Media and Blog Articles
EmBee suggested that it would be good if there was a thread for new articles, so that people would be aware of where to comment. So, I created this permanent page. You could mention such articles in the comment stream for this page, or if I see one on another thread, I can copy the link to here. I’ll keep adding to the list, but not deleting, so we’ll end up having sort of a “bibliography” of FATCA/CBT articles. [Note: Some articles are not open for comments]
For more articles on FATCA, enter FATCA into Google then click on the link “more news for fatca” just below the most recent featured article.
Note also: JC suggests to see #FATCA on Twitter for latest breaking news. JC finds that is quite a good source and there even are some international articles that one may read using Google Translate.” Others may help certain tweets and articles remain in elevated position by retweeting them.
Be sure to read the comment stream for this thread — there are usually very recent articles mentioned there that aren’t on this list yet.

Knashing my teeth at reading this inaccurate and ill-informed claim;
“.And by the way FATCA has nothing at all to do with citizenship-based taxation.”
https://www.quora.com/What-are-the-chances-that-the-FATCA-would-be-repealed-and-even-the-citizenship-based-taxation-will-be-abolished
Wha?
It is obvious and irrefutable that FATCA is designed to help enforce extraterritorial US taxation – which include taxation based on US citizenship via birthplace, via transmission by parentage, (as well as by naturalization, and other quasi-citizenship deemed status such as permanent residency – greencards) – even in the absence of any actual economic connection hence the IRS obsession with birthplace as a FATCA indicia rather than just actual residency ( like the rest of the world – except Eritrea).

“What is a U.S. person?
According to U.S. tax law, you may be considered a U.S. person if you are:
A citizen of the U.S. (including an individual born in the U.S. but resident in Canada or another country, who has not renounced U.S. citizenship);”…………..

Allison Christians’ is working on a paper arguing that citizenship based taxation is against international law. (She reveals this while discussing another paper that offers support for her position):
“[Fleming, Peroni and Shay] begin their paper by picking up Reuven Avi-Yonah’s premise that taxation on the basis of residence and source is customary international law. That is not only a relatively unusual argument to find in a US-authorized tax paper, but it is a potentially controversial perspective, which I am exploring in a paper of my own (making the international law case against citizenship based taxation). So, thank you Fleming, Peroni and Shay, for the additional citation support for my arguments.”

YESSSSS. I just wish Allison had more clout.

@notthattara
Goodness! That really makes sense as far as I could understand it. So raising taxes on the ultra rich would not cover lowering taxes on the many many more who make less, but bring in that tax revenue.
Not happy to see that “head of household” deduction is in danger, since that is very useful for an overseas filer who is married to a non-U.S. citizen. Point would be moot if CBT goes, of course. http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2016/11/27/analysis-for-some-in-middle-class-trump-plan-would-mean-tax-increase.html
@Publius
Batchelder: “Taxes have to make sense to the people who pay them”.
Amen to that.
Hey all, this is fun, maybe a new way to get a CLN 😉
Donald Trump Suggests Revoking Citizenship For Flag Burners
subtitle by HuffPo: “This could set a terrifying precedent” — to which we might add “… or a great one.”
Nobody should be allowed to burn the American flag – if they do, there must be consequences – perhaps loss of citizenship or year in jail!
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) November 29, 2016
Sorry, I still don’t know how to use the quote thing.
@Fred…..as I wrote on another thread, that would be welcomed by expats worldwide.
Do you know how much money could be made selling medium size clean burning eco-friendly US Flags?
We could set up a small business which would include a souvenier photo that clearly shows a US Flag burning not a French Flag. A witnessed affadavit and we could take out a once a month advert in a paper that lists people by name!!
Wait……we could then issue a CFB…..Certificate of Flag Burning.
We could have franchises near local banks in Europe. Maybe set up a deal with a bank manager where they could send us their US Persons and we would help them burn a flag on the sidewalk in front of the bank.
Sample bank branch conversation;
Manager; So you want to open an account today, where were you born?
Customer; New York City
Manager; Sorry to hear that, I can not open an account for you right now. But if you like, my friend Fred standing right outside will sell you a US Flag w/match that if you burn it I can an open an account for you as a non-US Citizen. His friend George will take your picture and they will give you a CFB to document your flag burning and loss of citizenship.
@Fred. I think the Narcissist-Elect has forgotten about the First Amendment. It’s the one right beside the Second Amendment that he hasn’t forgotten about!
Cheers,
BC Doc
George : I’m in!
BC doc : lmao! Which is why I’m not really expecting the Donald to do anything for us. But who knows? These days anything is possible.
Here’s Keith Redmond’s November 28th interview on IRS Medic:
LOL … CBT is the poop cake and FATCA is the poop frosting served up for every expat. — IRS Medic host, Anthony.
BIG.

the interview with Keith was quite fantastic.
I won’t comment on this article because I’d have to use some very naughty words to express my feelings about the HMRC paying an American contractor millions of pounds to be 90% wrong in accusing innocent taxpayers of claiming credits not due to them.

Innit. 🙂
