Media and Blog Articles
EmBee suggested that it would be good if there was a thread for new articles, so that people would be aware of where to comment. So, I created this permanent page. You could mention such articles in the comment stream for this page, or if I see one on another thread, I can copy the link to here. I’ll keep adding to the list, but not deleting, so we’ll end up having sort of a “bibliography” too. [Note: Some articles are not open for comments]
For more articles on FATCA, enter FATCA into Google then click on the link “more news for fatca” just below the most recent featured article.
Note also: JC suggests to see #FATCA on Twitter for latest breaking news. JC finds that is quite a good source and there even are some international articles that one may read using Google Translate.” Others may help certain tweets and articles remain in elevated position by retweeting them.
Be sure to read the comment stream for this thread — there are usually very recent articles mentioned there that are not yet on this list.

Tax ‘hammer’ takes toll on Americans abroad

@bubblebustin
Can we have some whistleblowers in America now? Some people who divulge information on secret companies/entities in Delaware and Wyoming?
@Polly
Canada has a whistleblower, or “Informant Leads Program”, but the tax liability has to be greater than CD$100K to collect a reward, and the CRA has to be able to collect it. Any less than $100K you do only for the satisfaction of knowing that you’ve helped everyone pay their “fair share”.
$100K:
If the information provided contributes to the collection of federal tax owing, the award amount will be between 5% and 15%, of the federal tax collected related to the international tax non-compliance (not including interest and penalties). See Payment criteria for more information on how the CRA will determine an informant’s reward percentage.

The next stage in FATCA–preemptive seizures? This newsletter is a lot of scare-mongering to make you buy their “special reports”, yet this article is food for thought. It is not beyond possibility that our local governments might want to defend their economies by confiscating ‘US assets’ before the US government can.

@Charl
My discus account isn’t working anymore. But on the WP article- I am astounded that FATCA isn’t mentioned. Now its the big bad OECD. Its NEVER America which initiated this whole mess. I think this is an article setting up America to say no to the OECD when they demand information.
@Bubblebustin:
Reading between the lines, the Bradley Birkenfeld interview explains why the King of Thailand and other “politically exposed persons” (PEPs) will never be contacted by the IRS, let alone prosecuted, for non-compliance with US tax and FBAR legislation. According to Birkenfeld, the UBS’ US Desk handled accounts of 19,000 US citizens. The deal struck between the US State Department and the Swiss government was to turn over account information on 4,500. No one knows how these 4,500 were selected but Birkenfeld suspects that PEPs were excluded. This suggests that the State Department is protecting certain PEPs and placing relations with other countries above IRS enforcement efforts.
@Polly
Yes, the WT article starts out with: “Are you aware that the American government has been slowly giving away its power to international bureaucrats to determine how its businesses and citizens are taxed?”
That’s certainly a new angle. The poor American government, doesn’t it just break your heart?
It’s not a new angle at all — it plays into the exceptionality that the US is the saviour of the rest of the world and *why, do they hate us*. Why should they own responsibility?
@Innocente
The 4,500 names handed over were most likely US residents, with the King of Thailand not being one of them.

Charl, re: “The FATCA Window”, at first glance I saw “The FATCA Widow”…would actually be a good title for an article.
@Polly @Charl
Well the whole OECD deal collapsed the last time the now third largest secrecy jurisdiction refused to cooperate:

The poor underfunded IRS is subjected to 1,000,000 hack attempts per week and Canada and Australia has entrusted the private bank records of its citizens to them.
This is not right

Good one. Expands on the earlier articles with Nigel’s Green’s slamming of FATCA by adding on Keith Redmond’s statements from the last One News Now article. This is worth sharing:

Is It Time To Renounce U.S. Citizenship While You Still Can?

I’m disappointed. Zero Hedge is blurring the lines between Americans fleeing the US because of the burden of supporting domestic social services and long term expatriates renouncing in order to survive.
@Bubblebustin: Unfortunately, it serves both Republicans and Democrats to play up the idea that renunciant=wealthy person.

When I heard the response by the W&M spokesperson I wanted to jump into my computer and beat her with a purse full of bricks. Lucky she wasn’t in front of me! Really, I could have had a life well lived without understanding hatred, but here I am, a senior citizen, so utterly frustrated, terrified and enraged I’m left with an uncontrollabe desire to just bloody the perps of this friggin’ mess. (I use to be a very sweet old lady… the “exceptional” ones have actually rendered me insane.)
Charl, great find. It’s hard to listen to without getting really angry for sure. I wish our new PM had an opportunity to listen to it.
On 2nd thought, that would not be a good clip for Justin Trudeau at all. It comes from too much of an American centric viewpoint. JT might have sympathy, but it would be for those ‘unfortunate Americans’, not for the ‘A Canadian is a Canadian is a Canadian’ types – it is critical we consistently portray ourselves as the latter when appealing to our new Liberal government.
There has to be many in the US from India and many in India as USP or Greencard holders. There has not been much press there about the injustices, just FATCA all good for chasing “black” money. This one is a bit different.

“We want your feedback on this year’s federal election campaign, and the issues you want the NDP to champion over the next four years.”
There is a list of issues for you to rate the importance of. FATCA is NOT one of them. There is a place to input other issues you wish the NDP to fight for.
