Media and Blog Articles
EmBee suggested that it would be good if there was a thread for new articles, so that people would be aware of where to comment. So, I created this permanent page. You could mention such articles in the comment stream for this page, or if I see one on another thread, I can copy the link to here. I’ll keep adding to the list, but not deleting, so we’ll end up having sort of a “bibliography” too. [Note: Some articles are not open for comments]
For more articles on FATCA, enter FATCA into Google then click on the link “more news for fatca” just below the most recent featured article.
Note also: JC suggests to see #FATCA on Twitter for latest breaking news. JC finds that is quite a good source and there even are some international articles that one may read using Google Translate.” Others may help certain tweets and articles remain in elevated position by retweeting them.
Be sure to read the comment stream for this thread — there are usually very recent articles mentioned there that are not yet on this list.

Thanks for spotting that CBC article. I l posted a FATCA Finger of Fate comment.
Hooray for John Irving finally deciding that Canada was his better home. Is there anyone who could contact him further RE FATCA? Since he has just given up his US home, he may not be familiar with this IRS “gift that keeps giving”. Does he have a website where this could be posted?
Appears Treasury plans to address assertion of ‘tax treaty override” represented by FATCA is to insert modifications into any new tax treaties.
Robert Stack, US Treasury Deputy Assistant Secretary (International Tax Affairs) said during the Senate Foreign Affairs Committee hearing:
During his testimony to the hearing, Stack confirmed it is “over five years since the full Senate last gave its consent to a tax treaty.” He pointed out that “the proposed [US-Swiss DTA] protocol replaces the existing treaty’s information exchange provisions with updated rules that are consistent with current international standards. It will allow the tax authorities of each country to exchange information that would otherwise be protected by the bank secrecy laws of either country.” – See more at: http://www.tax-news.com/news/US_Administration_Pushes_For_Swiss_DTA_Update_Ratification____69571.html#sthash.gTKZFOF8.dpuf
@ LM
He has a facebook page.
https://www.facebook.com/JohnIrvingAuthor/
And he is on a book tour with some dates in Canada.

Would love to have him come aboard the Anti-FATCA Bus but I don’t know how politically outspoken he wants to become as a new PR of Canada.
Calgary,
Regarding that CRA scam in Calgary you mentioned, when I checked my home voice mail last night a message was waiting for me saying that I am in trouble with the CRA, a warrant had been issued for my arrest, and that I was to call a 1-844- number.
Do I need the help of a tax compliance lawyer?
Stephen, do you need a phone number? One can never be too sure / too safe. How do I know?
@JC,
Mmm. They have time to try and update tax treaties for information sharing. How about they address some of the problematic accounts and taxation. Then again they just want the money not simplicity for the people paying the money.
@ LM
HIGH FIVE to you … your comment is at the top of the “newest” and will stay there because comments are now closed. I hope John Irving sees it. (Mine’s second so that’s kind of like tag-teaming against FATCA, right?)
LM andEmbee
I’m guessing with his success he’s got some high powered accountants and lawyers to worry about taxes for him. On the other hand, he writes about misfits in society all the time. That would be us, right? People wanting to shed a once coveted US identity like a dead snakeskin, but who find we’re dragging it along behind us as we try to make some headway.
@ EmBee – RE “Would love to have him come aboard the Anti-FATCA Bus but I don’t know how politically outspoken he wants to become as a new PR of Canada”
No reason for him to become politically outspoken. Remember he is a fine novelist so has no trouble devising character names; he can invent a handle for himself here and can donate anonomously to ADCS & no one will “out” him. My concern is that he be made aware of FATCA; having had his prior residence in the US he likely has no clue….. Thanks for the links; I will check out his book-talk dates.
Canadian stops on John Irving Book Tour are only Ottawa, Vancouver, Calgary and Toronto – – anyone want to try to connect with this newbie US Expat?????? http://john-irving.com/avenue-of-mysteries-book-tour/
@Lake Superior Guy,
But the thing is, John Irving has up until now lived INSIDE the US, thus would never have heard of FATCA or FBAR or PFIC. Yes, he may have good accountants to file his forms, but not all accountants working inside the US are totally aware of forms for folks living “abroad”. If he is going to live here, he is not going to long hold his financial accounts at a US bank (with no US address, this will soon become an issue). Once he gets his accounts set up here in “foreign financial institutions”, will he know about FATCA? Unlikely anyone at the bank or investment house will actually tell him that all his data (and anyone he has a joint account with) is going to be swept up and packaged off to the IRS every year like an errant child that needs close monitoring. He’s a thoughtful and sensitive man and is not going to like this but better he be informed!
John Irving is not going to endanger the sales of his books by making himself unpopular with the homelanders. He will not become political.
Polly is correct. The USA has a long tradition of book-burning. The last thing a best-selling author is going to want to do is create an entirely-avoidable backlash of “patriotic” insanity. As a wise man once advised me: “Never kick an angry dog if you can help it.”
Leave the guy alone.
As others, this author should be informed (if he wasn’t any other way). After that, he can make his own decisions how he will live with his new consequences, living outside the land of his birth. He will likely have read the LM and EmBee comments at the CBC article and, if he doesn’t know, he will be curious enough to find out more.
If he doesn’t know, his Canadian bank will tell him.
Right, bubblebustin.
This new Canadian Minister, though, a government representative, should be engaged by her constituents and others in discussion about her views of Canadians affected by FATCA law in Canada:

AND TPP: http://pm.gc.ca/eng/minister/honourable-chrystia-freeland (as FATCA seems to fit into the TPP concepts). She, too, is an author, Plutocrats: The Rise of the New Global Super-Rich and the Fall of Everyone Else (2012). What are Liberal (and her views) of NAFTA, bi-lateral trade agreements within the Americas, the TPP and TPA, CETA and the energy, security and transportation corridors linked to integration with the U.S.?)
Article on 5 ways you’ll be “sacked” by your bank, and it’s only getting worse. #1 re cross-border connections mentions FATCA.

@Polly
Nope… his sales are the bread and butter of his life… Also… he probably had the best accounting and tax info available to him… We never had enough money to worry about it… more worried about keeping food on the table & to pay our bills… When we got comfortable… we still acted like we were piss poor… to this day… I have never paid retail for anything if I can help it… friends call us birds… cheap… cheap… lol
@US
Same goes for Tina Turner. She sells records and her biggest market will still be in America. And she and Irving will certainly have great financial advisors. Yep.
Interesting clip

Submission made by ACA to Congress on Passport Revocation
ACA has written to Congress (November 2015) to strongly oppose the inclusion of the Passport Revocation Provision in current legislation. ACA urges Congress not to act on this provision until it has held hearings and explored alternative ways to solve any perceived tax collection problems. ACA will continue to monitor this issue and advocate on behalf of Americans overseas on this issue. See our letter to members of Congress

Based on his name ‘Aussieexpat’ I think this guy might be in for a shock when he finds out his HSA will probably be taxable in Australia since it’s probable not protected by the tax treaty. RBT won’t fix that now will it?
