Media and Blog Articles
EmBee suggested that it would be good if there was a thread for new articles, so that people would be aware of where to comment. So, I created this permanent page. You could mention such articles in the comment stream for this page, or if I see one on another thread, I can copy the link to here. I’ll keep adding to the list, but not deleting, so we’ll end up having sort of a “bibliography” of FATCA/CBT articles. [Note: Some articles are not open for comments]
For more articles on FATCA, enter FATCA into Google then click on the link “more news for fatca” just below the most recent featured article.
Note also: JC suggests to see #FATCA on Twitter for latest breaking news. JC finds that is quite a good source and there even are some international articles that one may read using Google Translate.” Others may help certain tweets and articles remain in elevated position by retweeting them.
Be sure to read the comment stream for this thread — there are usually very recent articles mentioned there that aren’t on this list yet.

@Barbara
As a businessman, I am afraid that Trump will not give up this source of revenue for the treasury. He wants to get all those traintracks and bridges rebuilt and repaired. FATCA is a great source of income. He will use any money he can get and then some. And if he removes troops from abroad to save money then ….yeah what then?
Yes, but as a businessman, Trump–more so than any politician–may actually respond to the hardship FATCA has caused to American small businesses and business people overseas, harming US exports and trade balance. If only someone can get the message to him.
I find it hard to imagine him saying, “Pity that you’re collateral damage, but that’s how the cookie crumbles,” like a Democrat would.
@Barbara, I agree with your thinking 110%.
I read that people are calling Trump a 3rd Party candidate and not a Republican, which is so true. He is NOT a politician, he is an accidental politician!!
All these articles about Hellery voters wanting to leave the country to the point of crashing the Canadian immigration web page (no need to link to a specific article; they’re all over the web).
I hope they do try and by the millions. Let their eyes be opened to the paper wall of the CBT/FATCA/FBAR the Democrats: Obama, Hellery, Schumer, Reed, & Co. built. Let them see what the real world thinks of Homelander Americans. I intended to sit by grinning and watch them crawl home crying “Help us, Republican House, Senate, and President” with no visa (not welcome), no bank account, and billions in fines they wrought upon themselves.
Karma is a b**ch.
Well they waited till after the election:

I make 1381 expatriates.
@Neill
“Well they waited till after the election” and they left my name off even though my relinquishment was approved on 1 August. There was more than enough time to add my name and it is the law.
My name is on this list – almost a year to the day from renunciation.
Been waiting to see if I would be listed under the surname on my CLN or the (different) surname that’s now on my SSN. It’s the former.
@iota,
You got on on Trump day!
@Neill – yep. Ironic, isn’t it.
Admins, please delete my previous comment. I apologize. The math is completely wrong.
@ George
“He is NOT a politician, he is an accidental politician!!”
Best quote of the day … so far. 🙂
@Barbara
“I find it hard to imagine him saying “Pity that you`re collateral damage, but that`s how the cookie crumbles” like a democrat would”
He is a consummate capitalist. Of COURSE he would say that. Of course he couldn’t care less about any collateral damage if it makes him richer. He has been living by that principle for decades.
Our only hope is if he does think that FATCA is bad for international business.
@Unforgiven Too
Been maybe 5 years and I have never been on the list.
@Polly
I was kinda hoping I would be on list, because I kind of see it as a badge of honor, a list of people that stood there ground and refused to be sheep (not to say that anyone who is holding on to USC and hoping for change is any less worthy.) I feel I earned it.
On the other side, not being on the list together with many others, some such as you being way over due, just confirms how corrupt this Obama government really is.
They probably won’t, but I hope this new all Republican government makes them dump this entire backlog as soon as possible. They should for no other reason, than the crooks could wait for another 6-12 months and start a continual raise in the numbers by just using saved up names, then blame it on “all the people fleeing Trump”. Wouldn’t put it past them.
@iota
I’m glad to hear you finally made it on the list! I still find it very strange that I got on it so much earlier, even though your CLN was approved two days before mine.
@Polly
In theory, that list should be straightforward to produce. The fact that people who received CLN approval at the same time don’t necessarily wind up on the same list or, like you, never get on a list at all, makes me think that the lists are heavily edited.
@Westcoaster – I like to think they were searching in vain for my nonexistent 1040s. 🙂
@Westcoaster
I dont think the list is edited. No reason to edit me out. I think they are just not very accurate.
@Unforgiven Too
I guess I have mixed feelings about it. But one way or the other it doesn’t really matter.
@iota
That might well be the case 😉
@Polly
Could be. However, given the long wait times often required to even book a loss of nationality appointment, I suspect they’re under-reporting the numbers. But you’re right: It ultimately doesn’t really matter. I have to submit a 8854, etc., next year and my only concern is that the rules and/or paperwork might change for the worse. That said, I’m trying not to dwell on it in the meantime. Whatever I have to do, I will do.
@Westcaoster
I needed the CLN to function in Europe. Banks ask for it. That was what it was all about. The rest doesn’t really matter. But a relative of mine renounced in Germany in Feb and was on the list in May. So I honestly think it is random. Maybe however they consciously leave some people off the list to keep the numbers down in the press?
Oh man- watching CNN and seeing the protests. Hope this doesn’t lead to some kind of civil war in America. I think now one has to swallow the bitter pill that a pouting child is in the oval office and hope he gets his act together and does the job he was elected for.
The son-in-law seems to be the main minder, and seems to suffer less from impulsivity disorder. He may be able to keep Trump on track.
If only we had a clue where the track is leading, other than Trump News.
Just got a call from Susan DelBene’s office from the US capital. This is in response to the repeat FATCA bill. I explained to here hwo we have to fill in the FBAR and how it’s difficult to even get the balances because they know we are US persons and they don’t want to deal with us. I explained how there is a $10k fine / account /year. I explained how its all duplicated in another form to a different place with another set of $10k fines. I explained how we have to keep record and how mistakes can cost another $10k. I explained about how 3520 can take 20% of a foreign inheritance or 35% of a foreign trust (many pensions) for mistakes. I explained how tax professionals are too scared to touch our returns because of the risk of these forms and so to get our taxes done is $1500 dollars. I explained how the republicans have it in their party platform to fix this.
Lots of “that’s not right” etc. They will look into doing something. Yeh right.
@Polly– I would love to obtain a CLN just for the pure political protest aspect of it but I refuse to pay $3,000 Cnd to exercise my right to expatriation (really just to document my previous DIY relinquishment). It would be “fun” and perhaps create some good PR to start a Go Fund Me campaign to help an expat cover the prohibitive cost of checking out of the US– the expat could be tracked/covered through their journey. In Canada, we don’t need a CLN to bank– not unless you duck and cover and tell a white lie or two when necessary.
