Media and Blog Articles
EmBee suggested that it would be good if there was a thread for new articles, so that people would be aware of where to comment. So, I created this permanent page. You could mention such articles in the comment stream for this page, or if I see one on another thread, I can copy the link to here. I’ll keep adding to the list, but not deleting, so we’ll end up having sort of a “bibliography” too. [Note: Some articles are not open for comments]
For more articles on FATCA, enter FATCA into Google then click on the link “more news for fatca” just below the most recent featured article.
Note also: JC suggests to see #FATCA on Twitter for latest breaking news. JC finds that is quite a good source and there even are some international articles that one may read using Google Translate.” Others may help certain tweets and articles remain in elevated position by retweeting them.
Be sure to read the comment stream for this thread — there are usually very recent articles mentioned there that are not yet on this list.

I know I’m not impressed, Blaze, because any effort to make CBT work is a wasted effort.

Comments still being made there. Need some IBS comments in there. This is only The Wall Street Journal. And need reference to Isaac Brock Society. They don’t like my sign in, you will need to pick a real sounding name.

@ACAVoice – Loyalty doesn’t equate with #taxes. In fact the very founding fathers of the United States were tax evaders themselves. #FATCA

They are apparently having problems getting proof of FATCA-related service denials. Elsewhere they report that the denial letters they have received cite only US rules generically, and not specifically FATCA. To which I say, of course idiots, as we have been telling you, the problem goes way beyond just FATCA. In Japan, here is a typical denial clause from a discount broker:
http://search.sbisec.co.jp/v2/popwin/info/home/pop6040_kokuseki_02.html
They disallow sales of US stocks, bonds, mutual funds, ETFs, etc. — even those that trade on the Tokyo Stock Exchange — to US citizens and green card holders. The reasons? Qualified Intermediary (QI) rules, and the Securities Act of 1933. No mention of FATCA. The only things they let US persons buy are Japanese stocks and bonds, and mutual funds and ETFs (which are of course PFICs).
Remember, the QI rules were put in place specifically to make it hard for US taxpayers to get access to US-based investments via foreign brokers. And they have succeeded at that. And this has nothing to do with FATCA, in fact pre-dates FATCA; FATCA was actually supposed to be the new, improved version of QI. And it has not gone away even after FATCA has come into force.
So DA, and RO, quit screwing around with the FATCA focus! Show us your game plans for attacking CBT, which is the only way to cut through the rat’s nest of such “FU” rules that have been enacted to make life difficult for US Persons abroad.
@foo
Agreed. No point in treating the symptoms of the disease, when the disease is already taking the patient. We know what the cure is. It’s RBT.
Will The IRS Tax Return Data Breach Impact You
FATCA requires all foreign banks in the world to collect sensitive data on USP’s.
“…Question everyone’s need for any personal information. This is especially true for your SSN, date of birth, bank account numbers, passwords, credit card numbers, etc…”

Updates to the IRS’ FATCA IDES Technical FAQs
“E16. I read in a recent cybersecurity blog that there is a concern the encryption standards being used for FATCA data are no longer current. Is this correct?
No. The encryption process used to protect your FATCA data was assessed by the IRS prior to granting FATCA-related information technology systems the authority to operate. The IRS also assessed a number of security controls which are documented in NIST Special Publication 800-53 Revision 4. The IRS would not have approved IDES for use in transmitting tax information otherwise.”

“The IRS would not have approved IDES for use in transmitting tax information otherwise.” Who knew the IRS is capable of irony? Would you take the concerns of a bunch of cybersecurity bloggers over the assurances of the IRS, considering their recent track record? HELL YEAH!

Good to see you here, @Tax Connections. I hope every effort will be made to get our issues out in from of the presidential candidates. Will you be making this a priority?
FYI, the link I provided on June 3rd is in fact the correct one, as I noticed that the first one you provided didn’t work 😉

@ Tax Connections
That’s a great idea to hold the presidential candidates’ feet to the tax fire. Please, please, throw FATCA and CBT into the mix when the summit convenes.
Thank you @EmBee! Wait until you see the lineup of Tax Topics! We are still forming our panel of experts, but believe we have covered all things FATCA and you will be pleased.
@TaxConnections,
What about CBT?
@foo
Yes! We just received a commitment from John Richardson of Toronto to be one of the presenters!
Get your ticket to the 2015 Internet Tax Summit. The link will be available next week to sign up for this event. Save the dates: September 21 through 25, 2015. Recordings will be available.
I’ll post the Link as soon as it is finalized… 😉
Welcome, Tax Connections.
How does this differ from your FATCA Tracker Community at TaxConnections?
Who besides the US tax lawyer and US tax accountant community at TaxConnections are you inviting as your panel of experts?
Thanks.
@Calgary411
Thank you for the warm welcome! We are still assembling our International Panel of Tax Experts and will announce them when finalized. The Internet Tax Summit will be a week long event with our panel experts providing presentations on various tax topics. We are wiring up the Tax Communities to handle the discussions on FATCA and CBT. Stay tuned…
@TaxConnections,
Good to hear!
Thanks!
@TaxConnections,
Very glad to hear that John Richardson will be one of your presenters.
Unsolicited suggestions:
Over and above the usual discussions re *corporations abroad*, could be a panel discussion regarding issues / real solutions for ordinary individuals and families who have chosen to live, work, raise families, pay taxes, plan for retirement in other countries. Some, of course, plan to return to the US to live at some point so are real *American Citizens Abroad*, but a special focus would be welcome to the many who have no plans to ever return to the US and are a whole different example of the collateral damage of FATCA. Another subject that needs real discussion is how FATCA is destroying the sovereignty of countries outside the US, as governments are *forced into* signing IGAs to save their own financial institutions, which in our own countries are NOT *foreign*.
