Media and Blog Articles
EmBee suggested that it would be good if there was a thread for new articles, so that people would be aware of where to comment. So, I created this permanent page. I’ll make a permanent list of links posted here and keep adding to it, but not deleting, so we’ll end up having sort of a “bibliography” of FATCA/CBT articles. [Note: Some articles are not open for comments]
For more articles on FATCA, enter FATCA into Google then click on the link “more news for fatca” just below the most recent featured article.
Notes:
From JC: To see #FATCA on Twitter for latest breaking news. JC finds that is quite a good source and there even are some international articles that one may read using Google Translate. Others may help certain tweets and articles remain in elevated position by retweeting them.
From Badger: On an important archival note, please use the Internet Archive Wayback machine https://archive.org/web/ (see bottom right ‘Save Page Now’ box to enter URLs of webpages you want saved for posterity, and try to save backup copies of articles and other items of interest in some other form – such as a datastick or external drive. Some important and very significant webpages and the fulltexts of articles are no longer available (although some can be retrieved if someone using the Wayback machine saved them).
Be sure to read the comment stream for this thread — there are usually very recent articles mentioned

@BirdPerson
My comment did not make it past the censors……..I saw another comment earlier but it seems to be gone
Yes, I saw another comment earlier, also gone now.
Interesting John’s is still up.
I took a shot at The Gleaner too. It’s in moderation.
Any comment that seems to suggest that Jamaicans living in Jamaica with no financial connections to the USA should not file are not making it past moderation. Johns comment seems to be allowed to stay because it’s subtle and because he says people should be filing forms.
The article makes me wonder just what the relationship is between Blair and The Gleaner.
@ Mike
Yep … that’s why mine was never posted I’m sure. It’s almost like The Gleaner gave Blair the mod job for his own article. It’s hard for me to do subtle when I see blatant scare-mongering.
I’ve written to Mr Blair to tell him exactly what I think of him and his article. His email address is at the bottom of the article if anyone fancies doing the same.
And yes, you would almost think Blair was moderating the comments.
Johns comment seems to be about as strong as will be allowed.
@Mike–would you be willing to share what you’ve written? I’d love to read it!
This is what I wrote/didnt make it through:
Interesting you have not heard of a single taxpayer who knows about the Transition Tax and G.I.L.T.I. given there has been considerable opposition to it since early November 2017. The efforts have been productive with regard to delaying payment of the tax. It is another of the U.S. government’s dishonest actions having promised those entering Streamlined that their small CFC’s corporate earnings would not be taxed. What to say of the completely unacceptable 30 years’ retroactivity on income that was never taxable in the first place. Add to that the countries where these corporations exist have first right of taxation via treaty. And the icing on the cake- these people will NOT receive the benefit of moving to a territorial system which is the point of the Transition Tax in the first place. People should know a stand alone bill regarding Territorial Tax for Individuals (TTFI) will be introduced before the end of the year.
Since 2009 expats have been reading endless fear-inducing articles such as this one. There is simply no similarity between Mr. Manafort’s actions and those who have “foreign” accounts where they live. At this point in time, Canada, Denmark, France, Sweden and the Netherlands all have provisions in their treaties with the U.S. that protect those who were their citizens at the time any U.S. tax was incurred. None of those countries will collect from those citizens on behalf of the U.S.. Canada will not collect FBAR penalties. It is misleading to suggest that the IRS’ programs have been successful in bringing large amounts of tax/taxpayers into compliance. That $11 billion largely represents penalties from the OVDP. Discontinuing the (Foreign) Streamlined program will likely have little effect. Expatriations will continue and those who can continue to remain under the radar will do so. What a shame the U.S. didn’t begin this process with some due diligence given the large majority of people were simply unaware of their “obligations.” Many may have been more inclined to try and keep their citizenship if they hadn’t been threatened with immediate financial ruin at the onset.
Interesting–newer and more pointed comments are currently up.
@BirdPerson
Perhaps I will resubmit. I have 2 discus accts and I used the one that came up/ anonymous one bc I can never remember pws. The moniker is not US-friendly….
And now I’m dying of curiosity–in what way is it not US-friendly!
My comment is still pending in Disqus.
Perhaps it was too obvious I was typing it with my middle finger.
@BirdPerson
I don’t want to give it away…but it reeks of “I’m glad I’m not one of you… ;-P
@EmBee
Now you KNOW how much we love it when you use said-finger…!!!
This website really really needs ‘like’ buttons!
@Embee and @Patricia you two made my evening!
@BirdPerson
LOL!
@EmBee
not that it will likely make any difference but I tried same comment again with a different account………….
Well glory be! Comment goes in ok under real name
You need to get a life. How many people do you think read the comments in a Jamaican newspaper and care about them?
Ohhh. I need to get a life as well.
@ Patricia Moon
Gosh mine’s up too now. We finally broke the blog jam. 🙂
Who are you talking to Portland?
I think all of us.
Portland- If our comments save one little old lady from handing her life savings over to a compliance condor and the IRS, it maked me a happy man.
Yup, even if it’s just one. 🙂
@Portland
The effect of your comments on say, one individual on the Renunciation thread are not limited to only that person. Why? Because of the number of hits per day on Brock. It is the same for any other topic or issue. Another more subtle point is that over the years, we have had a presence on that paper when the condors come calling. No reason NOT to respond. Hope that addresses your issue.
When I had my OMG moment six weeks ago, I hired a compliance condor within three days. Due to delays in obtaining the information he needed, I had time to calm down and do some web searches. I came across this site via a comment from another site. And after much reading of various posts (and answers from your good selves) I removed myself from the condor’s clutches.
Keep responding!
