Media and Blog Articles
EmBee suggested that it would be good if there was a thread for new articles, so that people would be aware of where to comment. So, I created this permanent page. You could mention such articles in the comment stream for this page, or if I see one on another thread, I can copy the link to here. I’ll keep adding to the list, but not deleting, so we’ll end up having sort of a “bibliography” too. [Note: Some articles are not open for comments]
For more articles on FATCA, enter FATCA into Google then click on the link “more news for fatca” just below the most recent featured article.
Note also: JC suggests to see #FATCA on Twitter for latest breaking news. JC finds that is quite a good source and there even are some international articles that one may read using Google Translate.” Others may help certain tweets and articles remain in elevated position by retweeting them.
Be sure to read the comment stream for this thread — there are usually very recent articles mentioned there that are not yet on this list.

@Tricia Moon
Do you know why that article at the FP is dated Sept 14 (albeit updated Sept 16) when the decision was only rendered on Sept 16?
@The Mom
Yes the FB commenting at FP is very annoying. I have two FB accounts. I tried commenting using one of them and the comment showed up listing my affiliation with my employer. Since I’m not authorized to speak for my employer in this matter, I had to delete that comment. I tried commenting using the other FB account. Despite the fact that my current city is part of my FB profile, it is showing my old high school as my affiliation. That school hasn’t even existed for over 10 years! At least it’s in Canada though 🙂
@Dash, I’ve noticed NP articles, and also G&M articles, are often updated articles that were previously published. I attribute it to an unwillingness to write a separate article. G&M’s are often unreadable and disjointed because of the updates.
WSJ: Is The IRS Undercounting Americans Renouncing U.S. Citizenship?
Thursday, September 17, 2015, Paul Caron
http://taxprof.typepad.com/taxprof_blog/2015/09/wsj-is-the-irs-undercounting-americans-renouncing-us-citizenship.html
I have one in moderation there.
Latest from Robert Wood:
http://www.forbes.com/sites/robertwood/2015/09/18/second-422-hike-in-fee-to-exit-u-s-in-12-months/
A little factually inaccurate — he states that relinquishment cost has been raised from $450 to $2350 rather than from $0 to $2350.
Wait until the fee hits $5,000 or even $10,000.
There has been a discussion going on on the CBC News Network (TV) regarding a comment that Stephen Harper made in the debate last evening. He referred to “old stock Canadians”. The pundits were discussing what this strange term could possibly mean.
Well, we know *exactly* what it means because we aren’t! Many of us here are either immigrants or children of immigrants. As immigrants from one particular nation we have been singled out for discriminatory treatment by Canadian financial institutions, which treatment, *for now*, has been upheld as perfectly acceptable according to a Federal Court judge!
The “Swat Team” might want to watch out for articles mentioning these “old-stock Canadians” of Mr. Harper’s.
“Old Stock Canadians?” I’m a canundrum for them…born in USA to Canadian parents with Father’s of Confederation on both sides of my family background. What to do with me???? Still second class???? Go figure!!
Twitterers were merciless lastnight regarding the “old stock” statement.
Patricia Moon @nobledreamer16 16h16 hours ago
pure laine=de souche (roughly in English, old stock)??? creepy probably means white wasps
It is considered to be clearly racist in the sense that anyone who isn’t “old stock” is “impure”
Commonly used in Quebec and used to be, in the US.
You’re right Trisha, it’s plain and simple racism but that’s been clear for Harper for a long time.
Cheryl, you’re like me – new old stock.
@Dash
I am sorry, I am just seeing your comment above now.
I honestly have no idea about the dates – possibly they had a draft and just updated?
Yeah, well I’m pretty damned old stock, right back to Algonquin Marie and her French husband in the 1600s.
My ancestors were here long before the US and the IRS, or Canada.
My mother’s family goes way back too, The Mom, but my father wasn’t Canadian and I was born in the US so my stock is diluted into a weak broth maybe good enough to make some Mr Noodles.
@bubblebustin @the mom
It just shows you how stupid all this really is.
I never thought about natives in the “old stock” reference I guess you are even a better class citizen “Extea Old Stock”. What would Mr. Harper have to say about that?
Yeah, extra old stock, but still a “former American, resident in Canada” eh?
It’s so lovely that a 20 minute drive across the border to a US hospital wipes out centuries of family history on the CANADIAN side of the border. The US is THAT exceptional.
@Bubblebustin, my mom was born in England, near the end of WWII, to a Welsh woman and Canadian soldier. The Canadian government took action sometime back to ensure war brides and their offspring that came to Canada were Canadian citizens. It’s interesting that my mother came to Canada, born abroad, at pretty much the same age I did, born abroad (both in infancy).
She was never considered British first, if at all. Why should I then be considered American?
I forgot to add, my mother, born in England, was the first in our family to obtain Metis status. Go figure.
http://www.joeydevilla.com/2015/09/18/a-chart-that-will-help-you-understand-stephen-harpers-old-stock-canadians-phrase/
Just add to the chart *US Persons*…
@The Mom
“She was never considered British first, if at all. Why should I then be considered American?”
Because Congress has spoken.
Interestingly, I have Metis in my background too, but then I think most French Canadians might too.
Speaking of Old Stock, I’m leaving work now and going home to drink at least three fingers of the stuff.
I was born in the US in 1945, before there was a separate Canadian citizenship, my mother could not transmit Canadian citizenship to me, but I would have been born dual per today’s laws. for what it is worth my first French ancestor came ashore at Tadoussac in 1618, another ancestor was part of the Port Royale census of 1612. Also native ancestry traced back to Manitouabeouich from the first inter-racial marriage in Quebec. What would Harper make of an immigrant, old stock. ancient stock Canadian
