Media and Blog Articles
EmBee suggested that it would be good if there was a thread for new articles, so that people would be aware of where to comment. So, I created this permanent page. I’ll make a permanent list of links posted here and keep adding to it, but not deleting, so we’ll end up having sort of a “bibliography” of FATCA/CBT articles. [Note: Some articles are not open for comments]
For more articles on FATCA, enter FATCA into Google then click on the link “more news for fatca” just below the most recent featured article.
Notes:
From JC: To see #FATCA on Twitter for latest breaking news. JC finds that is quite a good source and there even are some international articles that one may read using Google Translate. Others may help certain tweets and articles remain in elevated position by retweeting them.
From Badger: On an important archival note, please use the Internet Archive Wayback machine https://archive.org/web/ (see bottom right ‘Save Page Now’ box to enter URLs of webpages you want saved for posterity, and try to save backup copies of articles and other items of interest in some other form – such as a datastick or external drive. Some important and very significant webpages and the fulltexts of articles are no longer available (although some can be retrieved if someone using the Wayback machine saved them).
Be sure to read the comment stream for this thread — there are often very recent articles mentioned since this list was updated.

Please send a message to this young Accidental American to assure him that he doesn’t need to enter the US tax system to renounce: https://www.gofundme.com/f/save-me-from-the-usa-irs
If he has an SSN, there’s a more effective way to raise funds for renunciation. It’s called the stimulus benefit. Currently at $1200, with a good possibility it may increase to cover the full cost.
There’s one very hateful pro-FATCA troll called Marie Moret who is flooding #fatca twitter with such vitriol I do not want to soil Brock with repeating it here. This is sad and scary and we don’t need more sad and scary at this time. There’s no reasoning with these types I’m afraid. If you’ve absorbed more fear than you can handle lately, please don’t look. You need to hang onto whatever joy remains in your life.
Does anyone have the link to that non filers stimulus payment claim form?
Found it.
@BirdPerson
Message to the Dutch person got through. Another innocent victim saved. Good catch.
All in a day’s work for Super Non-Compliance Man!
On the other hand, it took a certain RH less than a week to get kicked off the USExpatTaxes sub-reddit for advising that accidentals stay away from US tax filing. They are very patriotic on that forum.
@ RH
Upon entering a lion’s den, be aware that you may not come out unscathed . Also, not worth any effort . Always the same outcome ,as dealing with a fanatic of any stripe.
Thanks, EmBee. I weighed in. MarieMoret9 is a YUGE Trump supporter but supports FATCA. Guess she didn’t get the memo that it’s an Obama law (as she missed the memo for a lot of things, like birthright citizenship and CBT).
@RR
Completely don’t understand what you are saying. Point was that thanks to BirdPerson we found someone before they invested in full-blown tax compliance.
Using the non-filer form to fund renunciation via the stimulus payment is an ongoing experiment that some may be willing to attempt. I don’t think anyone is seriously suggesting that a lifetime of scrupulous US tax compliance is worth $1200.
@RR
Oh, duh, possibly you were referring to reddit. My bad.
@RH
Sorry that I didn’t reference my response clearly.
One axe that is worth grinding is all this cbt grief originated not with the folks in the USC but with the homelanders abroad and their lobbying efforts through all those years to eliminate any way to lose that citzenship , namely, the various retention requirements . Tney created the noose around the albatross’ neck.
Sorry ,it’ the albatross around the neck. Just as bad.
I’m glad to see a public posting on the Dutch AA’s ‘fund me’ page. I had sent him a private message, but it’s good to have something publicly available!
More madcap stimulus-check hijinks!
https://www.politico.com/news/2020/05/01/irs-mistakenly-sends-stimulus-checks-to-foreign-workers-228974
Hilarious! I must the only one in the whole world who hasn’t gotten one of those cheques. I haven’t totally given up hope, though, and if one eventually does turn up in my mail box or bank account, I certainly won’t be worrying about whether or not I should send the money back.
The comments are funny, too. The anti-Trump folks figure the screw-up is all his fault. The pro-Trumpers pin it on the “corrupt Obama IRS”! Plus they’re all telling each other they should go get UV enemas or disinfectant injections!
Thanks, R.H.
@Maz95: No, you’re not the only one. Hubby and I have not received any cheques, though as good little compliant filers, we qualify. Trouble is, all postal service between the USA and most Asian countries is cut off, other than slow boat, so we might receive them by September. I’ll bet those cheques have an expiry date which is sooner than we receive them. Well, with Trump’s signature on them, maybe they’ll be collector’s items we can sell on eBay in five years to the nostalgic MAGA crowd. In the spirit of Ron Henderson, we can then use the proceeds to host our renunciation party, which should be around that time.

@EmBee
I just tried to get onto the federal Register site to see if there was anyone I knew but it seems to be down at present! I wonder why?
Federal Register first quarter 2020
There is no one shamed by this except the US Government.
https://www.federalregister.gov/documents/2020/05/08/2020-09814/quarterly-publication-of-individuals-who-have-chosen-to-expatriate-as-required-by-section-6039g
Regarding the Federal Register and its unreliable data, is that the number of individuals who renounced in the first quarter (only until mid-March when the consulates all closed) or the number of CLNs issued in the first quarter? I can never remember.
If the latter then it has nothing to do with COVID, since those renunciations would have taken place earlier, many in 2019. And in the former case the timing doesn’t make much sense either given that there is often a waiting list for renunciation appointments. So I’m not sure that the logic in the Newswire issue is terribly sound.
What is clear is that there will be zero renunciations for at least one quarter in 2020, as consulates are not taking appointments. (Or are they? I had a look on the site for Canada and it says nothing about closures or COVID precautions, but it can’t be business as usual.)
@RonH
I know, another uninformed article with no logic re the covid timing behind it, but at least they are exposing the renunciations.
Of course one can never look to logic in government diktats or stats. Consulate agents are always behind bulletproof/virusproof glass so renunciation appointments should never have been shut down. Perhaps they just cleared their backlog of 2019 renunciation acknowledgments while free of the burden of actually serving US citizens.
Consular officials would need to travel to and from the office, obviously, which in some countries is still not possible. Closing the consulates was a perfectly reasonable decision.
I assume from the lack of news that there has been no information yet about reopening or what will happen with cancelled appointments.
Rand Paul is talking about the Bill of Rights in relation to FISA reform. Lets remind him of Bill of Rights infringement by FATCA and of his testimony at the Congressional FATCA Hearing. Please RT/Like on Twitter.
Maybe slip repeal of #FATCA in with your #FISA amendments.
FATCA also violates rights guaranteed in the Bill of Rights, for 9 mil USP overseas. You were a star in the Congressional hearing on FATCA. Remember: FATCA violates constitution on 8 counts?
How about some consistency?

I posted on Twitter FATCA Rally Group just now:
Actually FATCA unconstitutional on 7 counts, FBAR on 1 count, yet there should be more counts as FBAR may act to prevent employment and advancement & partnerships.
Rand Paul is also a whackjob, unfortunately.
