathroom to throw up.
P.S. Rand Paul dropped out today, our best hope. Seems now that Rubio comes closest to speaking the right words about FATCA and CBT. Though if he’s elected, I fully expect all such promises to fall by the wayside.
A look into the future that in some cases is ramping up now: CRS / FATCA-compliant trusts, whatever all of this means:
http://www.internationallawoffice.com/Newsletters/Offshore-Services/USA/Kozusko-Harris-Duncan/Common-Reporting-Standard-considerations-for-FATCA-compliant-trusts#standard
@Barbara: yep. Clinton spouts the usual garbage like “Any reforms would also need to be scrutinized to avoid weakening government capacity for monitoring illegal activity or tax avoidance facilitated by holding foreign bank accounts” and “Americans, regardless of where they live, often benefit from American education, infrastructure, legal protections, and trade policies.” (So do Americans plan to pay back some of the benefits they get from Indian educated H-1Bs working in the US and paying into SS but leaving before the get their 40 quarters by signing a Totalisation Agreement with India?)
Sanders may sound slightly more sane, but I agree with you: all promises to Americans abroad are going to fall by the wayside, while the big Homeland issue that both Democratic candidates clearly support — extending payroll taxes to investment income — has quite a decent chance of happening if one of them gets elected. And that will result in massive double taxation on Americans abroad, in particular if the “Internal” Revenue Code keeps its current insane definition of investment income which includes appreciation inside mutual funds held inside government-mandated retirement plans.
Rocky De La Fuente sounds like a great guy but he has about as much chance of getting elected as I do.
@Eric,
I live in the US and I have never heard of Rocky De La Fuente.

Congratulations to Professor Allison Christians. Yes, for sure, bubblebustin — so well-deserved!
Global Tax 50 2015: Allison Christians
Canada sees an increase of voluntary disclosures:
…”The CRA attributes the ongoing increase in the number of voluntary disclosures to several factors, including the heightened efforts of the CRA to share data with foreign tax administrators, the agency’s enhanced audit activities, and the use of advanced risk profiling algorithms.
The CRA also expressly referenced its new Offshore Tax Informant Program (the “OTIP”). The OTIP offers financial awards to individuals who provide information relating to certain types of major international tax non-compliance. The CRA indicated that, over the past year, it received 1,920 separate contacts from potential informants under the OTIP, which led to over 200 written submissions and 110 cases that are currently being reviewed.”…

Unfortunately Ms. Christians is lumped in with some bad company- Mythster Stack for example.
Here’s the direct link to Allison Christian’s profile. Fighting against the unfairness of CBT doesn’t even seem to be the main thing that she does!

Record Number of U.S. Citizens, Green-Card Holders Cut Ties With U.S. in 2015
By LAURA SAUNDERS
Updated Feb. 5, 2016 8:06 p.m. ET
http://www.wsj.com/articles/record-number-of-u-s-citizens-green-card-holders-cut-ties-with-u-s-in-2015-1454698808#livefyre-comment
From the Laura Saunders article:
“In the fiscal year ended Sept. 30, 2015, nearly 730,000 people became U.S. citizens, according to a spokesman for the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services division of the Department of Homeland Security.”
I don’t recall previous versions of the quarterly Saunders articles containing anything along these lines. The inclusion of that quote seems pretty mean spirited. I wonder whether that was Saunders’ choice or the government’s. There’s no government official expressing concern for the plight of individuals who feel they have no choice but to give up their US citizenship, instead, it’s the middle finger to the renunciants because there’s still more people living in the US that want to become citizens than living outside the US and giving it up.
The Laura Saunders article starts out very very badly for expats. It absolutely criminalises every expat. Later, a very weak attempt to explain the situation is made- but the damage is already done. Already in the title is the remark “with undeclared offshore accounts”. This already makes expats look like residents with accounts offshore. The following first paragraphs are hair-raising journalism. I tried to get on there to comment on the injustice of the article but somehow I could not sign in with my email address-old or new. Somebody DO SOMETHING! The WSJ is widely read.
I thought Saunders had evolved beyond all of that.
