Media and Blog Articles
EmBee suggested that it would be good if there was a thread for new articles, so that people would be aware of where to comment. So, I created this permanent page. You could mention such articles in the comment stream for this page, or if I see one on another thread, I can copy the link to here. I’ll keep adding to the list, but not deleting, so we’ll end up having sort of a “bibliography” too. [Note: Some articles are not open for comments]
For more articles on FATCA, enter FATCA into Google then click on the link “more news for fatca” just below the most recent featured article.
Note also: JC suggests to see #FATCA on Twitter for latest breaking news. JC finds that is quite a good source and there even are some international articles that one may read using Google Translate.” Others may help certain tweets and articles remain in elevated position by retweeting them.
Be sure to read the comment stream for this thread — there are usually very recent articles mentioned there that are not yet on this list.

Thanks for the link to Bopp’s interview. I also found this one:

Nothing to do with FATCA or CBT but many of us would agree with Putin that the US has “mush for brains” in a lot of areas:

Hey everyone, Its ‘Global Diaspora Week’ Yeah! ??
John Kerry had a speech about it. I left a comment which no doubt will be filtered out.
https://blogs.state.gov/stories/2015/10/09/celebrating-global-diaspora-week-2015
https://plus.google.com/+StateDept/posts
@JC Well THIS kind of makes me want to actually vomit. How on earth can such hypocritical morons live with themselves? Maybe the DOS needs to know how much their diaspora has NO potential to be an engaged partner, in fact it is quite the contrary. (I am currently spewing potty words at my fridge again).
If your comment gets through I will try too.
@JC World News also has the same article and comments available via Disqus
http://article.wn.com/view/2015/10/09/Celebrating_Global_Diaspora_Week_2015_US_Department_of_State/
Maybe Huffpo will pick it up and we can have a field day with this one!!!!!
JC & Charl: Global Diaspora Week? This makes me sick, too. The US just keeps “celebrating” how they have millions of other countries’ native citizens living in the US (all those storied “huddled masses”, etc.) but they haven’t a kind word for native-born Americans who have become a diaspora of their own. 100% moronic hypocrisy.
They are getting slammed on the DOS FB site: (Go on over and add your two cents. They need to hear from everyone, this is a golden opportunity).
https://www.facebook.com/usdos/posts/10153151060701074?comment_id=10153153005626074¬if_t=like
@Muzzled,
Indeed, they celebrate the diaspora of every country other their own. They seem to see value in the US-based diasporas of other countries, but not in the US diaspora based in other countries. Such short-sightedness would surely bite them in the rear in a just world.
The US-based diasporas of other countries are themselves resentful as I’m sure most of them got got caught up in the great FBAR injustice of undeserved exorbitant fines.
Case in point of a resentful US-based diaspora is Jim707 himself (see Assange thread).
Jordan Cantwell was just elected moderator of the United Church of Canada.
“Cantwell was born in the United States (she holds dual Canadian-American citizenship)…”
http://ucobserver.org/faith/2015/10/prairie_populist/
The United Church is Canada’s largest protestant denomination and is noted for its commitment to social justice issues. Maybe Cantwell could be persuaded to add her voice.
Article is open for comments.
I commented too, JC. Hopefully it will get through. Good opportunity to maybe get heard as there aren’t many comments to compete with there.
Meanwhile I must have sent out dozens of tweets with the WSJ article at #GDW2015. I’ve actually gotten a few positive responses.
This article in Accounting Today states that the IRS is making “significant progress on FATCA”
http://www.accountingtoday.com/news/tax-practice/irs-makes-progress-on-fatca-implementation-76076-1.html
…”TIGTA recommended the IRS update the compliance activities in the FATCA Compliance Roadmap for identifying noncompliance by foreign financial institutions. The IRS should also initiate a periodic quality review process for the processing of paper Forms 8938 to ensure the accuracy of the data being transcribed, according to the report. In addition, the IRS should ensure that the transcription issues identified in this report are addressed in the newest version of the Form 8938 transcription program, TIGTA suggested.
The IRS agreed with the first two recommendations. However, the IRS disagreed with some programming changes related to the third recommendation due to budgetary constraints, limited resources and competing priorities. TIGTA pointed out that the accuracy of the data obtained from Forms 8938 is a critical component for the success of the IRS’s compliance activities with implementing the FATCA, and it believes the IRS should make these programming changes a priority.”…
Is this normal for a program of such magnitude to have these kinds of major impediments to it’s implementation and still be allowed to go ahead?

Anyone traveling to the US lately?
Thanks, Shovel, for this link and your comment on the article. It would be a fine cause for The United Church of Canada to get behind.
Is where anyone here at Brock who could pursue this?
Why would or should our churches not get behind the social / human rights aspects of what is happening with FATCA’s discrimination of *US Persons in Canada?
@Alby
I was going to post the “Stockton Affair” here today too. It is just so appalling. I sure do not intend to travel to America under the circumstances!!! It`s like America has gone insane. They are totally information hungry. They say “Knowledge is power” and they are abusing the concept to the hilt. Nobody is stopping them. Everybody is just handing over the information.I have always said that the NSA has little to do with searching for terrorists and everything to do with industry espionage. I just wonder when the rest of the world will wake up and just say no!
Another chance to beg to have our issue on the roster: (I’m going with the US citizenry should be concerned that they are no longer free to leave. Shouldn’t THAT be an election debate issue?)

Today’s G&M has an interesting front page article about another privacy busting financial snooping law buried deeply in Bill C-31
http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/national/canadas-senior-public-officials-targeted-by-little-known-corruption-law/article26818093/
Canadian financial institutions are now required to keep close tabs on ‘Politically Exposed Domestic Persons’ (PEDPs) as well as Foreign Politically Exposed Persons (FPEPs) for 20 years! after they leave office
This Orwellian law and its’ dragnet includes the family members and close associates of PEDPs and FPEPs.
The cost is unknown. The benefits are unknown. The blow to privacy is clear.
Former Supreme Court Justice Louise Arbour ‘s daughter had her account at RBC closed until she answered questions such as ‘where did the money come from?’
Ms. Arbour describes the law as ‘ a useless bureaucratic nightmare’
JUST LIKE FATCA but in Canada this time around. It is to weep.
